More Public Figures React To Barbie Snubs, But Still No Love For Lily Gladstone
Former US Secretary and First Lady Hillary Clinton responded to the Academy Awards snubbing the Barbie movie, sparking conversations regarding diversity and the lack of support for Lily Gladstone.
Just as the 96th Academy Awards announced its nominations on Tuesday (January 23), the highest-grossing film of 2023, Barbie was infamously snubbed.
Although the hit movie did end up getting eight nods, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, and Best Supporting Actress for America Ferrera, some argued that Barbie suffered the biggest snubs of this year’s nominations, as its director Greta Gerwig was not nominated for Best Director and its protagonist, Margot Robbie, was not nominated for Best Actress.

People couldn’t help but point to the irony upon noticing that Barbie’s male actor was nominated, but its female director and the main character weren’t, seeing as the movie’s entire plot revolved around the negative impacts of patriarchy and sexism.
In a statement, Ryan Gosling, who played Ken, responded to the snub and wrote: “But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film.”
The Oscar controversy sparked further outrage, as even Hillary Clinton expressed her disapproval. Taking to her X page (formerly known as Twitter) on Wednesday (January 24), she wrote: “Greta & Margot, While it can sting to win the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you.”

She signed off the post, which has been viewed 33.8 million times, writing: “You’re both so much more than Kenough. #HillaryBarbie.”
Other celebrities who responded to the Oscar snub included John Cena, who briefly appeared in the movie as Merman Ken alongside Dua Lipa, who played Mermaid Barbie.
Speaking to People on Wednesday while at the premiere of his upcoming film Argylle, the 46-year-old actor said: “I can let my friend Margot and I can certainly let Greta know that awards aren’t the only metric to success, and they have made a movie that has done tremendous business and changed a lot of lives in the process.
“And I think that’s one hell of an achievement.”

Michelle Yeoh also weighed in on Barbie’s surprising snubs, as she told Today on Wednesday: “The only take is like, it’s so competitive out there, and there is no guarantee because you’re not the only voter, you know? It’s widespread.
“Thank God the movie got nominated for Best Picture. But you do think, ’How do you get nominated for Best Picture but not Best Director and not Best Actress?’”
Amidst all the Barbie disappointment, many seem to have forgotten one positive bit of Oscar news: the fact that the very first Native American woman has been nominated for the Best Actress category at the Academy Awards.

Lily Gladstone portrayed Mollie Kyle in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. In the film, which is based on a true story, Lily falls in love with Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Ernest Burkhart, and the two become suspicious of the murders of Osage Nation members who became wealthy after striking oil.
Other Indigenous actresses have been nominated before, but as a member of the Blackfeet Nation, Lily is the first Native American nominated. She lived on reservations until she was 11 years old, as per CBS News.
“It’s undoubtedly a phenomenal year for diversity, so why are we focusing our concern on the fact that two cis white women, who carry an enormous amount of privilege as is, aren’t nominated for an award?” Refinery29 writer Alexandra Koster questioned.

Alexandra further stated: “When a white woman isn’t nominated, people lose it. But when people of color defy the odds, they’re ambivalent.” The writer then asked: “Where is the celebration for the first Native American woman to be nominated?”
Mashable echoed Alexandra’s sentiment, as it highlighted how people’s outrage for the Barbie snubs “distracted from Lily Gladstone’s historic Best Actress nomination” as well as from “Justine Triet’s place on the Best Director list for Anatomy of a Fall and the lack of spots for women of color.”

