Nothing is safe from wear and tear. Time gets to all of us. Fortunately, there is a subreddit called 'Fix It' where people post pictures of the things that they need help with, and the members of the community provide them with clear instructions on how to take care of the issue, saving them time, money, and a whole lot of headaches.

So in order to remind you that becoming self-sufficient doesn't mean isolating yourself, we put together some of the most popular cases we found on 'Fix It.' From broken appliances to damaged furniture, where there's a will, there's a way!

Your shower was likely installed with tiles directly over drywall, so once moisture seeps through it damages the drywall and tiles can cave in. The tiles and drywall need to be ripped out. You can do this yourself, it's actually kind of fun, just avoid the wall with the faucet until you can pick around it so you don't damage the plumbing. Then the wall has to be checked for mould, then it needs new drywall, a vapour barrier (critical), then tiles - those should be done by a professional.

There is a chemical that can be poured on crumbling concrete which basically glues it all. But it is designed for a small spot and would be ridiculously expensive to apply to the entire driveway.

Such wholesome communities aren't exclusive to the internet. Since a woman named Martine Postma established what is considered to be the first repair café in Amsterdam in 2009, the concept of free events at which volunteers with valuable skills assist participants with broken possessions has spread far and wide.

Over 50 cafés operate throughout the Netherlands, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

In the United States, people have reportedly begun convening regularly at coffee shops and event spaces in New York, Chicago, Palo Alto, Los Angeles, Seattle, and other cities to fix busted items.

I install these and fix them for a living.

There are two reasons why this would happen.

1. Someone was trying to break back into their home as they had locked the keys inside.
2. Someone else tried to break in.

I was a toolmaker who serviced the dies that make ranges/stoves. This is called a draw wrinkle, and it comes from not having enough pressure in the draw pad during the creation of the oven wrapper. This cannot be fixed without disassembling the range, and replacing the entire oven cavity, which you do not want to do. If it's under warranty, contact the manufacturer. If it's not, new range time. This defect is entirely cosmetic, it will not affect the operation of the range at all, nor the safety. Source: I was a toolmaker for Whirlpool. Edit: I can also tell you that is not a Whirlpool/Maytag/Magic Chef product. The geometry of the ribs is different, because I milled them.

Apparently they can't. Those "winkles" are a result of the stamping process for making the body of the oven. They're normal and not something you can do anything about.

This is to Prevent the racks being pulled out so far that they fall (along with all your hot food). You can still remove the racks, but you have to raise the front of it a significant height. It's a Very Important safety feature.

They're not talking about the v shape in the rack support, they are talking about the smaller wrinkles in the oven enamel. Above and to the right of what you're looking at.

Those "wrinkles" are simply an artifact of the sidewall forming process. Anyone who thinks this is an issue has NO IDEA how things work.

You’re kidding, right? Those are the stops that keep you from pulling your oven rack out too far such that it crashes to the ground. Play with it a little bit – you may have your oven rack in backwards. I can’t tell from the picture.

Isn't the inside of the oven supposed to look like this? The wrinkles or grooves are there to help prevent the racks from sliding out easily. Pretty sure that whomever took this picture just has the metal rack upside down. The part of the rack sticking up like a triangle is supposed to sit nicely in the groove EDIT- I now see the wrinkles OP was referring to, but I'm pretty sure the metal rack is still upside down.

The wrinkles are to the right of the rack. The rack and its grooves are not the problem.

Please clean your water dispensers thoroughly every once in a while! So many things can form/get lodged in the water path which you can’t really see and might not even notice in your water if you’re in a rush to drink. From bugs crawling up inside to mold developing. My roommates and I discovered roaches inside our room’s dispenser after it was left unused due to Covid restrictions keeping us from returning to our room. Had to empty nearly one large 12 L bottle plus cleaning chemicals down it to make it safe again.

But tinkering has been becoming an increasingly harder challenge. Unlike the things made by older generations, it’s hard to get inside an iPod, and even when you do, you face a battery and computer chip rather than moveable components that can be adjusted and replaced.

Even the businesses that supply the repair industry have become increasingly scarce. For example, in an attempt to boost plunging profits, RadioShack switched from selling cables, connectors, and widgets for garage and basement hobbyists to selling smartphones and other wireless devices all the way back in 2009.

Yep, I can personally attest that this works. A few years ago around Christmas, there was a string of garage break-ins in my neighborhood. Everyone except us were broken into and had things stolen. I went out back the day after and the thief had tried to get in and got a closer look; the wood around the trim was splintered and there was a big dent in the door where they tried to kick it in.

The societal shift toward products that are untouchable, robotic, and useless when single parts break down has given rise to a number of negative consequences, such as growing landfills.

Overall, the U.S. produces 268 million tons of trash annually. The average American throws away 4.5 pounds of trash per day, compared to 2.68 pounds in 1960, and most of it is comprised of recyclable items.

While we can't just slash the number in half in one go, the subreddit 'Fix It' is doing its part.

u/totally_bored_dude:
So this works on whiteboards... If you leave something on too long, it will leave what you are seeing. What I do is take the marker and just go over it again and quickly wipe it off. It tends to "lift" the stained part and since the new mark isn't fully dry, it comes off. You could try it on a small section to see if it works.

FYI, this also works if someone uses a permanent marker on a whiteboard. Use the "Dry Erase" marker to lift the permanent marker and get it off the board.

