Yep, and after he died, the government gave a half-hearted apology, saying that the police should never have arrested him. Too little too late

I don't think America ever thought he was nuts. China tried to make everyone THINK he was nuts because he was a whistle blower when they were trying to hide that COVID existed. It cost him his life. Who knows how long it would have taken if he didn't speak up.

50 Historical Figures People Thought Were Nuts At The Time But Were Proven To Be Right Years Later Stella Liebeck, the lady who got burned with McDonald's hot coffee. The media mocked her and accused her of a frivolous lawsuit but it was an ongoing problem that McDonald's served dangerously hot coffees that had injured many others. The coffee was hot enough to cause 3rd degree burns to her pelvic region and she was hospitalized for 8 days while she had to get skin grafts, and continued medical care for 2 years related to the burns. She originally just wanted her medical bills covered but McDonald's tried giving her an insultingly low amount, so then she was forced to open a lawsuit. The courts rightfully sided with her and forced McDonald's to regulate the temperature on their hot beverages.

I mean the story that got widely popularized was basically "stupid Karen wants millions because she didn't know coffee is hot" (courtesy of a powerful corporation controlling the narrative and making the story worthy of mockery). If it happened today and was shared like this on Bored Panda y'all would mock her too. Who knows how many Karen stories on this page are one-sided or twisted by the narrator in a similar way.

She was an older person at the time and the potential for infection of the burns was life-threatening. Not to mention painful. Her life revolved around medical treatment & pain management in a time she should have been enjoying her “golden” years. She only asked for $20k. Her medical bills. The reason the media portrayed it as frivolous was largely due to who was advertising on the networks. Legislatures who were lobbied by McDs pushed for tort reform to limit “frivolous” lawsuits used this as an example. Not only did McDs insult her by not taking an ounce of responsibility, they used her injury as a platform to prevent future lawsuits that could be redefined as frivolous and used the power of their dollar to sway not only the politicians and media, but the public in general. It became their campaign to limit consumer protection.

People still, sadly, mock her and keep saying how it's her fault. Not just McD's but places like Tim Hortons always have their hot water at boiling point and placed in flimsy cardstock cups. It's totally a safety hazard ignored.

We learned about this in a law class. McDonald's actually knew the coffee was too hot. According to company documents, the company found that serving overheated coffee allowed them to serve lower quality coffee. They knew the potential for lawsuits was higher but since the cost savings was more than expected legal fees they risked it anyway. The court awarded her such a high amount really to punish McDonald's and to make them and other companies think twice about potentially hurting customers just to save a few bucks.

There is a general idea that people (read: "those spoiled westerners") would file lawsuits for all sorts of petty reasons and the public automatically assumed this was the case with Stella as well. I know this case was mentioned as something humoristic in my country.

It is really just one country I so far have heard from who "file lawsuits for all sorts of petty reasons". But, I can understand why they do it in some cases. Without proper healthcare this is probably the only way for some to get their medical bills covered. And really, if they get injured by a third party, who could blame them for suing for medical bills?

I remember how fast food places used to serve scalding hot coffee. Same with hot water for tea. Burned my mouth on that watery lava many times back in the day. They would also fill the cups right up to the brim so they’d usually spill over and burn your hand (or whatever part it landed on), plus you had no room to add milk, or cream, or even a f*****g ice cube to cool it down to a drinkable temperature. If you just let it sit and cool down, you had a long wait. So Stella has my admiration and warmest wishes for a happy life, because her lawsuit did us all an enormous favor.

McDonalds was having about 3k lawsuits a year over burns. Everyone else took a few thou and shut up. Punative damages are not about rewarding the victim, they are about discouraging dangerous practices by business. They knew this would eventually happen and they knew what it would cost to replace the coffee machines. They made a conscious decision to keep the machines and pay off the few thou. Without this womans actions, people would still be getting scalded.

To find out why historical figures were sometimes dismissed for their ideas, we reached out to historian Bethany Moore who runs the blog History And Moore. She told Bored Panda that those who found themselves mocked and ridiculed were simply misunderstood by others. "This would mostly happen to scientists who were trying to get their ideas out to a wider audience, that necessarily didn’t have the right education to understand or the inclination to even listen," she added.

As an example, Moore mentioned a man called Ignaz Semmelweis. "He was an obstetrician (a doctor who specializes in childbirth) in the 1840s in Vienna and he noticed that fewer women were dying when they were inspected by a doctor who had washed their hands between examining patients." However, since he did not grasp why this was the case, others were reluctant to listen to him.

"He eventually ended up being lured to an asylum," the historian continued. "Tragically, after Semmelweis was removed from the hospital, more women started dying because they were not being examined by doctors who washed their hands. Handwashing didn’t become commonplace in medicine for at least another 30 years after Semmelweis first made the connection."

He worked in a city hospital for a time, that had many poor women who couldn't afford any care. His contemporary doctors would go from an autopsy of a rotting corpse* to delivering babys without washing their hands, infecting and killing tousands of women. Semmelweiss put up a bassin to wash hands saving many lives. After his dismissal death skyrocketed again.

Isn’t it funny how the “established” people in any group will do their best to ruin someone who challenges their practices, even though that person is right? Deaths plummeted while Semmelweis was working there, then skyrocketed after he left. Amazing how supposedly educated people like doctors could have their heads stuffed so far up their own asses that they couldn’t put two and two together and see the connection. Ego f*****g kills people, whether the egotist is a doctor, a CEO, or the “leader” of a country.

He died 14 days later from a gangrenous wound on his right hand that may have been caused by the beating." - Wikipedia.

