History Ain’t Pretty
Those that don't study history are doomed to repeat it. Those that do study history are doomed to watch everyone else repeat it.
And some study history to learn how to repeat it. The Heritage Foundation's Project 2025 has many ideas taken from how Hitler shut down democracy in Germany.

True, but banning them IS BANNING THEM. They aren't moving them to another section of the library titled by age, they are removing them from the library because somebody decided they don't think children, that aren't their children, should read them. They must have forgotten that their children, can find much worse on the phone that's in their hand.
You move them from the elementary school library, to the high school library.
Buzzy, I think children's parents should be making those choices, not you, me or politicians, librarians or teachers.. and especially not "moms for liberty"
CajunBreaux - Out of the 70,000+ public schools in the USA, please name the ones where this is happening. Please be specific. I'm sure there are thousands, because why such a fuss over 1 or 2, right?! So, to make it easier, you only have to list as many as BP will let you fit in a comment. I'd like to look into this further, as I for one, appreciate FACTS. Thanks in advance!
Clearly, you didn’t study history nor do you know the definition of “woke” because it’s not a new movement. Remember the end to segregation and women’s suffrage? That was woke af. Black people and women couldn’t achieve those rights without the help of white men.
The woke crowd? I think you accidentally used “woke wrong” nbd, I’ll help. When people say “woke” they are referring to they type of folks who champion libraries and teach evolution (science, not 4,000 year old mythology only believed by a small demographic compared to the worlds population- but get this, they believe in teaching about that TOO among other belief structures) and that Jim Crow laws are a bad thing, we did, and shouldn’t do again. And that diversity and cultural differences are a strength! You’re probably meant those who used to call themselves “conservatives” who are now sliding faster than ever toward neo-fascist Christian nationalism (or “snowflakes”) the ones desperate to remain the dominant culture (which is often white superiority) who ban books, censor everything that doesn’t agree with their sensitive and extremely narrow set of personal religious beliefs, and despite factual evidence literally want to ban teaching crucial sciences and the US history of slavery because its a bad look for white people. I got you.😉
@Arkham Wohlfert Serious question - why are all Murricans Online™ religious and political extremists? The attitude appears to be "everything we do is right and must never be questioned, everything the other side do is wrong by default. They're so stupid the we should ban them from speaking, and we should remove their right to vote because we all know they'll get it wrong". It's exactly the same regardless if they worship the blue Ayatollah or the red Ayatollah, it's the *exact* same behaviour. Is there any kind of reason behind it do you know, or is it just one of those "we've always done it this way" things?
@ChickyChicky- “Woke” means being consciously aware and attentive to important social issues, typically related to racial and social injustices. Some Americans feel history relating to the civil rights of black people and Native Americans is considered “offensive.”
Conservatives are snowflakes, holy hell. And so small minded to think that just because they don't personally benefit from changes like more inclusive language, that change has no reason to exist.
What's wrong with those terms? How does it hurt others to use those terms? That's weird that "chestfeeding" is on that list. I am a woman, both by sex and gender. I did a form of "chestfeeding" with my baby because she wouldn't latch at first. A tube was taped to my chest and we used a syringe to put pumped milk into her while we tried to get her to latch. Eventually she figured it out and was simply breastfed. Chestfeeding is a feeding technique, same as bottle feeding. Strange that someone would be offended by that.
Everything is wrong with those terms. It tries to erase womanhood. They try to hide the fact that men and women are different. The word for a person with a penis is man. The word for someone who can give birth is woman.
Those that try to prevent history lessons very much see nothing wrong with the atrocities we are to learn from it and most certainly wouldn't mind if it repeated itself.
Banning / restricting books. Sounds quite familiar. 1933 Germany. George Orwell...
https://www.nbcnews.com/nbc-out/out-news/alabama-library-flagged-childrens-book-authors-last-name-gay-rcna119747 Autoflagging all books that contain the word gay as sexually explicit without anyone actually reading them is not curation, it's censorship. https://www.tallahassee.com/story/news/politics/2024/09/13/florida-school-board-pays-banned-book-same-sex-penguins/75189757007/ Is this the type of obscenity you're scared of? Literally no one is advocating for giving children inappropriate materials for their age, the actual argument is asking the question of why entire classes of people are being considered inappropriate.
Why are you comparing those stories to what I said? I don’t want any books banned. I’m not scared of any obscenities. I want kids to learn ALL the history. Racism, slavery, LGBTQ, the fight for civil rights and women’s rights. But the lesson plan for first graders is going to have different material than seniors in high school. Stop arguing something I never said.
Why not? Not every child is at the same reading/maturity level as every other child. When you start banning books, you start banning knowledge and that’s a mighty slippery slope
when I study history, I feel happy, but only because I was really into magic tree house and I survived books as a kid
If you judge history based on today’s standards and mores, you are an insufferable progressive.
Because conservatives like to say that the U.S. has never been and currently isn’t a racist, sexist country.

