30 Hotel And Airbnb Experiences That Were The Opposite Of What Was Promised
Interview With ExpertIt’s no secret that hotels and Airbnb hosts have quite a few deceptive tactics under their belt to lure in guests to stay with them. After all, it’s true that in business, the end often justifies the means, no matter how sad that might sound. One of the most common ways people are tricked into booking a stay is by using listing images that promise picture-perfect accommodations that, in reality, fall terribly short.
The Bored Panda team has scoured the web for some of the worst hotel and Airbnb expectation vs. reality instances in hopes that it encourages you to double and even triple check the legitimacy of your booking. To find them, all you have to do is scroll down.
While you're at it, don't forget to check out a conversation with travel blogger Carrie Green-Zinn and travel content creator at Ange On A Plane, Angela Liu, who kindly agreed to share some tips on avoiding disappointment when booking hotel and Airbnb stays.

Looked at the hotel on Google and got excited because they have a decent-looking pool. This is what I saw when we got here
Both travel content creators have had their fair share of bookings that fell terribly short of the listing pictures. Angela Liu from Ange On A Plane says it happens because the posted photos are usually from when the accommodation is new and freshly cleaned.
And after some years have passed, the wear and tear does do a number on these hotel rooms and Airbnbs, making our expectations clash with reality.

And also no possibility to lock te room when you leave. Left the keys on the sink and left for a nice flat in Shoreditch.
Her worst experience was when she stayed in an accommodation that hired a photographer who really knew his editing tools.
"The place was much smaller than in the photos, a lot less bright, and also much dirtier. There were spiderwebs on the inner corners of the windows, and there were a lot of windows in that house! It looked like no one had opened the blinds for years. When we lifted the bedsheets to check for bed bugs, we found lots of little spots of blood all over the mattress. I didn't bring any bug spray and had the worst sleep of my life there, covered in peppermint oil (after a quick Google search on what would deter bed bugs)," she shared.

I wasn’t expecting a Marriott but…dang. When I raised my disappointment to the hotel manager, his response was, “…Is it the carpet?” No, no it is not just the carpet.
The cherry on top are the vinyl blinds with stock-image-quality prints. TWO of them. Even better.
In-Laws Booked Us A Cabin. What We Thought We Were Getting vs. What We Actually Got
It turns out the bed bug issue in booked accommodations is quite common, as travel blogger Carrie Green-Zinn had also reserved apartments in great neighborhoods on two separate occasions and both times, her daughters got horrible bed bug bites. It was so bad they had to leave and ask for reimbursement.
Hotel Room That I Booked vs. Hotel Room That I Got
Totally horrid experience with MakeMyTrip, as the hotel booking was “non-refundable” they won’t be able to do anything. Completely ruined my family vacation. I will advise everyone to check the refund policy before booking.
Not sure whether consumer court is a good option or not. This was a fraud in my opinion but not sure if MMT can get away with this by stating their “policies”

Booked A Room In Kansas On A Cross Country Road Trip, Told My Daughter She Could Swim When We Got To The Hotel
Sadly, I've been to a couple of places like this. The worst was the one that advertised a hot tub, only to find it full of leaves and brown water with bird poop around the edges. They tried to say that must have just happened that day. It was spring. There were no leaves falling.
Unfortunately, those weren't the only times Carrie was disappointed when arriving at hotels or Airbnbs. "Once in London, the apartment was so tiny and the owner's things were everywhere—not what we expected by the photos at all. Once in Provence, the apartment was great but the location felt very unsafe and sketchy," she told us.

Airbnb Expectations vs. Reality. Host Doesn’t Care About Resolving The Issue And Says The Pool Was Just Cleaned
I haven't used AirBnB. Are guests allowed to post reviews and photos?
Carrie's go-to strategy for handling a stay that wasn’t at all as promised in its description and pictures is to immediately contact the manager or owner to try to resolve the issue. "And if that is unsuccessful, to request reimbursement. In the case of the bed bugs, the owner was so mortified that they offered a refund right away!"
Expectation vs. Reality
It's amazing what you can do with constrained photographic perspective and Photoshop.

Meanwhile, Angela says, "It depends if I've booked the stay, but usually I'll message the host first before leaving a review. Thankfully, most of the stays I've had have been incredibly accommodating and clean."

If you reserved an AirBnb because it had rooftop cornhole, maybe you shouldn't expect much.
I’m So Bummed With Our Airbnb They Didn’t Tell Us The Grounds Were Torn Up For Construction. I Complained
The host offered a refund if we cancel but there isn’t anything available that could work for us and we didn’t know until we arrived. The marketing vs. The reality.

And for which the doctor said we needed to get her out or she would develop bronchitis. I have the doctor's note.
To avoid disappointment when booking accommodations, Angela recommends thinking about what locals are used to in that particular area or country. This is something she wasn't used to considering, which got her in quite a few unpleasant situations.
"I stayed in Amsterdam and the photos looked beautiful online, but there was no elevator and we were on the 4th floor. We had 3 large bags/suitcases, but luckily staff helped us with this. On another stay in Bali in the rainforest, I didn't consider that bugs inside the accommodation might be quite normal—I slept in a bed of (small) ants most of the nights and I'm terrified of bugs! I'd definitely remember this when booking in a foreign country."

A buddy of mine is currently in rome and pays 200€ per night for that beauty. The bed is rock solid and the bathroom is a biological research center for mold apparently.

