How A Magpie Saved Our Cat’s Life And Brought Joy To Our Home

I’m Jane from Melbourne, Australia. A single mum with an amazing 7-year-old daughter Izzy. I dabble in nature photography and use Red Bubble for my designs. This is the amazing, inspiring story of our Maggie…

Maggie first came into our lives when we thought we were losing our beloved Cat of 18-years-old, Saskia. Sassy had thyroid cancer and had suddenly stopped being able to eat altogether – even the nearly-liquid critical care food. I noticed Maggie following me around the yard and seemingly wanting to be friends. Friends suggested I throw mince balls to her and it would help tame her. As I started going out each afternoon to throw these mince balls, Sassy would follow and started eating them too! We couldn’t believe it. So Sass started eating mince meat (not cat food, but the sort humans buy to cook with) and we got 3 more months out of our girl. Maggie went away – her job was done.

Then two weeks after Sassy’s passing (over 3 months since last seeing Maggie), Maggie came back, knowing we needed that comfort. My daughter and I were struggling so deeply with the huge loss and felt such a dark cloud over us.

Maggie is such a character, running up to me like a puppy dog, bringing me much needed smiles and giggles and deciding to be our tame backyard pet. When I’m not out playing with her, she sits on the kitchen window sill talking to me and walking up and down it following me around the kitchen as I do chores. My daughter has stopped crying herself to sleep. I feel lighter. Within a week, Maggie started sitting on me, letting me pat her and basically imprinting herself on me and becoming very clingy. She is a little miracle and we are very lucky!

Maggies are great :-) Such a nice story please check in with a vet and get advice on the best to feed her/him. native birds can get defencies that really mess them up from eating too much human food of the wrong sort. as far as i can see this is still quite a young bird, and i know you would want the best nutrition for a growing maggie :)

Glad that you have got Maggie after Sassy. God send her to comfort you. I lost my girl 4 months ago and shortly after that my neighbour's cat started to come around and hang out at my patio. I found that is comforting and now we are friends. Thanks God for the healing for you and me.

What a sweet story! Sorry you lost your kitty. Sounds like she lived a full life being loved by you, and Maggie showed up just in time to help you.

Aw I know how you feel about losing your cat as I've been there too. Breaks my heart every time one of them goes. I'm glad you found something so beautiful to take the pain away. All animals, birds, etc. are a blessing & should be treated as such. They were put here for us to look after, not for us to abuse them. <3

Animals are so sensitive to the needs of others. What a wonderful bird. Cherish her. As someone else suggested, please find out what the natural diet is for Magpies and give that to her so that she doesn't get nutritionally deficient.

Wild birds dont usually imprint on people unless they have done so from day one! This makes me believe the Buddhists may be correct. It seems like a wise old caring soul is inhabiting that birds body!

It's so hard when we lose one of our fur babies. Not everybody understands it. How wonderful your new companion knew just what you needed.
