Very many of the war graves of Allied soldiers have been adopted by school children in the Netherlands. They learn about the battles these soldiers fought in and they lay flowers.

You can just see it on her face: she doesn't give a damn! Also, that little dog looks like it is thinking "yup, that's my mom right there." 😁

She was neglected unwanted child who was forever trying to get her father's attention. Her mother died giving birth to her and Roosevelt's mother followed from illness a few days later. The President went on a "grief" journey for several years leaving baby Alice with an aunt. Coming back later he resumed raising her but with a back to back political schedule he was not prepared. She resented it her entire life trying endlessly to get his attention. I might add punishing him besides.

In case no one has posted this, recall what her father Teddy said to an official who complained that Alice was roller skating up and down the White House halls: "Senator, I can run the government, or I can control Alice. Which do you want me to do?" [pardon if this is slightly garbled]

She had an illegitimate child by Senator Borah. Was a beach to poor Eleanor.

In her later years, she was reported to tell people at Washington social gatherings, "If you don't have anything good to say about someone, sit next to me."

My cousin's middle name is for Alice Roosevelt - and now she's a teenager her parents are wondering why she's so rebellious! :D

The apple didn't fall from the tree. Her father, Teddy Roosevelt, was a rebellious and independent spirit. One of his unusual habits was keeping a small zoo while at the White House.

My parents, particularly my mom, have some stories of going through checkpoint Charlie with my sister and me as children.
