Traffic sucks. It's just fumes and honking, for the most part. But occasionally, a little bit of color emerges on the back of the car in front of you—a bumper sticker can turn a dull commute into a moment of joy or give you something to think about for the rest of the journey.
The subreddit r/Bumperstickers is a community that collects pictures of these small but memorable messages. Whether it’s a clever pun, a political statement, or a bizarrely specific inside joke, its 88K members have amassed quite the collection!

As writer Charles W. McFarlane pointed out, gone are the days of earnest "Coexist" or "Free Tibet" bumper stickers. Nowadays, most are dipped in irony and sprinkled with absurdity.
These new bumper stickers are part of a growing trend of merchandise made as much to be photographed and shared on social media as they are to be absorbed in the real world.
"We're known as the bumper sticker couple now, I’m sure," Brian Gebhart, 32, who, along with his fiancée, Alyssa Walker, 30, runs Frog Mustard—an unhinged sticker and magnet shop—told McFarlane in an interview. They release a handful of new ones each week.

My New Bumper Sticker 🤷🏽♂️
Brian and Alyssa started the company last winter, after he had a mountain biking accident and needed extra money to pay for surgery. They came up with Frog Mustard — a phrase as nonsensical as many of their designs — using a random name generator.
Their shop currently averages around 1,200 orders a month with a stock of about 350 designs, with such hits as: "On my way to get a lobotomy," "I'm pro-sexualizing the green M&M and I vote!" and "Deny, Defend, Depose" (a reference to Luigi Mangione and UnitedHealthcare). The couple describe their selection as "brain rot stickers."

Don't forget the flip side. If you're conservatard that's in favor of anything that restricts birth control you're fighting against your professed desire to reduce or eliminate abortion.
In American culture, where cars are often seen as physical extensions of their owner's personality, bumper stickers have long been a way to customize vehicles, highlighting your political stance and interests. In many ways, they have been our real-life memes. Nowadays, there's even a good chance that you will see a photo on the street that was once shared on X or Instagram.

A survey found that American women are more likely than men to have a bumper sticker, by 63 percent to 50 percent.
Southerners are the biggest fans, with more than two out of three slapping at least one on their car in Louisiana, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, according to a study conducted by Cheap Car Insurance, a Utah-based comparative services company.
Drivers in the Great Lakes region were the least likely to sport bumper stickers at about 49 percent.

Pro-gun stickers garnered the most negative responses from respondents, with 74 percent thinking that someone who has one must be ignorant, obnoxious, or aggressive.
Bumper stickers that drew the most positive or neutral responses were those that paid tribute to U.S. troops — 51 percent saw it as an expression of opinion or pride, 28 percent thought it was normal or reasonable, and another 9 percent thought it was smart and considerate to display such a design.

