How I Created Timothy, A 7′ Snow Sculpture.

Meet Timothy, a snow sculpture built in Waterloo, Ontario.

    7′ snow sculpture Timothy.

Built January 8, 2017 in Waterloo, Ontario.

Start with a plywood (blue) form.

The blue form was inspired by the French painter Matisse. Sam the Eagle is watching. He is not sure he approves. The red form will eventually become an 8′ Easter Island snow sculpture.

    Pop off the form!

After the packed snow sits in the form for a few hours to bind, it’s time to carve!

    Carving begins.

    Progress.

    Keep carving. It’s -22°C

    Getting there

My -100°C boots are keeping me warm.

    Let’s add some eyeballs.

The iris’ are created on a lathe. I start by turning a piece of birch wood round and then create the iris. I then give them a basic paint job–I’m no artist but they look ok from a distance.

    The mouth.

    Initially no smile.

    Welcome Timothy!

Ok, the 8′ Easter Island snow sculpture can also be seen.

    Shadows appear.

    Too much filter.

    Ridiculous filter.

But it’s sort of cool. Pun intended.

    Timothy tries a new look.

    Smile time!

It only took 10 minutes to add a smile and teeth.

    One more.

Timothy is enjoying his short life. Rain is in the forecast.

    End with a selfie.

The selfie actually adds perspective on the snow sculpture size. By Wednesday the rain and warm weather erased most of the snowbank.

I make 8' tall snow sculptures in my front yard usually with non-packing snow! I live in Waterloo, Ontario. But only after a good snowfall. Later they melt away.