Whistleblowers are the world’s most mistreated heroes. They don’t get enough credit in my opinion. It takes more guts than any of the self-proclaimed gun-toting tough guy posers could ever have for someone to let the world know a company, a person, a government is cheating them, lying to them, hurting them, letting them die, just to cut a profit, gain power, get revenge. Believe me, the retaliation for outing corporate/government/one-percenter criminals can be devastating. Whistleblowers have not only lost their jobs, they’ve lost their personal and professional relationships, their reputations, their futures, and their lives. Facing those possibilities, to get the truth out to the rest of us, takes true courage, commitment, strength, and endurance and, if we’re brutally honest with ourselves, not all of us can say we have those qualities.

The trouble was, Savile was making a lot of people a lot of money and while his behaviour was well known, it was more important to keep making that money. Not the charity money either, just general money. An Australian TV host, Don Burke, was also known to be abusive and likely to sexually assault women but because he was such a good earner for the network, it was all covered up. That's the reality of this sort of horror. Money means more than people.

Moore suggested that the study of our past is not only about learning different dates and names. "Yes, those are an important part of the study of history, but there is so much more to the subject. The study of history teaches us the good and the bad of humanity; the developments by ancient civilizations that have led to our society being the way it is today; and gives us a better understanding of the world, to name but a few reasons."

"History, and the study of it, is one of the building blocks of a rounded education, teaching us to be more than just one person and to recognize the influence we have on the world."

also Ignaz Semmelweis. Wikipedia "Described as the "saviour of mothers", Semmelweis discovered that the incidence of puerperal fever (also known as "childbed fever") could be drastically cut by the use of hand disinfection in obstetrical clinics. Puerperal fever was common in mid-19th-century hospitals and often fatal. Semmelweis proposed the practice of washing hands with chlorinated lime solutions in 1847 while working in Vienna General Hospital's First Obstetrical Clinic, where doctors' wards had three times the mortality of midwives' wards." The doctors didn't washed their hands after they performed an autopsy... this almost ruined his career

Nah, he was well respected, published many studies and got a boatload of honorific titles and medals. The one that got mocked, shipped off to an asylum and (probably) killed was Ignaz Semmelweis, for suggesting doctors should wash their hands after doing autopsies and before visiting the maternity ward.

He was well respected later when proven right, however when he first put forward his ideas he was criticized and mocked in medical associations and publications. Nowhere near as bad as Semmelweis, but still took time to be accepted

There is a similar campaign in the UK regarding ex-footballers. The claim is that repeated heading of the ball can lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy and Alzheimer's Disease. Former England and West Bromwich Albion centre-forward Jeff Astle was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and died aged 59. In Jeff's heyday the footballs were considerably heavier than they are today but that is not to say that modern balls do not cause brain damage. The Jeff Astle Foundation was set up in his memory to investigate the link between heading the ball and brain injury.

I saw a female former sports commentator (I can't remember her name) when asked about this situation, she very unempathetically said "oh they know what they're getting into when they sign up for this"... no they don't know what they're getting into completely and no one's mentioned the fact that it's been suggested that at least they should try to redesign the football helmets. I mean it hasn't been done in how many years... but it's been done- they're not still using those funny looking little leather hats with the weird earcups from back in the day... but the NFL doesn't want to spend the money on redesigning them to protect their players cause it cuts into their profits.

After all, this fascinating subject is an endless source of adventure. Just think about the grand battles, significant events, and world-shaking inventions. And it’s especially interesting to learn about intriguing historical figures who were simply regular folk without an obvious connection to greatness, Moore said.

"Ordinary, everyday people like William Shakespeare who helped the English language develop into the rich tapestry it is today. People like Ada Lovelace, who is considered the first computer programmer for her work with Charles Babbage. People like Rosa Parks, who stood up to a system rigged against her. Ordinary people have become well known for a variety of reasons, and it is not unfeasible to think that any of us could have the same influences in years to come."

He was threatened he took a huge image hit and his business opportunities suffered. He never let up on lance despite the media campaigns, threats, damage to his reputation and business, and the recrimination of his peers in the cycling community. Until surprise surprise in 2012 it came out that lance Armstrong was doping. Who could have foreseen that? If only someone had told us. Oh wait. Greg Lemond did. A decade ago.

Teapot calling the kettle black. Cycling has always been a dirty sport, and still is to this day. All of the riders from that time period in the 90's and 00's - and I mean ALL of them, were using some form of PED. Lemond just didn't get caught. I'm not defending Armstrong, because the way he treated people around him shows what a sack he was, but he was also a convenient example for the UCI to deflect any blame from themselves.

Do your homework on Lemond before accusing. Dude won a Tour, then almost died after being shot in a hunting accident - damaged lungs and lost 65% of blood volume), then came back to win another two tours. And he first went on record about anti-doping in 1989 during the second of three tours he would win.

Jimmy Carter. He recognized the need for The US to become energy independent and put measures into place that would have gotten us there by now. Of course, the first thing Ronnie RayGun did was undo every f*cking one of them. Many of our problems over the last 45 years have stemmed from The Middle East and either directly or indirectly involved oil. I’m obviously simplifying things here, but in the big picture, he was spot on. Even his critics at the time have recently admitted that he was on the correct path. It’s also pretty apparent that Carter was a good man, as evidenced by how he has carried himself over half a lifetime post-presidency.

There were many horrible parts of this whole wretched story. Not the worst, but pretty bad, was how Lindy was absolutely analyzed and her reactions dissected by people who decided that they could tell what she was thinking and feeling by looking at her. "She has a very stoic face, not like a mother who just lost a baby", "Why didn't she cry in the dock, very suspicious" etc etc. I'm seeing the same happen this week with the Amber Heard / Johnny Depp case - going both ways. HOW PEOPLE RESPOND IN PUBLIC TELLS US NOTHING. Some people are naturally stoic. Some are naturally demonstrative. Some people can play a part and what we see is all artifice. Some people are very natural. WE AS ONLOOKERS CANNOT TELL AND WE SHOULD BE LESS ARROGANT AND STOP PRETENDING WE CAN. Just because YOU would react one way doesn't mean everyone will.

