Irena Sendler (1910-2008) Helped Smuggle Jewish Children Out Of The Warsaw Ghetto During Ww2, Providing Them With False Identity Documents And Shelter With Willing Polish Families Or In Orphanages And Other Care Facilities, Saving Those Children From The Holocaust
The German occupiers suspected Sendler's involvement in the Polish Underground and in October 1943 she was arrested by the Gestapo, but she managed to hide the list of the names and locations of the rescued Jewish children, preventing this information from falling into the hands of the Gestapo. Withstanding torture and imprisonment, Sendler never revealed anything about her work or the location of the saved children. She was sentenced to death but narrowly escaped on the day of her scheduled execution, after German officials were bribed to obtain her release.
Sad epilogue: Despite having socialist leanings her entire previous life, the socialist government of Poland considered her suspicious because they considered her actions indicated a disrespect of authority so interrogated her so harshly that she lost her unborn baby. This is the same socialist government widely respected for being only just as authoritarian as necessary to prevent Soviet reoccupation.

Worth mentioning: it wasn't like 10 or even 100 children. It was AT LEAST 2500.
Irena Sendler was little known until three high school girls in Kansas discovered and researched her, even meeting her in person. The book is "Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project."

She was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. The person who got it instead of her was a guy with a slideshow about climate change...
Um no. That's not quite true. She was nominated twice. In 2003, Shirin Ebadi won for her efforts to promote democracy and human rights, especially those of women and children in Iran. Al Gore won in 2007 and he had more than a slideshow about climate change

George And Willie Muse, Two African American Brothers Who Were Kidnapped As Children In 1899 And Forced To Perform As Sideshow Attractions Because They Were Albinos
George and Willie were prevented from contacting their family by their manager, who kept them as modern day slaves, since they were unpaid. The two boys were told that their mother Harriet was dead – a lie, as their mother was still alive and was constantly searching for them. She eventually found the two boys working for the Ringling Brothers Circus and their family was reunited. Harriet successfully sued Ringling Brothers for the treatment of George and Willie. George Muse died of heart failure in 1972 while Willie carried on until 2001 when he died at the age of 108.

This is an image of innocence before that innocence was murdered. That is what happened, that is fact.
Our and the next generation needs to learn how this really was! BP are erasing words that are actually true and it's taking away from the history every human NEEDS to know about. I'm glad that the comments aren't censored, but unfortunately they often are.

A Geisha After Washing Her Hair, Before Styling It, In Japan In 1905
Geisha are a class of female Japanese performing artists and entertainers trained in traditional Japanese performing arts styles, such as dance, music and singing, as well as being proficient conversationalists and hosts. Their distinct appearance is characterised by long, trailing kimono, traditional hairstyles and oshiroi makeup. Geisha entertain at parties known as ozashiki, often for the entertainment of wealthy clientele, as well as performing on stage and at festivals
My hair is that long and it weighs a ton, especially when wet. I can't put it up in a high ponytail as it's too heavy.

Severe Case Of Syphilis In The Early 1900s Before The Discovery Of Penicillin, Which Would Become The Main Treatment
I don't understand people who say that everything used to be better. It wasn't.
Because they only see the past as heroic movies or romantic love stories, not the daily reality when most people starved or were almost slaves, when a simple tooth decay could kill you. A few things here and there were maybe better, but when it comes to health, definitely not

Soviet War Veteran Next To An Eternal Flame On The Anniversary Of Victory Day, 1966
Victory Day (May 9th) is a holiday that commemorates the Soviet victory over Germany in 1945.
I regret that the Russians’ awful, aggressive government of today has pushed the rest of the West away from honoring the Russian people’s brave, catastrophic sacrifices to repel and then overpower the Nazis. The Normandy invasion was heroic, but the offensive from Stalingrad to Berlin was a far greater sacrifice, enacted on the orders of Stalin, a monster as terrible as Hitler.
A "samovar" is a kind of pot, and a "moloch of war" is something that has required appalling sacrifice. People, like this man, gave everything for his country. In turn, these people were treated very badly and shunned.
The "leaders" who instigate the wars don't care about the cost, because they aren't the ones who will have to pay.

