When it comes to history, we often think of it in monumental, tragic, or epic terms. But rarely does “funny” top the list. Which is surprising, considering how hilarious we humans can be as a species—even in our biggest mistakes.

With almost 80K followers on Instagram, Daily Historian has clearly struck a chord with both history enthusiasts and those looking to learn something new in an unconventional way. To get the full story behind this entertaining account, Bored Panda reached out to its creator.
“I started Daily Historian in March of 2023,” he tells us. “There are really two main motivations behind the page. The first is leveraging social media to make history scholarship more accessible, interesting, and fun.”
“All corners of the internet are plagued by degenerate social media personalities, attention-seeking influencers, misinformation, and numerous other harmful forces,” the page owner believes. “Really, the ultimate goal of Daily Historian is to use digital media to counteract these negative influences and cultivate a community of curious minds, everyday leaders, and informed individuals who are passionate about exploring the complexities of human society.”

“The second motivation is a bit selfish,” he admits. “I just really like history, and unfortunately, there are not many ways to explore this passion in a professional manner, so the page is an outlet where I can delve into topics that interest me and share them with the world.”
What he didn’t expect was how quickly the page would grow.
“I didn’t think it would take off as fast as it did,” he says, “especially given the number of Instagram pages that just repost memes. But the addition of explanations in the captions was definitely the piece that pushed the envelope for Daily Historian.”
But it’s not just the popularity of Daily Historian that excites its founder—he finds equal joy in the connections he’s made through the page.
“The best part is interacting with like-minded individuals and engaging in deeper conversations about history than I normally would,” he says. “I’ve connected with so many researchers, professors, armchair historians, and casual history buffs that have helped broaden my knowledge and interest in history.”
“It’s such a pleasure to be able to enjoy this vast subject with so many others.”
“I also deeply enjoy using Daily Historian as a medium of expression,” the creator shares. Because his day job doesn’t provide the space to pursue his passion for history, this page serves as the perfect platform for it. “I cannot emphasize enough how much this page has taught me about history,” he adds.
It’s true that learning history from memes might not be the most thorough as cracking open a textbook, but it’s an incredible resource for those who find the discipline a bit tedious.
“While I would prefer everyone to get their information from research papers and high-level publications, that just isn’t realistic,” explains the mind behind Daily Historian.
“Most people don’t have the time, background knowledge, or interest to sit through a 30-page research paper or textbook section to learn about a specific subject in history. The page bypasses these pitfalls by presenting the viewer with a fun meme to introduce the subject and capture their interest, followed by a detailed explanation.”
“I think the rapid growth of Daily Historian is a testament to the effectiveness of this approach and reveals an underlying need for engaging and educational social media content,” the creator concludes. “I would love to see people with interests in subjects outside of history replicate this model and make a positive impact through social media.”