Yes, absolutely

As someone from Germany let me share an observation of a very apparent cultural difference: US Americans love to share their opinions. Bumper Stickers, T-Shirts, these signs on the front lawns, loudly speaking about it. You won't find that here in Germany. Nobody will ever place a sign in their front yard to tell people who they are voting for. I'm not judging at all, I'm just pointing out a very obvious and interesting difference. I always wondered why that is.
Possibly because the last time Germany was into posting insignia and telling everyone which side they were on, it didn't end well.
Load More Replies...I live in the UK. Canvassing for the political party/candidate of their choice, yes. Or don't build a by-pass, don't build a housing estate, etc. But these are usually in people's windows, far less noticeable than on front lawns, etc as they seem to be in the U.S.A.
The government wants to distract us from the real issues by making voters feel like it's an "us" and "them" instead of "voters" and "government who is supposed to do good for the voters" situation. That's my take on it.
I 1000% agree with you!! Side note: my favorite bumper sticker I've seen in awhile is... bumperstic...87f5cb.jpg
I have seen lots of videos and read lots of stuff from magazines folk. I am pretty sure they are very happy with „us“ against „them“ without any government involvement whatsoever
Can confirm, in Europe it's considered childish. You can get away with witty texts on t-shirts as a teenager but once you're older, it's just not a thing, even less so on cars.
Ah. That's sad. I'd rather be considered childish and immature than not wear shirts with cute cartoon animals or funny sayings on them. And my van would probably get me committed to a hospital for people with mental illness XD (And that's just a photo of the back I've attached - you should see the sides, lol! And I keep a Christmas wreath zip-tied to the front grille year-round.) But then again, it's cultural differences, so neither is bad or wrong - there's just different attitudes about things, in different cultures/countries :) wolf_blu-6...0b6679.jpg
Woo! I'm a huge Monty Python fan and it just seemed so appropriate! XD There's a larger version of the same sticker on the left side of my van where someone keyed me decades ago (the van is 24 years old, lol.) I've honestly never bothered getting any of its cosmetic issues fixed because the dang van is already so noticeable (giant, bright friggin blue and super rare - they were only produced in the USA for three years) that anything I can do to make it look unappealing to steal or break into, I'm down with XD
Now that I'm in my 40s, I dress in a way that makes me happy. I wear t-shirts with cartoon animals/cute animals on them, or dragons on them, etc., and I wear men's jeans - my favorite pair has a snarling wolf on one leg. I wear a wallet chain (I keep my wallet in my back pocket, I hate purses.) I don't really wear any shirts that would be considered an "opinion" - like nothing political or anything - but I like cute shirts and shirts that make me laugh, and I want to wear what makes me happy. (One of my favorite shirts says "It's not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls from Nakatomi Plaza", a reference to the movie Die Hard.) I guess it's kind of the American thing - compared to many European cultures, we are publicly outgoing, friendly, chatty, and sort of "extroverted" as a culture. Neither is wrong or bad IMO, it just shows that there's just different attitudes about things, in different cultures and countries :)
Not all Americans. It is definitely a regional AND personality traits. Where I live, people tend to keep those opinions to themselves.
You can feel the divisiveness holy s**t... So many are looking more for a fight and less an understanding... I would be a hypocrite if I said I don't feel like that about cult stuff, but that is rational at least. The political division tho... Just binary like that? As in sending the message that you have literally nothing in common with a whole other group of people based on some artificial two party system? That is bleak and in dire need of change... Either it is going to be more dialog or it will be fester and bloat...and explode...maybe rot and stagnate...
May i suggest the French famous national pastime of protesting? Don't have to go full guillotine mode...Or even keep up with their 6 protests per month schedule... Just one or two...around the places that create this problem. Whatever made lobbysts an almost unregulated thing? I would start there myself...That has to be at least a "line" you can follow to the root of this problem. That is my personal conclusion... ps: Not saying that the rest of the world is better by any means. Each have their own brand of Fed up systems and politics and cults etc... We could all pick the best parts from each country and culture tho D:
Load More Replies...If you’re looking for nuance, I suggest you look someplace other than a bumper sticker
If I had lived through the rise of hitler, I'd like to think I would've opposed nazi and nazi sympathizers too. I don't care if I have anything in common with them. You espouse ideals actively hurting other people over things that do not harm you in the least, and you are dead to me. It isn't about politics, it is about ethics, morals, actions. You won't ever catch me going, 'sure they took away peoples rights, demonized whole groups of people, and ensure my healthcare is forever screwed, but hey, they golf real good'
You are not seriously comparing everyone that is not aligned to you to a nazi are you? Your projected image is not reality. That is the first thing you need to come to terms with. Cus many like you would say you are a stalin like commie. Should i believe them? No i wont cus i am not a fing idiot. Do you see what i mean by the insanity of the two party system?
I will look at you like you are insane then. Because i dont see the mass graves, the systematic extermination of all the "subhumans" and all the things that nazis did... Show me please make this clueless f**kíng aßhole be less clueless. Show me how trump voters are killers on that inhuman scale... I will wait... ps: i say the same thing when ppl tell me the other side are "commies" I ask them to show me the gulags... To tell me how they "steal" from others and how they make their fellow american's starve and line them up at walls if they dont give up their properties... They always fail...You and the people i ask those questions that is... Now if you have medication take it...If not please go see a psychatrists.
I would say they are going the Elitism route or something like bourgeoisie 2.0 which in our current day is technocrats... Cus I see a diverse range of people united by power and money... I don't see a bunch of racist genocidal maniacs. Let us look at two "new" republicans Ramaswamy and Elon I see two technocrats who are using their power and money to run s**t the way that helps them and only them. Where is the "superior race" here??? As for trump he is a total Fing wildcard. I can't predict him. My best guess is that he is a pure populist and that is not a compliment. He goes from making rational talks about anti censorship and government control and focus on American economy to insane s**t like prayer in school. So I tend to focus more on the ppl behind him and what I see... as I said are technocrats and a few oligarchs. Anyway both dems and reps Fing suck. To me, it is basically old money vs new money... My logic is simple...They both Hate bernie and did everything in their power to shut him down... It was not reps alone... It was not dems alone... It was both... Look at the media articles in 2016... Look at the hundreds of so called "trusted" news release wild s**t saying Bernie is a racist mysogenist... Not just the CNN side or the FOX side... Almost all of ALL of them... Because everyone with money OLD AND NEW had to shut down their number 1 threat. That is how i see it... Not really the Nazi Mo some ppl here claim because they cannot think outside of the two party system... "CIMMIIOOIIEEEE" "NAAZIIIEE" is legit alot of what i hear from americans... It is beyond pathetic and i wish a new generation of americans steps up and fixes the mess the older ones made...
I absolutely agree. The entire time I was reading this, I had to resist the urge to say things that would receive more than a hundred downvotes each (speaking from experience). I wish people would KEEP POLITICS OUT OF ONLINE FORUMS unless they're meant for debate.
I once had a bumper sticker "If you think the system is working ask someone who isn't"
This started out as a fun post then it became something that sucked all the joy out of it.
That's why I'm looking for the short comments. Longer ones (with exception of some like Lakota Wolf) go far too deep and self-opinionated.
Especially the first few show that there are Americans that are alright. Let's see what the next 4 years bring, and if there is another vote - Trump said on camera a while ago, if he becomes president, US citizens won't have to vote again. I hope the sane and intelligent US citizens will overcome such dreadful possibilities.
I love many of these, but I would not put them on my vehicle today, there are too many emboldened racist haters out there who could and would destroy property because they are offended
I probably wouldn't put any of them on my van either, not these days. I (warily) put a small sticker that says "Successfully Microchipped" on my van after I got my first COVID vax (back in 2020 when everyone was screaming that the government was injecting you with tracking microchips with the vaccine) and I was worried I'd get repercussions even for that (the sticker is like 2" big.) I live in a very blue state, but the city itself that I live in is horrifically red. Then again, my van is 24 years old and pretty jacked up at this point, so what's the worst that someone could do? XD (It's already got a number of scratches, and I have a decal with the Monty Python black knight saying "Tis But A Scratch" next to the worst ones!)
Load More Replies...I like to read clever bumper stickers for the entertainment value...they're also a way to express dislike, disdain, dissatisfaction while expressing your smarts at the same time. What's not to like? I don't know how effective they are because their target audience is often too dumb to know THIS MEANS YOU or doesn't get the point in the first place. BTW: I am a lousy parker and I know it. I figure if I am between the lines it doesn't matter if I'm at a 40 degree angle.