Studying history makes me happy because it is interesting . It doesn’t make me proud or furious nor give me feelings of guilt because I didn’t participate in those things. It’s called objectivity.
I loved history but remembering exact dates spoiled it form me.
Load More Replies...Couldn't agree more. Exact dates are easy to put into multiple-choice answers which are the cheapest way to do wide-scale testing. What tf difference does it make if you think Germany invaded Poland on Sept. 1, 1939 or March 3, 1941. If you don't understand WHY they invaded and how the world responded, it's absolutely meaningless. Standardized testing has ruined education.
what i personally feel is relief that the past is gone, with some vague apprehension that it may come back at some point, and hope that it won't happen in my lifetime
I decline to be furious about what ignorant people did hundreds of years ago. I try to focus my efforts on living responsibly here and now.
I hate this quote. While yes, some parts of it are true, there are historical moments to make you happy and proud!
Well, it specifically says "sometimes" and opposing to that "if ... always". Your moments aren't denied.

There’s probably no more entertaining way to learn history than through memes and engaging online content. Let’s be honest—it’s far more captivating than textbooks. To explore why history feels exciting everywhere but the classroom, Bored Panda reached out to Angel Lawson, a history postgraduate student at the University of Birmingham and content creator on Instagram and TikTok.
“I find that history curriculums, especially in the UK, aren’t designed to make you love learning, and that definitely translates into how history is taught in UK schools,” Angel told us. “The majority of history curriculums focus on the last three hundred years and are so broad that you never get to explore the ‘nitty-gritty’ facts that might interest a wider range of people.”

Don’t tell a girl she can’t do it because that just makes her prove you wrong
Angel explained that the pressure to achieve good grades is also a factor. “The goal of needing to get a grade in GCSE and A-Level by learning broad facts is why many people don’t find history interesting. Regurgitating the same topics over and over again—like Weimar Germany or the Industrial Revolution—isn’t something most people particularly enjoy.”

But Jesus Spoke English.... It Is Right There In The Bible
Seriously, they're crazy... had a neighbor once tell me with absolute righteous indignation that everything came straight from the original bible, in the original English... when I pointed out that the bible wasn't originally in english, she told me that it absolutely was because they had the original bible - in the original English... at Oral Roberts University
Where’s The Love?
Probably part of the reason they rebelled and left the Empire a few years after the war.
However, Angel believes this can change. “It would be nice to see a broader learning scope, from the establishment of the Anglo-Saxons in England to more modern events, like the early 2000s. When you compare that to sixty-second viral videos online sharing shocking historical facts the general public often doesn’t know, it’s easy to see why history gains traction on social media.”

“You’re never going to learn in school why the London Tube system had to avoid plague pits or hear the personal stories of people from the past who had difficult childhoods, ” Angel went on. “This humanization of people who lived hundreds of years ago is exactly why so many are drawn to the niche parts of history.”

If you do your homework, which I know folk don’t want to do, a huge amount of artefacts that are held by the British Museum were either sent there or willingly given to the British because they were at risk from various people who were hell bent on destroying them due to religious pressure. So yeah, there’s a lot of guilt (and rightfully so) but there’s a lot there that would’ve been destroyed without the British Museum.

she was an astronomer, but this story didn't happen. the director's wife recommended that he hire her, so he did. at first, fleming started out with administrative work, but the director himself formally invited her to join the observatory, teaching her how to identify stars and the like. she was one of the founding members of the harvard computers, a group of all-female "human computers" who were hired to perform observatory duties (including discovering and classifying stars).