This Is How Passengers Would Board Airships. This Photo Shows British Airship R101 In 1930
I know that airships were far from practical,; they were huge, extremely expensive, hard to maintain ad not very safe, but damn, they were cool.
The R101 was built not far from where I live, the huge sheds where it was built can be seen in the background are still standing today. One is still used to build airships and the other is a sound stage for several box office smashes
The plan was to have a dirigible boarding hookup atop the Empire State Building in New York. Fortunately, this idea was scrapped.

people forget these were mostly kids from 17-24 fighting, all those decades earlier. Most southern soldiers had no vested interest in slavery other than their states wanted to secede and back then people were more loyal to their state than the feds. Most norther soldiers joined up because it was about saving their country from rebels.
Although they were "enemies" being on opposing sides, they did not hate each other. They were fighting out of loyalty to their state and their families.
I wonder how each side softened their view of each other over the decades

A Man Who Has Been Badly Tarred And Feathered Seeks Medical Help, Date Unknown
Tarring and feathering is a form of public torture and punishment used to enforce unofficial justice or revenge. The victim would be stripped naked, or stripped to the waist. Wood tar (sometimes hot) was then either poured or painted onto the person while they were immobilized. The victim then either had feathers thrown on them or was rolled around on a pile of feathers so that they stuck to the tar.
I am shocked this practice continued until it could be photographed. I had always thought it was a medieval torture like putting someone in stocks.
There are instances of tarring and feathering during The Troubles in Northern Ireland in the 70s. There was even a d**g dealer tarred and feathered in 2007: https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2007/aug/30/northernireland.humanrights

My mother said he often slept on the porch because he was too tired to come inside. I could trace the coal tattoos on his arms and shoulders, caused by the coal dus settling in under his skin.

I have very clear memories when I was around 3 yrs old playing in the back "green" which was about 4 foot tall in weeds, the toilets & bathtub were in the hallway shared with the other people living on the floor, so most of my baths were taken in an old tin tub in front of the fireplace! The Michelin Man is white because rubber tires are naturally a grey/white color. It was not until 1912 that carbon chemicals were mixed into the white tires which turned them black. The change was structural, not aesthetic. By adding carbon, tires became more durable. Michelin also began reviewing restaurants so that more people would travel further distances in their cars to eat at these restaurants. This in turn would wear down their tires faster, and force them to buy more. The Michelin star system goes up to three and has the following criteria: 1 star: "A very good restaurant in its category". 2 stars: "Excellent cooking, worth a detour". 3 stars: "Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey".
In the voice of Michael Caine "not many people know that."

In 1978 A Ferrari Was Discovered Buried In A Yard In Los Angeles After Children Playing In The Dirt Alerted Police About Something Shallowly Buried
The car had been reported stolen 4 years prior. Later it transpired that the owner, plumber Rosendo Cruz, apparently conspired to commit insurance fraud with the supposed thieves. Robert Mcgee, Scalped At The Age Of 14 In 1864
McGee was working as a teamster with H.C. Barret to transport a caravan of flour to Fort Union in New Mexico Territory. Whilst on the road, somewhere around Kansas, the wagon train was set on by a band of Brule Sioux Native Americans, resulting in the majority of the teamsters being tortured and killed. McGee was shot in the back, had two arrows put through him as well as 64 square inches removed from his scalp - all whilst he was still awake. His survival was miraculous. This photo was taken in 1890.
As my father put it, "what, do you think those first nations wanted some greasy cowboys scalp?".
Load More Replies...No one is mentioning he was just a child of 14. Imagine yourself in his shoes. Also, Native Americans “counted coup” in battle by simply touching an enemy warrior or stealing their weapon. It wasn’t a violent act. Scalping was reserved for enemies who were killed in battle, so already dead. It was European colonists who encouraged scalping by paying Native Americans to collect scalps of the settlers’ enemies, whether they were other tribes or other Europeans. So the scalping of the white people going west was not originally a Native American practice. In a way, it was whites doing it to whites, but just skipping a couple generations.
This is a fallacy that originated in the revisionist history of the American Indian Movement in the 1960s. The earliest known historical references to scalping in North America refer to Iroquois displaying scalps of their enemies to show war prowess. The French, who assimilated with the Native Americans wherever possible, found scalping horrific!

From 1892 to 1954, nearly 12 million immigrants arriving at the Port of New York and New Jersey were processed there under federal law.
Those Immigrants are the ones that now want to stop immigrants from coming to the USA. Now isn't that ironic?