Seeing A Bunch Of Tweets About Airbnb And Thinking About The One I Stayed In A Week Ago And How Awful It Was.. Expectations vs. Reality
Another tip she has is trying to spot if furniture looks too small in the center of photos, which is a telltale sign that the photographer used a wide-angle lens that makes the room look bigger. "When booking boutique hotels and accommodations, the chance of encountering these things is more common, so I try to be cautious when I do consider booking them. Also, reviews from other people are your best friend and don't ignore them!"

What Do You See In The Airbnb Ad "House With Pool In Pelion" vs. What They Take You To When You Arrive At The Property
Frankly, I don't believe this entry. Made all the more suspicious by the only Google reverse image I could find linking straight back to Bored Panda. I call BS on it.
Carrie is also a big believer in the importance of always checking the reviews. "I think it is critical to read reviews! Keep scrolling as you read. Most people with a bad experience will share it in reviews," she says.
"Also, any time you can get recommendations from a trusted source—a friend or private travel Facebook group that you might join—is helpful. There are private Facebook groups for all kinds of travelers and destinations that you can join before a trip to ask for recommendations of places to stay."

Old and wise. If I'm just looking for a good night's sleep, a motel would suit me just fine.
Read the reviews people. If anything is below 4.8 on Airbnb, then read the reviews VERY carefully. When it is just two people, a hotel is often the better choice. When it is a group, a whole house is fun because you can cook, hang out, etc.
Agreed. I use both airbnb and hotels. For both it goes that ypu need to put in a little extra research such as checking the reviews and Google maps. I steer cllear from low ratings ans have always neen fine. The only time I've been disappointed, was on a new airbnb with very few reviews.
Load More Replies...There is a reason I never book AirBnb, you virtually have no recourse and the rates are insane. Give me a 4 or 5 star hotel any day.
"Rates are insane"? Well don't book it then, nobody is forcing you. If that's true then they'll soon go out of business.
Load More Replies...I once stayed at an Airbnb where they expected a thorough clean, charged an additional cleaning fee but had someone else's toenails in the bed. Never again.
I've never stayed in a bad Airbnb - a couple of slightly bizarre ones, a couple of middle of the road and some surprisingly excellent ones. Met some really nice people too. The trick is to read all the reviews carefully and just don't book anywhere with no or very few reviews. I've stayed in some awful hotels the other hand, including getting bed bugs from one.
I did an Air BnB once, and it was okay, nothing terrible. But I never will again once I heard that the billionaire CEO of Air BnB joined DOGE.
People, please stop using Airbnb, the damage it's causing to the housing market in already stressed areas is devastating. In tourist areas rents have double since COVID. Working class people can't afford to live. Grown adults, couples are sharing to cover rent. I could tell you loads of stories. A friend rents a very small 35m2 ground floor for 650. Her contract is up and the owner is asking for 1100. Where I live 2 bed bath 90m2 have gone from 850 to 1500 euros. There is no infrastructure, Airbnb atracts a very low value tourism, noise bozzy house party. Sorry guys if you can't afford a holiday stay at home or go less days. I don't go. Even the local supermarkets are empty in the evenings because they can't stock fast enough. Meanwhile business are closing because they have no staff because they can't afford to live in the area.
As always with these anti-airbnb lists, they're very US specific, where it seems that historically some unscrupulous owners have frankly been taking the píss. Sadly some people can't see beyond the owners and extend the criticism to the whole company, which is absolutely not justified. Oh, and for those people claiming it's over=priced and more expensive than a hotel - didn't you look at the price before booking? If it's really too high then they won't get any bookings, if you were prepared to pay and booked anyway then you have no business complaining abut the price that you had already agreed to.
I am somewhat surprised that more people have not learned the truth about AirBnB. I travel a lot for my work and started trying to stay in AirBnBs when I was staying in one place for several nights or longer. In the beginning, the majority of the places we stayed were fine. Over the past couple of years, the quality has crashed. Worse, the ridiculous rules and demands of so-called "hosts" have become insane. $300 a night and you have to clean the room, do the wash and carry out the trash. Hosts that are hostile and unwelcoming; dirty, even unsafe conditions; fake pictures and even less honest reviews...yeah, you are much better off staying with one of the major chain places. Not that they are perfect, but the good ones are fairly decent and at least you have someone to hear a complaint should something happen. AirBnB doesn't care about the customer at all and rarely willing to help out should an issue arise.
How do they get away with this? Wouldn't this be considered false advertising or bait n switch or something?
HOTEL HOTEL HOTEL , air b n bs are posh t**t rip offs lol n the bane of peoples lives in villages 🤬
I've seen Airbnb's with requirements that you pretty much have to clean the place and are also charged a large cleaning fee. Nope - hotels for me.
Why wouldn't you have to clean the place, though? You clean up after yourself at home. And hopefully at a friend or family members home if you stay with them.
Load More Replies...Erm u pay a cleaning charge just to clean there wtf ur deluded ! Get a hotel no cleaning needed relaxed sorted
I don't use Airbnb, but if I did I'd do a Google Earth search before I committed. At least it should take care of any major potential outdoor issues.
I won't do ABNB anymore when we found cameras in the last one. If there's a hotel, I would rather do that.
All of our vacations are either visiting family or sailing on a specific cruise line. Either way, we know in advance what we're getting.
I've stayed in some gorgeous AirBnBs, but not a single one had clean floors. Even the penthouses needed to be vaccumed or swept. Back to hotels...
A few which are indeed upsetting, lots where people too lazy to do a quick research, some look like the owners were forced to find a last minute solution due to accidents/ill-behaving guests (however, arriving guests need to be notified), some where people got what they booked and expected better.