The publication also highlighted America Ferrera’s Academy Awards recognition, as it stated: “To be upset at a single woman’s dismissal in the grand scheme of things, within a race packed with history-making nominations and a year of great women-led films, is plain weird.
“It’s also doing a disservice to Ferrera, who received her first Oscar nomination (adding to the small 1.7 percent of Hispanic and Latino nominees) over a long career defined by telling women’s stories.”
“Thank you for supporting women,” a person praised Hillary Clinton
Sorry, but who really cares for the Oscars anymore? Interest and viewerships are constantly going down year after year since a while.
I didn't see the movie, so tell me the honest truth: was acting like a plastic toy really any vehicle for Margot Robbie to show off her acting talent? Robert Downey Jr is one of the most talented actors, but is anyone angry he didn't get a nomination for Iron Man? No MCU movie has EVER won an Academy Award, except a couple techie awards for Black Panther. It's not wierd Robbie didn't get a nom, it's wierd Freddie Prinz did.
the movie Is Fun And I have really enjoyed it, but it is not Oscar material. Margot is great but same as the real doll, she has bimbo face for the whole movie.
Load More Replies..."But what about MCU?!" Has nothing to do with this. You'd don't even see the movie.
If you didn't see the movie, then you have no ideas what it was about - the symbolism, etc. When conforming to societal expectations of femininity and womanhood, Barbie became plastic - not herself, just like many women have to do to survive in a hard male-dominated world. The doll Barbie is held up as a standard look and life of women when in fact is an image impossible to live up to - the body is literally impossible to achieve. When Barbie could be her true self, she was human like and no longer plastic. This movie really was "deep" in a fun and entertaining way. Go see the movie with this lens and then discuss it with women who also have seen the movie to get their perspective. The movie could be the catalyst for conversations among and between the genders.
What does any of that have to do with whether Margot deserved to win an oscar for it?
The movie wasn't that deep, it just explained what some women go through. Switch the genders and feminists would be up in arms at the thought that a popular movie has a character of one gender who had the audacity to want to be special, that they went about it a stupid way (because it's a comedy) and that luckily the original ruling gender got their places back because the upstarts are so dumb they didn't realise they were being played. And don't forget there's one of the opposite gender allowed in the main character's group because they don't conform to the gender stereotypes and are thus considered acceptable, because Lord knows you can't be friends with anyone who's different from you.
so people throw a hissy fit because somebody didn't get an award. That's my take on this.
I don’t get this, maybe they were next best? Like if five people were nominated she was number six? Pretty sure sports performers and anyone in any sort of contest goes through this all the time. It’s not that you were snubbed, it’s that you weren’t any better than the five people that were nominated. I’m glad it’s finally put out there how much it takes away from the people that were nominated with stupid articles like this that have been all over the news.
I really like Margot Robbie but WILD HORSES couldn't drag me to see "Barbie" 🙄
Meh, your loss. I’ve hated barbies since I was little, and I’m not fond of either Margot Robbie or Ryan Gosling, but found the movie surprisingly enjoyable.
In my opinion it is a very mediocre movie. Nobody would even talk about it if it was not about Barbie. Does it have to get awards just because it supports gender equality? I call that bs. Do not get me wrong, if someone likes the movie, I do not give a damn. But forcing it to other ppl IS a big problem and I feel sorry for those who do not realise it
Its not a zero sum game. You can have more than one winner or loser in a situation. Its awesome that group A is finally getting inclusion but it also sucks that group B didn't get their recognition. There should never be the choice that only one group can succeed. All groups should succeed (except Nazis, mass murderers, and zombies).
Barbie is simply a popular movie, and that's why Margot Robbie got attention that Lily Gladstone didn't. The Oscars are not supposed to be a popularity contest, though. Also, the fuss isn't just that Margot Robbie wasn't nominated, it's that Ryan Gosling was nominated and she wasn't.
Which just means there were 5 more Oscar-worthy female performances than Margot's, and 4 more Oscar-worthy performances than Ryan's.
Um. Who cares? Do people really watch the Oscars anymore? If so, why? It's a BS popularity contest for the elites the have nothing but contempt for you.
The entitlement is strong in the Barbie cast and crew. This is perfectly normal for so many years and so many movies that have all been better than Barbie. That movie was a fun little flick, but if the other movies that year hadn't been so utterly garbage, it wouldn't have been that successful. It's a fact that it's a good movie, but not a great movie. It had its weaknesses. It's not as important as those people think it is. The fact that a movie like Barbie was even nominated tells a lot about how bad the whole Hollywood scene has declined.
My take is that Margot could've at least been nominated, and Greta Gerwig should've been, but Lily Gladstone deserves to win
TBA I saw the film after reading all the reviews and didn´t really see the hype.
But this is the first time I've heard of the flower moon, and barbie was every where for a year.
"Killers of the Paper Moon" is based on the book of the same name - both are actually VERY good and the acting is great. It and the actors actually deserved their nominations. There were many good actors, male and female, in many movies. The irony of Greta Gerwig and Margo Robbie not being nominated but Ryan Gosling being nominated is that the movie is about a man discovering patriarchy in the "real world" as apposed to the Barbie world. Go see both movies.