She and her husband divorced three years after they were both finally acquitted (and she only spent 7 years in prison, not that that makes it any better really). You make it sound like he divorced her because of the murder conviction. He didn't and had the same story as her for the whole time. No doubt the stress of the case led to their eventual divorce but the death of a child often leads to divorce anyway so there's no way to know what happened.

He was a leading doctor in anaesthesia, and in infection control. The illegal action he took was that he removed the handle from a water pump. It proved he was right. It led to fundamental changes in the waste systems in London, which spread to other cities, then around the world, leading to vast improvements in public health globally. He didn't save a few lives, he saved millions. He sadly wouldn't have known this, as he died 4 years after he stole the pump.

It took three days. Three days from the collection and analysis of the data to the removing of the pump handle. He wasn't messing about.

The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic – and How it Changed Science, Cities and the Modern World, by Steven Johnson, is a pretty good book about how they figured out cholera was caused by contaminated water.

I've read that book, you have to have a strong stomach to get through the descriptions of just how horrible sewage was Not dealt with. Privies so full of muck that it would overflow courtyards, having to cross on bricks and pieces of wood above it, and if you slipped? Children would drown in it.

What's crazy to consider, though, is that ancient civilizations, like Mohenjo-Daro, knew enough to pipe sewage away from their city and water sources, but 19th century London (and many other "modern" civilizations) didn't.

His "illegal" action was to remove the handle to a water pump in Broad Street, London. Other sources of water was the well of a beer factory up the street. The cholera cases dropped to zero in that street after that. There is a wonderful book called "Microbe Hunters", by Paul De Kruif, on that incident.

One of the many things that makes history truly engaging is the people, the historian argued. "Studying [them] makes history far more tangible and enriching than just reeling off a collection of dates and events that happened."

"I think in the world we live in today, history continues to show how important it is as a subject and must continue to encourage those around us to study the subject. The philosopher George Santayana said in 1905 'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.' And that is certainly happening at the moment, with large and powerful countries choosing to forget the true version of the past and use their own version to justify their actions," Moore noted.

"Yes, history is the study of that which is in the past, and some would argue that the past should be left there. But I disagree. I think history and the study of it will continue to have an importance on us as people, and it is not something we should ever abandon," she concluded.

People have been giving away their privacy for free or discounted goods long before the internet rolled around. Magazine subscription cards of the 70's that made you take a little survey, supermarket membership cards that made you sign up by disclosing all your personal info, and then tracks everything you buy, how effective certain sales or "deals" are in your demographic. By the time computers became ubiquitous, no one was paying any attention to the TOS, multiple companies in the 90's/2000's hid "prizes" in the TOS agreement, that everyone should have found, but no one ever did.

The biggest problem with the virtual world today is how easy it is to use it for evil imho. Fake news, bots and other malicious forces has turned much of it into an abyss of anger that is dividing us along multiple fault lines as we speak. A good place to start would be to get rid of online anonymity imho. Some sort of verification system should be put in place based on citizenship or something to that effect. Nothing novel about being accountable for your actions as I see it. We sorta already do this irl. Anger algorithms has got to go as well.

Not going to say she was right, but at the time I remember even as a kid thinking she was crazy, and heard alot of the derisive talk much more common today, directed at her. A lot of Congress members were against it, but were pressured to vote in favor of it by an onslaught of negative press about them being pacifist cowards, not to mention those of their constituents who believed the published surveillance pictures actually showed WMDs and wanted revenge. I was already against the war, not just because we went after the wrong guy (even though Hussein was evil), but also because I saw those photos when they were released. At the time the US invaded the Afghans had conceded that they would allow the US to look for Bin Laden in their sovereign territory, they had previously only said THEY would look for him. Even this final concession was not enough, obviously regime change was the reason. Same with Iraq, the weapons inspectors found nothing because there was nothing to find - still they went ahead knowing that their 'reason' was a pretext and that the world (well, those paying attention) knew it..

50 Historical Figures People Thought Were Nuts At The Time But Were Proven To Be Right Years Later Alexander Fleming, the man who discovered Penicillin, spent almost 10 years trying to convince the medical bodies of his time that it was worth investing time and resources to experiment with it, but was basically told to pound sand despite the respect he had prior to the discovery. Lot of good it did me, I was lucky enough to be born allergic. Happy for the rest of you at least.

Fleming didn't initially really understand the implications of his accidental "discovery". It was Edward Florey and Ernst Chain who actually had the foresight to understand the massive potential- and had the skills to isolate the active ingredient of the penicillium mould, purifying it, figuring out which germs it was effective against, and how to use it.

Valid. However, Rose McGowan had been utilizing a slow burn approach since the early 2000s and was working on taking Weinstein down from within the industry because she knew that's where everyone was aware of his behavior and was covering for him. Courtney Love, on the other hand, risked total professional, personal, and legal obliteration in 2005 by tweeting to the global public that Weinstein is a dangerous predator. She told the entire world in 280 characters. And this list is about people who the world thought was crazy when they were actually right about something.

But didn't the US have preparations in place, and they were then lapsed, ignored or outright reversed? In the UK there was everything needed to ensure a swift response, until it was discovered that the incumbent party had just allowed everything to expire because it was costing too much to replace stuff that was only there in case of an emergency.

At least this person didn't go to the "Amber abused him so he must be innocent himself" conclusion. This doesn't have to be a one good the other bad situation - they can both be abusive AHs. And judging by the testimony so far, it really does seem like that's the case (I mean, their therapist flat out said they were both abusing each other).

Exactly. Finally somebody with common sense. The courts declared both of them to be abusers. Being a victim of abuse does not mean that you cannot be abusive yourself. As much as i like Depp as an actor he was declared guilty

Quite. This is about as current as you can get with an ongoing trial happening right now. Doesn't belong on an 'historical' list or on a list where someone has been 'proven right' as it's not proven at this stage either way, no matter what most of us might personally believe. In fact it has gone against him in a previous case. We need to wait for the verdict here. Then maybe it can be on a list like this.