Speaking from experience here this happened because the condition of the plaster/render behind the tiling is in poor condition; it’s likely already sopping wet. You should be able to fall against the tiles without this happening. You’ll need to take down the all loose tiles and assess what’s there before you repair this. You’ll probably not want to wait a year, though it’s up to you but more of the tiles are going to start falling off now.

Brown stains that appear in different places is rodent pee. You could cut a hole in the ceiling and push a nutty trap up there, keep checking it. Something like Zinsser stain block will cover it.

Considering how much of the grout has come loose around that tile I would have to agree, it's an installation issue.

Kitchen Cabinets Suddenly Collapse. Who Do I Call For This? Is It Worth DIY?

u/screaminporch:
Whoever hung them to begin with must have had no clue what they were doing. A decent handyman can put them back correctly. Any damaged cabinet boxes can hopefully be fixed by glue/clamp/screw.

These appear to have been simply glued onto the walls. The astonishing thing is that they stayed up long enough for the kitchen to apparently have been in use for some time, before all then coming off at the same time.

There's a comment above saying you can call the manufacturer and tell them it's a danger to you and your family and they'll replace it due to a number of lawsuits. Apparently it doesn't matter how old the stove is.

I've seen this happen when someone has use weedkiller on the hard standing, and this has killed the grass. The solution is time. The grass for the surrounding area will recolonise it. However, if you want a quicker fix, there's a mixture of grass seed, fertiliser, and colourant that can be sprayed over the area (protect the hard standing). Although, the quickest way is to take out the dead grass, and re-turf the area.

You can purchase a touch up pen, should come with a clearcoat on one end and color on the other. It also should have an abrasive stick in it to clean out the scratch. Put some color in it let it dry then clear over it. Or just straight clear. I he they run about $10-12 for them.

"Perspex cement" also called "acrylic cement" it's a solvent weld for Perspex.

I've only ever once used it many years back,, but it seemed to work well.

I'd apply it sparingly myself.

Does that look like a full bag? I'd be questioning where the rest of it went, hopefully not down the toilet.

Repair wise, if you have a spare patch around, you can get carpet joining tape but you need a good carpet iron to install it. Might be easier to get a carpet repair/installer to look at it.

Fixing Scuff Marks On Eyeglasses?

Fixing Scuff Marks On Eyeglasses?

u/[deleted]:
I used to work at lenscrafters. Your AR layer is peeling. You could recoat, but no one will recommend it. You'll see uneven spots of AR coating then it will bubble and peel from that. You'd need to strip the whole lens and re apply and for that there is no machine or process to do it as well as the AR coating being the most costly part of the lenses next to the machining of the lenses. Lenses themselves cost very little whole AR coating is expensive. Basically need new lenses.

New material?

I can't tell exactly what/where I'm looking at. But this isn't stained/finished wood. It is some type of laminated veneer. And you went all the way through down to material underneath.

There isn't going to be any "fixing" this without replacement.

Change it or embrace the damage and use it to learn why craftmen are as expensive as they are. --- Find a piece of veneer that's fitting in colour and vein, give the sanded part a clear cut, glue in a precisely cut of the new veneer, you'll need glue (not the basic all around glue, but good woodwork-glue), and pressure for ~24h, sand it down again, use a matching finish. --- It'll be expensive and imperfect, but a visible lesson on costs, and why less is sometimes more.

Shattered New Induction Cooktop

Shattered New Induction Cooktop

u/unaOnWytNoCrust:
Idk, I personally wouldn't cut corners with something that's high voltage, glass, and topped with scalding hot and heavy liquids. Then again a clear tempered glass top would look pretty cool, like a transparent Gameboy.

If you can find one that actually fits just right and is the appropriate material and thickness, go for it. I get the feeling you won't save much money that way though. It's still a pane of glass safely delivered to your door.

Consider all the time and potential issues you'll completely skip buying the correct part.

How Do I Fix This Gap In The Stairs?

How Do I Fix This Gap In The Stairs?

u/OmahaYessa:
Skirt board is the way to go. It’s a large piece of wood that has the cutouts for steps in it, which you then can put baseboard along the top of so your stairs get one smooth line of baseboard going down. It’s either remove existing baseboard or remove and add skirt board.

It looks like the depth setting may be off. A lot are set to be installed 2-⅜ or 2-¾ to center. If you take the lock back apart. On the bolt mechanism you should see those markings. Try to switch set it to 2-¾. As it looks like the diameter is fine, it's just pulled too closely to the edge.

I recently learned that the smart option for that sort of thing is just to call a locksmith *before* you spend a bunch of time messing around with it. It'll take him about 10 minutes, and if you need any different thingamabobs than what came with it, he'll already have something in the truck that'll work.

How To Fix My Kitchen Island That My Ex Kicked A Dent In?

How To Fix My Kitchen Island That My Ex Kicked A Dent In?

u/the_perkolator:
If it's the finish panel, you can replace it by removing the corner molding, remove the panel that's probably glued on (which looks like a laminated hardboard panel) and replace it - but if it's the actual cabinet box's side panel, this is a MUCH more involved replacement since it's assembled and installed with countertop.

What Needs To Happen Now? I Hired A Service To Install In-Wall Wiring And Mount A New TV. Looks Like The Installer Just About Cut Through Stud On First Floor Of 2 Story House. I Want To Cry

u/screaminporch:
Don't over-react. Even a big notch like that out of one stud is almost never going to result in an issue. Since studs are generally only seeing compressive forces, if you are worried you can cut a tight fitting piece and wood glue it back in (or construction adhesive). It will be as strong as it ever was. No need to tear into wall to replace entire stud.

It does baffle me why he didn't just move over when he hit the stud.
