Even though we’re already almost three months into the new year, it’s not too late to look back at some of the memes we loved in 2023.
Jessica Maddox, assistant professor of digital media, recapped the last twelve months online by saying that memes seemed to be the main way people dealt with, reacted to, and processed the news, whereas senior writer Thomas Germain from Gizmodo (a media outlet) claimed that “judging by what we saw in 2023, it’s clear that the golden age of memes is over.”
To settle this, Bored Panda reached out to viral marketing strategist and CEO of Viral Marketing Stars, Katya Varbanova, who believes that memes in 2023 were brilliant, especially the ones about women’s empowerment.
“A lot of the memes in 2023 had to do with female empowerment, so is it possible that those who claim it was weak may simply be uncomfortable with seeing female-focused trends dominating their screens? Examples: the Barbie movie memes, Girl Dinner, Girl Math, and Tube Girl. I don't think it was weak. I think it was iconic.”

Actually, what the photo shows is a service dog that is working... by bringing comfort and confidence which is part of their job. I know y'all may not like that a dog has a job, and you may down vote my post because of it, but service dogs deserve respect. I love that no one is trying to distract the dog doing his/her job.

Actually, what the photo shows is a SEARCH DOG (as printed on the left one's vest), and the scene appears to be a transportation terminal (probably an airport), and the human is clearly an armed official, such as police or military. So I'm not sure where the pointy "y'all may not like that a dog has a job" popped out, but lordy, you must not read this site. It's pretty much entirely occupied by supporters of good bois everywhere. So no need to remind us to respect service animals, we're way ahead of you there. .

We also got in touch with meme researcher from Syracuse University (a private research university in New York), Alexander Smith, who agreed that last year was relatively good for humorous trends.
"I would not say 2023 was a "weak" year. From 2020 to 2022, memes expressed a lot of humorous nihilism, gallows humor, and helplessness that struck a chord with everyone following the pandemic.
2023 memes were an about-face from that mentality and a desire for personal stability and for things to make sense again. We also saw memes that referenced celebrity caricature humor like Josh Hutcherson and Kevin James, mashups like Barbenheimer, and a lot of references to memes that took on an aesthetic not entirely different from Flash illustrations during the 2000s. "
Furthermore, Smith reminds us that Cheems passed away in 2023, which had a big cultural impact with its Doge memes for over a decade.
He recaps the year by saying, "In that sense, maybe the expected humor of memes was a little lackluster, predictable, or reminiscing about "better times" in the meme world, but they were still everywhere, representing some kind of emotional consensus of the moment."

Getting trapped inside abandoned refrigerators was the horror story we children were raised on back in the 50/60's. Modern refrigerators have magnetic closures, not the latches of older refrigerators, so they're easier to open from the inside. However, I've observed my 96 yo neighbor struggle to open her new medium-size refrigerator, so I wonder if a toddler would be strong enough to push it open from inside. I would still err on the side of caution and remove the door.

Actually, (omg I hate being that guy!) - all you have to do is slit the rubber holders and remove the long flexible magnets from the door. It won't stay closed, and it'll hang loosely, but you will have some really long magnets to play with!

The best passwords are three words in a row that mean nothing to anybody else but make a weird sense. For example "Angryunicornsfarting". That's pretty simple to remember, because it creates a weird visual. However, the chances of anybody guessing it based on your profile or even your entire life is astronomically low. Letters are also better than digits, since there are 10 possible digits, but there are 26 possible letters. Using pet names, addresses, occupations, etc, are much simpler to figure out. Male the password something that you use the website for. Like, if you use ravelry to look for crocheted blankets, the password could be CrochetedBlankets4theWin. If you use interpals to find snail mail friends, the password could be Newletters2me. Makes it a whole lot more easy to remember a password than just random numbers and letters. :) (I know I know, I keep mentioning this every time I see a post about passwords.... 😊)
Naturally, we were curious to know which memes our interviewees liked the best in 2023. Varbanova told Bored Panda, “Some of my personal favorite memes were from the Barbie movie, for sure. They were iconic. For the first time in forever, we have a female main character whose life doesn't revolve around the main character (Ken). And some of the best memes show that."
Whereas Smith's favorite ones were about the desire for mental stability and clarity for the average person fighting against the odds of the pandemic and economic inequality.
He explained, "There were many exceptional representations of that, but my favorite was the ASMR Bentley parodies. People were going on TikTok to stitch this seemingly posh young woman showing off a Bentley with actual vehicular circumstances ranging from beat-up Fords and Hondas to semi-trucks to tractors to broken-down armored military vehicles.
It gave us moment-to-moment reflections on working-class circumstances next to the unattainable expectations being marketed. Memes showed up in 2023 to tell the wealthy to lower their capitalistic expectations around conspicuous consumption, unattainable body standards, and respect for the ultra-wealthy. It simultaneously reflected on what was entertaining, understandable, and representative of working-class circumstances. That resonated."