Depp is essentially suing her because she called herself a domestic abuse survivor in one newspaper editorial (that didn't even name him). But the trial is digging up so much more dirt on both of them, there's no way it's going to redeem his reputation. The testimony just makes her look like a damaged, angry person in a toxic relationship with a raging alcoholic/drug addict. If he thinks that's going to help his future employability in Hollywood, he's delusional. I think he just wants to make sure to take her down with him.

When he gives up the jets, cars, vacation homes, swimming pools, and outfits his home for total solar and wind power, disconnects himself from the grid, and starts riding a true bicycle - not that electric powered s**t, then i'll be a believer.

That's a bit silly and just sounds like making excuses. His documentary was well titled "inconvenient truth". It's getting harder to ignore that reality yet still people make excuses. Imagine if this mentality was used on a sinking ship "hey, the guy whining about the leak isn't single handedly stopping it, well then I'm not a believer!"

Al Gore was Bill Clinton's vice president and ran against George W. Bush in the 2004 presidential election. He was also one of the most prominent and vocally urgent early advocates for moving toward green energy and technology in the mid-2000s. He warned and warned about climate change and its permanent impact. Gore released a documentary called An Inconvenient Truth in 2006 that details the current and future implications of climate change. It won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

I still remember the tv news with their simulation about the atmosphere and the hole in the ozon layer. All the australians had to cover their skin because of avoiding getting skin cancer. So many people had to wear many cloth on their body for a certain time. The industry created hilarious products that where filled in bottles with pumping system ... sticky and less effective. Thank god they found Butan. Thank god the hole is closed by now ... we where able to watch the succes by changing our behaviour ...

The industries produce products that make life worse, not better. The fact that their product was in a delivery system that also harmed clean air and the atmosphere was a bonus for them. When you see their true goals, you know they knew better all along and actually set out to induce the problem to start with. And now they want you to pay more in taxes because of the climate they are trying hard to ruin. Shut them down, problem solved.

Personally, I would legalise going medieval on the CEOs when they knowingly lie, omit and destroy lives and our world. No excuses. Quarter a CEO here and there and I am certain, industry would fall in line.

I was ridiculed at work in the end of February 2020, when I suggested the company start putting protocols in place in case COVID became as widespread in the US as it had elsewhere. Things like work from home, masks, gloves, etc. The owners of the company were MAGAts with money (dangerous combo), and believed it wasn’t anything to worry about. Two weeks later, the country was going into lockdown, and the assholes I worked for suddenly had to scramble to allow us to work from home—-even their f*****g files were just paper, and had never ever been scanned and put online, so you can imagine they had nothing in place for remote work. Then they said we still had to go into the office to collect payments and run the deposits to the bank. That’s where I was exposed to someone who an hour later was notified she’d tested positive for the virus. The assholes wouldn’t let me quarantine for two weeks (those f*****g deposits, you know!), so I was forced to resign so I wouldn’t potentially infect others.

Not quite as far ahead but I had multiple people call me a massive pessimist when I was like "Yeah, I don't think this is going to be just a few weeks." And in the summer of 2020 when my former colleagues who are still teaching were talking about plans for the school year, I was adamant things wouldn't get better while they were thinking there was a good chance. By then I was saying "Any plan predicated on the majority of Americans doing the right thing is going to fail, period. At least 50% of us are selfish morons - if your plans aren't built on that, they're wrong and bad." At that point, I didn't think I was remotely going out on a limb.

She was in her late teens / early 20s and he was MUCH older, so there was a distinct power imbalance that he took advantage of. It's time to stop assigning all the blame to the women in these situations. In fact, we all need to mind our own business and let people live their lives, make mistakes, learn from them, and grow,.

Corey Feldman was/is always more outspoken about the systematic about of his best friend Corey Haim. He did everything he possibly could to bring awareness to the situation and was made fun of, called a liar, and was no longer being cast in movies or TV shows, even though him and the other Corey were wildly popular at the time. It was very sad to see what became of Corey Haim. Corey Feldman still says to this day that Charlie Sheen is the first predator to prey on Corey Haim during the filming of the movie "Lucas" .when he was fairly young.

50 Historical Figures People Thought Were Nuts At The Time But Were Proven To Be Right Years Later John Rae. Very skilled arctic explorer who unlike most of the rest of Europeans at the time wasn’t above learning from the Inuit. He was largely successful because of his willingness to learn from them and use their clothing and diet and techniques. Anyway, about ten years after the Franklin Expedition was lost John Rae was out looking for clues what happened because the British Admiralty had a standing reward of £10,000 for anyone who had credible information about the expeditions fate. He found some physical remnants of the expedition and had met with Inuit who’d seen some of the last surviving members of the expedition. They related to him how they’d been taken by disease, lack of food, and how some of them finally succumbed to cannibalism. Rae took this information back to England, where society was absolutely outraged how he dared to spin such drivel. Surely no sophisticated gentlemen of the hero’s character that would be in Sir John Franklin’s expedition would act so savagely! John Rae never got the award. Years later someone else did who told of a story that was correct also to some degree, but less than Rae had been. In modern times bone fragments have been found with telltale cut marks, thereby proving John Rae and the Inuit right.

I saw this apparently as It said the British aristocrats could not believe that someone they respected so much could possibly resort to cannibalism to try to save their own lives so the story was widely trashed as a fake. Crap to not believe the Inuits when that's their home and they'd obviously know better.

Then again, had Franklin and his entire crew been born and bred East End Cockneys, the aristocrats would’ve wholeheartedly believed them capable of such things. Amazing how a little cash and a title can adversely color someone’s perceptions of civilized behavior in those less fortunate than them. Especially when you consider all the lowdown, nasty, criminal, illegal, immoral, and downright sick s**t that members of the upper crust did, in business, in their homes, and around the world—-with impunity.

