Periodic Table
Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev developed the foundational structure of the modern periodic table in the 1860s. Working with the approximately 60 elements known at the time, he arranged them based on atomic weight and observed recurring properties, leaving gaps where he believed undiscovered elements should sit. Remarkably, Mendeleev predicted the existence and characteristics of several elements yet to be found, such as Germanium, which he tentatively named "ekasilicon" long before its actual discovery in 1886.
This should be higher. Predicting the existence of an actual element by inference was one of the biggest scientific discoveries since Erontroscanese proved the Earth is round.

And in the short story "Day of an American Journalist in 2889" he described the power of media (the protagonist is a newspaper editor so influential he can topple governments), video calls, the Channel Tunnel, computers and the internet, which he described as "a glass device on every house that had access to a massive network of information".

In his classic 1953 novel Fahrenheit 451, science fiction author Ray Bradbury accurately described a technology remarkably similar to modern earbuds, decades before their widespread use. He painted a vivid picture of people listening to audio through small devices worn in their ears, writing: “And in her ears, the little seashells, the thimble radios tamped tight, and an electronic ocean of sound, of music and talk and music and talk coming in...” Bradbury not only foresaw the technology itself but also hinted at the potential for such devices to isolate individuals.

The Titanic Tragedy
Journalist and psychic William Thomas Stead wrote fictional stories years before the Titanic disaster that eerily mirrored the event, describing a ship sinking due to insufficient lifeboats and another hitting an Atlantic iceberg. These narratives tragically came to fruition with the 1912 sinking of the Titanic, which lacked adequate lifeboats after striking an iceberg. In a striking twist of fate, Stead himself was aboard the Titanic and was among the roughly 1,500 people who lost their lives.
There was another: the 1898 novel "Futility, or the Wreck of the Titan" by Morgan Robertson also described the sinking of a self-proclaimed "unsinkable" ship called Titan. She was also a two-masted, triple screwed liner with four funnels that sank in the North Atlantic in mid-april after striking an iceberg. In the book, the lack of lifeboats and freezing waters were major factors for the loss of lives. However, it can be argued that the Titanic, with the exception of her size, had a fairly standard design for a liner of her time, and that the lack of lifeboats had been addressed as a concern before her, even by the Titanic's architect Thomas Andrews himself. This was because the naval laws of the time (that required the number of lifeboats according the tonnage, and not the capacity) had been surpassed by the size of ships. Simplest explanation: both Robertson and Stead wrote about an accident that was just waiting to happen.
The naval laws also determined lifeboat numbers by how many water tight compartments were built. The Titanic had that particular number. The problem was multiple watertight compartments were damaged by the iceberg. So it would seem the Titanic lacked enough lifeboats but naval laws couldn't foresee that level of damage, which made it seem as if the builders were being cheapskates but we're indeed following requirements.

Mark Twain, whose real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was born in November 1835, shortly after Halley's Comet graced the skies. In 1909, he made a remarkably accurate prediction about his own demise, telling his biographer, 'I came in with Halley's Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it.' True to his words, Mark Twain died of a heart attack on April 21, 1910, just one day after Halley's Comet made its predicted return appearance.

Comets last for days at a time. Halley's Comet was in the sky for about a week that year. "Just one day" is an exaggeration.
Accurate or not, there must have been a first day that it was visible, so if he died a day after that then the statement is entirely correct.

After touring the United States in the early 19th century, French political philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville predicted a future rivalry between America and Russia in his famous book, Democracy in America. He wrote that these two nations would one day "hold the destinies of half the world in its hands," a surprising view at a time when both countries saw Great Britain as the main rival and were geographically distant. Tocqueville believed their different ways of thinking would inevitably lead to conflict, a prediction proven correct over a century later with the onset of the Cold War between the two superpowers.

What Arthur C Clarke did was write an essay describing what to him was obvious extensions of existing technology: putting together rockets, radio/TV transmitters, and geostationary orbit to produce a communication system with global coverage. The Two Moons Of Mars

Utilization Of Solar Energy

Load More Replies...While I am a fan of (I hate the term renewables) environmental energy, Some applications make no sense to me. Michigan for example has far more cloudy days than sunny ones during the winter. The wind generators make much more sense here, but solar arrays are popping up all over.
The only way of being sure what sort of energy collection and conversion makes sense is to look at the data. Big solar farms are a good idea anywhere that you've got sunshine and spare land. Michigan is much further south and probably less cloudy than where I live in NW England and we've got lots of solar farms, all of which are making money. The wind farms are mostly off-shore where there's more reliable wind. The missing link in all this is energy storage that'll last for months on end - to deal with the next "year without a summer" for example (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer). Getting that installed will require government regulation and subsidy, since energy storage that'll keep us going for months on end isn't commercially viable in the current market.

There's at least one professional news photography outfit (dating back to the days of black and white photos in newspapers) which these days has customized cameras which automatically send photographs back to "base" as soon as the photographer's taken it for the most rapid possible production time. The idea of a powered door opening itself using a sensor was obvious in 1899 - and could have been done fairly easily, if you wanted to use a pressure mat as the sensor (such as a flat bladder, underneath some sort of door mat arrangement, connected to a pneumatic switch which then operated an electrical mechanism). What made it future-thinking was the way it was an "apparently solid wall" rolling itself up out of the way without the need for a person to press a button or anything.

In "The World Set Free", the big threat he forsaw was that of aerial warfare - hence his introduction to a later edition of the book, published after the devasting bombing raids of WWII: "I told you so, you /damned/ fools" (His emphasis. I have a copy somewhere, not too sure where, or I'd give full details of the publication date and so on. He much wrote a longer introduction after the First World War, worrying about what might happen. And then it did happen, so...).

Check out "The Last Centurion" by John Ringo. It was published in 2008, and predicted a world wide pandemic, with many of the same symptoms as covid. It's been quite a while since I read it, but I'm pretty sure it took place, at least in part, in 2020.

I seem to remember Mad Magazine predicting everyone watching and carrying around on themselves devices that would show TV and movies back in the 1960s.
Remember the cartoons that talked about the future and what gadgets we would have? I want to find the cartoon and see if they were right.
Check out "The Last Centurion" by John Ringo. It was published in 2008, and predicted a world wide pandemic, with many of the same symptoms as covid. It's been quite a while since I read it, but I'm pretty sure it took place, at least in part, in 2020.