I've donated my body to three university anatomy departments because if one doesn't have the space, the others can be contacted within 24 hours (the cut off for donations). The body is incinerated afterwards. However, if the body is mangled, it cannot be accepted, and other arrangements need to be made. By that time, I won't be in the position to make a decision, so whatever the state does with it is fine with me.

Smith had a similar view, saying that people like memes because they speak for us in simple words, in a way we often can't.
"A meme takes a collective emotional quality to exist and justify our lived experiences and culture. Memes are not just a medium, but a connective expression of culture that emerges from everyday people outside of the bounds of corporate formalities or editorial accuracy to say what we want to really say."

If you have an irregular sleep pattern, maybe biphasic sleep is best for you. I was a night baby & kept an opposing circadian rhythm into my pre-teens. Much effort on my parents & doctors/specialists went into trying to help me sleep the modern 8ish hours at night, with little success. By high school I gave into my two sleeps per 24 hours. I participated in a few sleep studies over the years. Much like with melatonin, if it works for you, it works wonders. Every other week, I go back & forth between two time zones 2 or 3 hours apart. Which is easier to do when I’m already sleeping a segmented schedule. Ideally I get 5 & 3 hours per day. Sometimes it’s 4 & 4, 5 & 2 or even 3 & 3. As long as I get a minimum of 6 hours, I’ve steady energy & stamina throughout wake time. Also, because. I once told my (now ex) sister-in-law that she may be brother’s wife now, but that doesn’t mean forever, while I’ll always be his brother. It was in response to her micro-homophobia and wanting him to take a South Pacific vacation with her, cancelling his role in and not attending my wedding Because they only had enough vacation time to do one or the other and according to her my wedding wasn’t real anyways. So many rules. I’m an adult so I get to be friends with whomever I want, as long as it’s mutual. Who cares if they’re with another, older friend, an ex or maybe a family member or coworker. I recently had a dream where I was cleaning up a lab I was trapped in after an earthquake for several days. No windows, a battery operated light, and lots of manual labor. I had no idea what time OR DAY it was when I finally woke up.

Not long ago I’d gone to sleep early and woke up at 11 PM (had to pee) but it took me at bit of time to realize that it was dark and I didn’t need to text my boss to let her know I’d be late as I was scheduled for 11 AM. Like, I almost hit send before I realized that it wouldn’t be dark at 11 AM.

Like the movies where the mother has a 10 course breakfast ready. The father is in full suit reading a newspaper with coffee, not even stressed about leaving soon. It looks like it's 13:00 outside and the kids are rushing out "No time to eat mom! Gonna be late for school!"

I remember that time I went out on Friday after work and got home midnight Sunday night, had about 6 hours sleep the entire weekend, drank copious amounts and was absolutely fine on Monday morning. That is of course if vomiting down the front of yourself in the shower is what's considered fine.

They are exactly that. They are 20 (maybe 30) something year olds who play teens in a show called PEN15. It's...a weird show. I can't say it's good or bad. It's weird. In my opinion.

That's why you use 2 bank accounts (at the same bank), one that's connected to your bank card, and one that's not. Get a premium account that doesn't charge for nsfs, then transfer money into the primary account as needed. Bingo.