Learning from the natives was also why Amundsen's expedition got back from the South Pole and Scott and his men died one after one. Wool and ponnies was not the way to go. Scott had tried skiing once for a couple of hours in Norway and didn't like it.... Amundsen had learned dog sledging in Greenland, wore reindeer skins like the Sami, and they all were experienced skiers. And on the way back some of the dogs were used to feed the others....

It's bizarre how so few people seem to understand how much tragic curcumstances can change a person, sometimes people are pushed to their limit, so they can only do something drastic, and are treated as monsters afterwards. That's why I'm often looking at both sides of the situation, to see if people failed to understand that the problematic person usually is tge result of other problems, and such a victim themselves as well. Sadly that's often misunderstood as siding with the problem person, but still

Technically speaking, he hadn't proved his point yet and phrased his book in a very inflamatory way. He wasn't punished for his position about heliocentrism (and most certainly not for saying the Earth was round - it was already known that the Earth was round and a lot of people were debating about heliocentrism as a possibility). He was mostly punished for lying that he had proved it already and for publicly bad-mouthing his sponsors in the worst possible moment (during the Counter-reform). He was less of a hero of truth and more of an arrogant researcher that had an insight but published his ideas before actually proving them.

Fun fact: he was actually definitely wrong. He kept circular orbits, so the math of course wasn’t adding up. And yet he still tried to bully people into his way when there were other models that were more mathematically valid (also wrong, but more accurate). Keplers the one who finally realized there’s no reason the orbits would have to be circles & got the math right.

Not to victim-blame, but to play devil's advocate, She was in her 20s and knew he was married. It's not like there was a question of that. He was a president of the US and an extremely public figure. I don't feel THAT badly for her. That being said, it was a ridiculous overreaction that went on for years and she definitely didn't deserve the years of being made fun of. She was stupid and made a bad decision but we all do stupid things sometimes and we don't pay for it the way she did. There was also a huge disparity in how she was treated vs how Clinton was treated. The women in the equation were treated way more harshly. Hillary was made fun of for both staying with him and as if it were her fault he strayed. Meanwhile Bill was, for the most part, treated like a womanizer or a 'player'. To this day Hillary still gets s**t about it. Monica basically had to go into hiding. It was so crazy.

Bill Clinton knew he was married too. The blame and betrayal is his cross to bear, not the young intern. The spin was calling her a golddigger, instead of the reality: he was a cheating husband going for a young person under his guidance/employment.

Agreed. I get it about the power dynamic and age gap...but folks are making it seem as if this were a 13 year old girl...not a 23 year old woman out of university. I am sorry, but at twenty-freaking-three years old, I was FULLY aware of the stigma of sleeping with another woman's husband. I did some really dumb things in my twenties, but never would have slept with a man and KNOW he was married. President or not. BOTH deserve blame. I am sick of folks infantilizing her. She was NOT A CHILD. By the time my mom was 24, she was out of college, working full time as a teacher with a child, husband, mortgage and an entire adult life. Shame on BOTH of them, I don't care who downvotes, this was not a one way street. She didn't deserve the utter rage thrown at her, but she is NOT blameless.

I have a problem with the fact that she flashed the President with her thong sides. Yes she was young and was trashed horribly in the media and by everyday people. She didn't deserve that. The fact is she pursued a married man. That's what I have a problem with.

There's a new guy that's being treated similarly on the same subject. About 3 weeks before the Hunga Tonga Hunga Longword volcano/ earthquake happened, he forecasted that it would happen. And that's not the first time. Hes correctly forecasted many earthquakes. (Forecast and prediction are not synonymous, which his detractors keep using the word predict, not forecast.) I dont agree with his conservative ideologies but his earthquake forecasting is pretty darn accurate and the USGS bends over backwards to bad mouth him. His youtube channel is called dutchsinse. He explains his forecast process clearly so even a know-nothing like myself can understand. And the USGS *hates* him for it. They've had his videos pulled repeatedly. His process has very much to do with plate tectonics.

Bernie Sanders. That dude complains a lot and he may not be right every time but it sure seems like most of the time. Ralph Nader wasn't taken seriously about automobile safety. Now we have seatbelts and laws mandating them.

The fact that we’re fed a narrative that oversight and regulation only exist in polarized extremes & are an affront to liberty & freedom is one of the largest disservices ever. Nader was seen as an extremist, liberal cook simply for his work on establishing consumer protections. Imagine if it were “buyer beware” policy when it came to all our goods and services.

It's a trap. Don't let them do it. Don't follow the US on this one, we clearly f***ed up. We're stuck with a two party system because any other parties can't get the votes, and the two parties we have just keep getting more and more extreme, and no one is actually representing the common person. Yes I know democrats and republicans, but everyone I know is a lot closer to center and each other than they are to any of the politicians supposedly representing them.

I can’t get on the Bernie Wagon because his approach seems to always be “the ends justify the means”. He has great ideas, in theory, but to implement them things will get worse before they get better. And the cycle of American politics is short term- not long. We would need 10 years of solid democratic control to implement his ideas and that’s just not going to happen. At least not without a civil war.

Contemporaries believed Hitler's rise was because of the punitive reparations demanded of Germany, but actually at the time the Nazi's shut down Parliament and took control, most Ally nations had already greatly reduced their demands for reparations. There may have been deeper and darker social zeitgeist going on that kept the winds in the sails of Aryan supremacy.

Duff Roblin, the Premier of Manitoba. After the 1950 flood, Roblin's government initiated the Red River Floodway project. The floodway diverts part of the river around the city. At the time he was mocked and a lot of people thought it was a waste of money, because "a flood like that will never happen again." It's been estimated that it's saved $40 billion CAD in flood damages since it was completed in 1968. I was there for the '97 flood. The floodway saved my home and my in-laws' home.