This is only true if he immigrated from China, Japan, Korea, or South East Asia. This is 100% fabricated if he came here from any other country. The history of immigration laws in the United States just doesn't square with your statement. The very FIRST law regulating European, African, or Latin American immigration into the United States of America was passed in 1965, known as the Hart-Cellar Act. Prior to 1965, the only regulation of immigration was from the 1924 Johnson-Creed Act, which in theory created a 2% quota from immigrants of ALL countries, however in actuality these quotas could not be enforced on anybody who was entitled to US citizenship by birth if they had been born in the United States. And at that time, a Supreme Court decision had entitle pretty much anybody to US Citizenship if their descendants or their countrymen could claim to have been in the Western Hemisphere at the time of the ratification of the Constitution. This included pretty much EVERYBODY except Asians

At least the USA has enormous land space for immigrants and many early arrivals created more than the locals could to produce progress. You do not see China or Russia invite them to live there, do you?

He would lead autopsies on corpses, removing the skin and conducting research on methods to preserve the skin. In the following years he collected an archive of about 2000 "hides". Masaichi put some of his unique collection of tattooed hides and groomed skin that had been outsourced in the early 1940s in an air raid shelter. The Mentally Disabled Hidden Cousins Of Queen Elizabeth II
Nerissa Jane Irene Bowes-Lyon (1919-1986, left) and Katherine Juliet Bowes-Lyon (1926-2014, right) were the daughters of John Herbert Bowes-Lyon, the brother of the Queen’s mother. Neither of the cousins ever learned how to talk. The 1963 edition of Burke's Peerage listed Nerissa and Katherine as having died in 1940 and 1961 respectively, but in 1987 it was revealed that this was false and they had been placed in Earlswood Hospital for mentally disabled people in 1941. In the terminology of the era, both were classified as "imbeciles". The sisters received no money from the family other than £125 paid to Earlswood each year, and no family members attended their funeral.
This is what the upper classes only breeding with each other results in...Google the Hapsburgs.
Katherine could have almost been Elizabeth’s twin. Unfortunately, back in the day this was what most families were advised to do with mentally or physically disabled children by their doctors, of all people. Even if they didn’t want to do it, they were gaslit into thinking it was for the best. I don’t know, maybe it was in some cases where the family was already stretched more than they could handle, so were unable to take on the extra time, effort, and work of caring for their relative. I can understand that, but wealthy families could hire staff to look after them, even if they were that much more of a handful, while still making them a part of their family, ffs. It’s hard to pass judgement while looking t the past through modern eyes. Th8ng that were 100% acceptable when I was a child (I’m 63) are looked upon now as 100% UNacceptable. Society evolves and gets better, little by little. We just have to resist devolving and becoming worse.
This is so sad. But unfortunatly common among upper class families back in the day. Near where I live there is this big mansion that used to be the home of the Hofman-Bang family. Back in the very early 1900s they had a son with down's syndrome and they hid him away on the estate for most of his life. There's only about 2 known photos of the son. Eventually, though, he was allowed to have a job with someone outside the grounds of the estate but I think that the parties connected to this job wasn't allowed to tell anybody where their new helper came from. It does seem, though, that behind the four walls of the mansion this son was well-loved and cared for. But nobody outside was to know about it. Status and social image, I guess
And yet millions came to their cousin's funeral and a whole country mourned. Interesting priorities
There is no proof that either of theirs ailments were because of the inbreeding among royals. And that's because no one ever bothered to examine them and check. Very little is known about their health, especially genetically as it was not a thing for most of their lives. Inbreeding is a known trope, but examples most commonly known refer to people of the past a lot more distant than 1900s.

I read somewhere that she was considered the most beautiful woman in Iran in her tike, and that several men committed ṣụịč̣ịḍẹ because she rejected them and broke their hearts. Lovely dress though.

Some common symptoms include: Menstrual irregularities: Periods that are heavy, long, irregular, or absent. This is called amenorrhea if there are no periods, oligomenorrhea if periods are skipped, or anovulatory periods if there is bleeding but no ovulation. Hirsutism: Excessive hair growth on the face, chest, back, or buttocks. This condition affects up to 70% of women with PCOS. Acne: Severe, late-onset, or persistent acne that doesn't respond well to common treatments. Weight gain: Weight gain or difficulty losing weight, especially around the waist. Skin conditions: Darkening of the skin, particularly along neck creases, in the groin, and underneath breasts. Skin tags, which are small excess flaps of skin in the armpits or neck area, may also appear. Hair loss: Thinning hair or hair loss from the head, also known as male-pattern baldness.
I suffered from PCOS all throughout my menstruating life. I had to be on birth control pills to have regular, controllable cycles, my leg hair was difficult to manage and I would often have to shave twice a week to keep them smooth in high school (uniform skirts, you know), my acne was always a pain, and it was really difficult to keep my weight down. I'm menopausal/post-menopausal now, but it sucks that I never got to just let my cycles happen and pop the occasional Midol.