OH Damn! LOL You beat me to it. I didn't think anyone was going to mention "Duffy's Ditch". Yes, there was a great flood but I heard it would have flooded the downtown and much of the communities if it wasn't for the floodway. Me and my folks were volunteering with filling sandbags and we even sandbagged at a property. There's coloured bands on one of the support beams of one of the bridges showing the peak water levels comparing the 1950's flood and the '97 flood, as well as tiles on the beams of the rotunda at The Forks. It's quite interesting and scary.

The English physician, William Harvey (A.D.1578–1657), discovered the circulation of blood. The current opinion in those days was that blood oscillates in the vessels of the body. For his views, Harvey was ridiculed and was called “circulator”. He lost most of his patients. However, before he died, Harvey’s idea about circulation was generally accepted as a biological fact.

The circulation of the blood was discovered in the 13th century by the Arabic Scholar Ibn Al-Nafis. This was ignored by western scholars, who atribute the discovery of blood circulation to William Harvey, even though Al-Nafis had worked it out 600 years before.

In 5th grade (i think), the class did a stupid 'scientific' experiment where some students were blind folded and fed either a bite of apple or a bite of onion. The concept being that if you're blindfolded and told it's an apple then that's you will taste apple. I was blindfolded. I love apples. I hate, I mean absolutely loathe, onions. Guess who almost barfed as soon as the onion touched her tongue? Nasty yucky gross blech. 30+ years later and I still hate onions. Still not sure what tf the point of the experiment was, because how can one not tell the difference? I shudder just thinking about that nasty onion on my tongue.

Jack Layton -Early on in the Afghanistan war when the Taliban had been largely beaten and splintered into several small groups, many of them leaderless and wanting a way out, Jack suggested negotiating with these groups to end the war. The Conservative government of Canada labeled him Taliban Jack, and he was widely ridiculed. Had they negotiated back in 2005/2006 there would have been a lot less lives lost, and an opportunity to create a lasting change in Afghanistan.

Unfortunately, as with the US in Vietnam, the goals of the war (ie: what constitutes "victory") were ambiguous with no clear exit strategy from the beginning. At least with Desert Storm, most of the objectives were clearly defined with an exit strategy in place (you can't really have the latter without the former)

50 Historical Figures People Thought Were Nuts At The Time But Were Proven To Be Right Years Later Chris Crocker. We all know the Leave Brittney Alone video. We all quoted it at the same and made fun of Chris. But they turned out to be completely correct. Britney was being pushed too hard by the media, and the aggressive fans and invasive paparazzi were (in part) to blame for her break down. We know now that she was controlled by her family for years, and we really shouldnt have mocked someone trying to draw attention to it. I think part of the mockery came because the breakdown is "funny", but also because society did - and still does - think that celebrities deserve whatever happens to them, so the paparazzi and the fans aren't responsible for how their actions hurt celebrities.

At the time it was well known that Britney was being hounded by the paparazzi, and the pressure the constant attention on celebrities was having (for example, watch the episode south park did about her). The mockery came from crying and screaming about a celebrity online

The way that idiot did it was over the top. BUT Craig Ferguson was ahead of it more than others. While late night comedians were making fun of her HE said he would NOT make fun of her as she was having a mental breakdown which my family and I had been saying all along. I remember getting angry at the people who made fun of her as it was obvious she was falling apart mentally and emotionally..

I believe it was the equally incomparable Dionne Warwick who said in awe that Karen's voice was so full and rich that you could see it. Some Carpenters songs still give me chills because Karen had such passion in that voice. Think what we've been denied in losing decades more of her making music, like Tony Bennett singing so late so wonderfully in life

Karen's life and story are completely heartbreaking. She unfortunately married a total d**k. Said he didn't know who she was...part of the attraction, I presume. Then he tried to bully her into a large investment. She was strong and smart enough to see him for the gold digger that he was and divorced him. I just wish she was that strong for herself. I am still heartbroken. I'd love to have heard more of that beautiful voice

The Tanis site. They found ejecta spherules (think rock BBs) lodged in the gills of numerous fish fossils. That's only possible if the animal was still alive and struggling to breathe, forcing the ejecta spherules deep into the gill tissues. What's crazier still is they figured out that it must have been a beautiful day in mid-to-late spring in the northern hemisphere when their world ended!

Another b******t narrative. From the beginning, the impact theory had the support of many highly respectable and influential scientists. Until people were able to prove that the Chicxulub crater was indeed an impact site and that the impact coincided with the mass extinction event during which killed off all non-avian dinosaurs it was considered to be one more hypothesis for the mass extinction. It was better than most, but still did not have enough proof. Their were very good competing theories, like the Deccan Traps theory.

Marie Curie Discovered polonium and radium and was laughed at for suggesting that radiation could be used to view the human body in ways we couldn't see. It's because of her that we have x-rays. It's also because of her that we learned that unchecked radiation could also cause cancer. 111 Barry Marshall Helped discover h. Pylori bacteria and the link between it and ulcers. He and his research partner Robin Warren were knocked by the medical community for their beliefs in those link. Marshall drank a cocktail containing h.pylori, willingly gave himself bacterial induced gastritis, then used antibiotics to cure himself just to prove he was right.

*sigh* Marie Curie was avarded with Nobel prize of physics only 5 years after she found Polonium and Radium. And no. It was not due her that we have X-rays. First X-ray photo thru human tissues were taken by Wilhem Röntgen at 1895. Marie Skodolwskaja-Curie newertheless contributed a lot on developing mobile X-ray units but due the urgent need of field hospitals of WW-I no one definetly laughed..

Mme. Curie may not have taken the first xray, but she did identify the fact that exposing photographic film to radiation had the same effect as exposing it to light. Scientific advancement is rarely a one-person show.

Edward Jenner, noted how milkmaids were less likely to develop smallpox, since they routinely contracted cowpox. He developed "variolation" (early type of vaccination), used it on condemned prisoners (who then had their sentences reduced from execution) to prove it's worth. Personally, wouldn't mind condemned prisoners being offered this, no execution, but life without parole.

Prisoners in the US, condemned or not, are considered to not be able to freely consent to a dangerous procedure in exchange for release. It is not really a choice. And because they are not able to avoid consequences for declining (due to confinement), they also cannot freely consent to sexual activity with a other person.

Marie Curie was a victim of a smear campaign right before receiving her second Nobel prize. She was dating a man who was still married and people were protesting in front of her house. The Nobel comittee even asked her not to receive the award in person because of the bad publicity. She answered since the award was for her scientific work, her private life should not matter. She still went to the ceremony.

He helped evacuate 96 Olympics after noticing a suspiciously unattended back pack. He saved lives by getting people out before the incendiary in the pack went off. He was then treated as the main suspect. The FBI were conniving snakes and tried to convince him he was participating in a bomb safety video in order to circumvent his rights. He was seen as a sterling example of law enforcement overreach for a long while. Happy ending though, as he and his wife were able to live on a farm until his passing. And he left a rose at centennial park every year on the anniversary of the bombing for the one spectator Alice Hawthorne who died. Man was a hero and had to deal with people ridiculing him and suspecting he bombed the Olympics because the FBI were a bunch of morons.

Yeah, sadly not the first time the FBI have gone out of their way entrap someone. The one that gets me is the group that were agitating for change (I can't remember what the specific issue was) but the FBI had someone (undercover/CI) convince them to get a rocket launcher, even though they had no use for one, but had to go interstate to get it thus making it a federal matter. I'm not saying these guys were angels (nor particularly bright) but there's no way they would've tried to acquire a rocket launcher had they not been essentially lead down that path

Gregor Mendel. In the 1860s, he came up with the Principles of Segregation and Independent Assortment, saying that genetic factors are expressed via segregating alleles and different genes. For about a good 40-ish years, everyone thought he was crazy and didn't receive much credibility from his peers. However, in the early 1900s, people began to build off of his knowledge and work. Now, he's known as the father of genetics.

Science is a weird stick for attack. Scientists are all about utter precision and as such discoveries are much researched by other scientists, before they even begin to test the discovery. It is normal for a scientific especially medical, discovery, or new idea, to undergo years of peer led research before even the most basic clinical trials begin. And then it has to be funded, peer reviewed again and again. Most scientists allow creeping gains are the best gains. It's all behind the scenes with scientists. Fiercely protective of their work, only publish to the public if they are certain they are correct. And that's why it is a lifetimes work. It can take 25 years to thrash out a specific idea as a fact commonly agreed.

Yes, Mendels insight was really important, but he wasn't ridiculed. However, he did make one mistake (if you can call it that) in that his data was a smidgeon -too- clean. In order to clearly present his (absolutely correct!) ideas he "beautified" his numbers so that they were a lot closer to his theories than they should have been. But I think he can be forgiven :-)

I'm friends through work with a sign painter that used to pitch for the Padres back in the 90's. I asked him about it one day and his first hand accounts of the drugs used daily by all teams for the years he was participating was a real eye opener... and they reach far beyond roids.

During his testimony on March 17, 2005, McGwire declined to answer questions under oath when he appeared before the House Government Reform Committee. In a tearful opening statement, McGwire said:

Certainly agree about architecture. Buildings made of stone and even brick have survived for centuries and are aesthetically pleasing. Today, they actually put a shelf life on buildings. Like, it will last twenty years or so. And they are SO ugly. All this metal and glass is horrendous.

Prince Charles is a massive hypocrite that’s the issue people have. It’s ok for him to bang on about the environment but when he’s flying around the world in expensive jets or commissioning the royal train for short journeys his message gets lost.

I agree that the royalty definitely takes up more resources than others. But the British royals almost exclusively fly commercial, so they’re not really worse than anyone else who travels by air (myself included) in that regard. I also read about how when William and Harry were kids they thought it was normal to go on a walk and pick up trash because that’s what they did with their father. I think that’s a pretty good example of him not just telling others to be more environmentally aware but legitimately trying to do so himself. I’m not saying he’s some environmental warrior, but how many people do you know go out and just pick up random litter?

After Prince Phillip died I read that many European countries comment on how the wealthy, right-leaning, high status people in the UK are onboard with the idea of tackling environmental problems in a way they aren't in other countries, and that this can be put down to his long running interest in conservation. I am sure Prince Charles can be put into this category too. Not saying these people are saints, the damage done just by managing land for grouse shoots is disgraceful, but they broadly accept that humans are messing up the environment and something needs to be done about it.

My thoughts exactly. The scientist-nazis had some great ahead of their time findings, like cigarettes causing lung cancer, but we dont look up to them for that because they were horrible people. Prince Charles is a horrible person, so the fact that he was an environmentalist means little to me. Doing something good doesn't negate being a piece of s**t person.

J Harlen Bretz. He spent his life's work proving that the channeled scablands were formed by an absolutely biblical level flood. No one took him seriously because by that point geologists weren't really too keen on the biblical events type geology and were more in favor of gradual change hypothesis for how things came to be. As soon as satellite photography became a thing his hypothesis was pretty quickly accepted because it's really obvious from above that its massive flood tracts. Funny enough even the famous explorers Lewis and Clark realized it was caused by floods and even wrote about it because they recognized the rippling hills and flood deposits like you'd see in a river just hundreds of times bigger. If your interested google Missoula floods.

I don't know the guy's name who figured this out, but there have been similar explanations about Grand Canyon as well as the areas near the canyon, like the hills you can see in the distance from the Grand Canyon. I dont know enough about earth science to weigh in one way or the other, but living in the remains of the Missoula flood and the basalt flow it seems to make sense. Also found out that back when Willamette Valley was filled with water its referred to as 'Lake Allison'.

I watched a great documentary about this. At the time most of geology was stuck in the "hundreds of thousands of years" mindset, and how it just was not physically possible to have such an epic flood, let alone for it to happen multiple times?? But glaciers are incredible, and "biblical" or epic sized floods happened again and again.