This restored photo was taken in 1880.
Looks like he has 2 brain cells rattling around in there, and never the twain shall meet.
Too mean to be using an orange cat braincell, so at least he wasn't wasting the one ginger braincell all the kittas in the 1880s were sharing.

Given that the photo is taken from one in which he is standing up, and that he was killed in 1881, he was unlikely to be dead when it was taken.

In order to graduate from the Italian Cavalry School in Pinerolo near Turin, every officer was required to successfully perform the 20 feet 'descent of Mombrone', the name of an old ruined castle built upon the hill, some 3 miles from Pinerolo.
I do think show jumping, 3 day eventing and horse racing to be animal abuse. Training methods often abusive. And yes I used to ride horses.

The word hippie is derived from the word hip, which conveys being up to date and fashionable. In the 1950s, “hip” was commonly applied to the Beats (people who rejected standard narrative values), such as Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, who represented and inspired the bohemian artist communities in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City. These Beat writers and thinkers were idolized by a growing number of youths in the 1960s, and by 1965 a counterculture movement began to converge in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district. The term hippie was soon applied by local journalists to this new subculture, and the word gained national (and soon international) recognition in 1967 thanks in large part to the frequent use of the word by San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen. The term can be descriptive or derogatory and was not initially used by the youths to describe themselves.
Caen had earlier coined the name “beatnik,” and also noticed that the hippies, pacifists and non-materialistic, were appropriately at home in a city named after St. Francis of Assisi.
How are her feet not absolutely scorched? Was this photo taken in the early spring or mid-autumn?
Boxer Fred Bretonnel In 1920 At The Age Of 15 And In 1928 At The Age Of 23
In a career totalling 76 matches, he lost 18, drew 14 and won 42 with 14 knock outs. Bretonnel died due to suicide by hanging on 4th September 1928
Poor man. With that many fights and that facial evidence of their effects, I would suspect that he could have had a TBI, affecting his mental health.
“ His brother mentioned that the causes included a falling out with their father, his defeats in the ring, a bad association with a manager, and his partner's infidelity”

Ellis Island Immigrants Circa 1910. At The Time Of This Photo The Child Was 11 Months Old And Weighed 55 Pounds (25 Kilograms)
Ellis Island, situated within the US states of New York and New Jersey, was the busiest immigrant inspection and processing station in the United States. From 1892 to 1954, nearly 12 million immigrants arriving at the Port of New York and New Jersey were processed there under federal law. Today, it is part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and is accessible to the public only by ferry.
At the time it was thought that the fatter the baby was, the better. Which in a way was true, because malnourished babies where the first to die of polio, whooping cough and rubella.

Wilfred And Ruby Westwood, Circa 1900
At the time of this photo the brother and sister were 3 and 7 years old respectively
Googled them and it seems these two children were just having some genetic/hormonal issues. Their parents and 5 siblings were of normal shape. One source from 1900 said that the children were otherwise smart and very healthy (never fell sick). No matter what, I hope these poor kids had a somewhat nice life after all. It cannot have been a great life being displayed for paying audiences and put on postcards.
Hormones, hopefully. If it's willfully letting them eat that much it's very much not good

Bullet Bra In The 1950s
Invented in the 1940s, they were fashionable in the 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s, before softer, more natural looking bras became fashionable again.
Tell me you need feminism to protect your rights and bodily autonomy without telling me you need feminism ;-) I'm glad these are a historical relic, too.
OMG - the original 'lift and separate' Playtex bra. Mum would poke you in the eye when she wore one.
Some of these are true time capsules. Some are still quite disturbing.
Some of these could be my parents. I have pics of them "in the 1940s" and my dad was a soldier in WW II - he joined when he was 15 during the war! They got married in 1948 and only had me 21 years later and my bro two years after that, because they'd been told they couldn't have kids. Surprise!
Some interesting pictures. Would have enjoyed it more if there was less political commentary, palestinian hate and other stupid comments.