Chelsey ”Sully” Sullenberger - the pilot of US Airways flight 1549 that landed his plane in the Hudson river. Damn, he was mangled before finally being aquitted of the charges and told he did a great job and the made all the right decisions.

I have a feeling this person watched the movie Sully and nothing else because their recollection is so ridiculously off. Landing a plane into the Hudson without breaking it apart was seen as an impressive feat and Sully was well known in the aviation community already having been a part of several highly focused NTSB investigations so he knew how the process would go. When people found out he was the pilot, they agreed he's the one they'd want in that situation and were not shocked by his calm demeanor or ability. There was of course an NTSB investigation but there always is, they were curious if he could have gotten to another airport (LaGuardia was in reach, but didn't take into several factors and they agreed ditching was the best hope and saved countless), and was not some sort of police interrogation with bright lights. Tom Hanks noted that Sully wasn't a fan of how the movie portrayed the NTSB making sure real names were not used. Another example to give you how celebrated he was? The Hudson landing happened on January 15 and the dude was at the Presidential inauguration for Obama on January 20, hardly being lambasted.

There is an episode of Mayday (Air Crash Investigation) that goes into a less dramatic telling of the events and the investigation that followed. Yes, they did look to see if they could have made it to LaGuardia, they had to for insurance reasons. The plane was a total write off. The insurance company was of course looking for someone to blame and pilots are some times at fault for air crashes. But they found that with the time added for decision making that they could not have made any airport and were cleared.

Investigations into plane crashes take a very long time and the crew cannot be declared cleared of any wrongdoing until it has been completed. It does not necessarily mean that the investigators assume the crew were to blame.

He was also one of the first managers (certainly in England) to introduce a lifestyle approach to performance, particularly diet- no more mars bars, chocolates or alcohol in the lead up to games, no smoking and he had a knack for spotting young talent who could be bought for the proverbial song & dance. Not sure how much of the decline of the club was him getting stuck in his ways/failing to evolve and how much were financial limitations associated with the move to the new stadium- there were a few years where there were transfers out of talented players but little coming back in

No judgment of her choices but imagine what she might've been capable of doing had her life been different (thinking along the lines of George Best) although from listening to some of her music, the difficulties she endured certainly seem to have provided inspiration for her music/lyrics. EXACTLY! They were a pretty popular country music group in the US whose lead singer had the temerity to publicly disagree with then president George W Bush. The country folks scorched the group and they practically disappeared. She received death threats for voicing an opinion. And yet, these same knuckle dragging mouth breathers storm the capital because "their" player didn't get re-elected.

Umm, that whole deal with dissing 'Murican policy from a foreign nation and getting cancelled was just a publicity stunt. They were never that good anyway, and their name is pretty much top level racist. I mean when you put "Dixie" in a name, what kind of audience do you KNOW they are going to attract? Leftovers, has beens, 15 minutes of fame is over, move on.

Can’t remember his name, but he predicted the 2008 housing crash. Was laughed at on tv shows as he described the events that would happen based on then current loan practices taking place.

I was suspicious of those lending practices too. Let's buy a nice house then pay some ridiculously high balloon payment later. Sure, that money will just magically appear, not!

I'm not sure if I'm remembering this correctly as it was so long ago... But when the iPad was first launched by Steve Jobs, there was a lot of derision by the public and media. I remember friends making fun of it, and there were memes comparing it to a sanitary pad, saying it's just a giant phone, there are already kindles etc, and that nobody would buy such things. Nowadays it has become so normal, and some schools even give out iPads to students.

The iPad was a blessing during the lockdown for my kids education. It is the only resource they needed to attend school, get assignments, submit them, stay in touch with friends and occasionally, yes, play video games or watch a little tv. No resource is good or bad, it’s the way it is used.

Granted, I *still* think a tablet is basically a giant phone (considering how advanced phones are these days). There are a *few* reasons I might want a screen that big (notably for myself, rhythm games), but they're pretty few in number and I can't imagine spending that much on a tablet just for a few rhythm games that I *could* still at on my smaller phone.

Apple was smart instituting MacIntosh OS, as most folks prefer the system the start with; guaranteed a lot of future sales. Bill Gates couldn't do it because MicroSoft wasn't an exclusive producer of MS OS devices.

I can still recall old Mister Barnslow getting out every morning and nailing a fresh load of tadpoles to the old board of his. Then he'd spin it round and round, like a wheel of fortune, and no matter where it stopped he'd yell out, "Tadpoles! Tadpoles is a winner!" We all thought he was crazy. But then we had some growing up to do. -Jack Handey

Graham hancock, his theories in the 90's about mega structures being much older than 6000 years was mocked up until 2018 Gobekli Tepe was discovered and proven him right, now they are reassessing all of earths ancient mega structures, Angkor wat was said to be 900 years old but you can add a zero onto that now. Randal Carlson is another, with the Younger Dryas impact now proven, his theories are also correct and both these men spent their lives being laughed at by scientists and their work called pseudo science but now they are considered pioneers in their field and both are getting Netflix specials highlighting their contributions.

This is complete bollocks. Gobekli Tepe was discovered in 1963, not 2018. Hancock was 13 when excavations began. Hancock has not been "proven right" about anything - none of his work holds up to review, he doesn't publish in any credible journal because he's unwilling to submit his work to peer review. No, there isn't a reputable historian that thinks Angkor Wat is 9,000 years old - it absolutely was constructed with metal tools, not stone (9k would be neolithic). FFS, the bas reliefs depict kings we can definitively date. The people you mention are 100% not considered "pioneers" in anything - they're still very much mocked and dismissed because none of their work holds up to scrutiny and their evidence is s**t.

This post is nonsense. The presence of neolithic sites such as Gobekli have been known about, and continuously studied by REAL archaeologists since the 1960s. People like Graham Hancock are just conspiracy theorists.

Please do not spend false information, Angkor Wat is around 900 years old, not ten times older.
