50 Times People Shared The Worst Beauty Salon Services They’ve Ever Received
Interview With Expert“This does not look like the picture,” I say after getting home from the beauty salon and staring at myself in the mirror. “Why can’t they ever do what I ask for?” was the second thought I uttered out loud. Perhaps my first mistake was bringing an inspiration photo found in the depths of Pinterest that, realistically, is impossible to achieve, or maybe not scrolling long enough through the salon reviews online.
Whatever the reason might’ve been, chances are, I’m not the only one stuck asking these questions following every salon visit. However, some people are even less fortunate, having to go into hiding after falling into the hands of inexperienced professionals. Our team at Bored Panda has scoured the web and found the most chilling examples of beauty makeovers gone wrong. Hold onto your seats tight as we go through the rollercoaster that these pictures below are, and don’t forget to upvote the ones you felt bad for chuckling at.
While you're at it, make sure to check out a conversation with a licensed hairstylist and makeup artist, Andrea Claire, who kindly agreed to share some tips on how to avoid a failed beauty makeover.

Bad Nails For A Worse Price
This Was The Absolute Worst Haircut Of My Life. How Does Someone Stay In Business When Stuff Like This Happens? I Wish I Could Warn Future Customers
We reached out to a licensed hairstylist and makeup artist, Andrea Claire, to get to the bottom of why clients often feel like they never get what they ask for at a beauty salon.
“Clients not getting what they want really comes down to communication and failed expectations,” she says. Which can come from both clients and hairstylists, Claire adds.

This Was Supposed To Be The Finished Product. This Amount Of Highlighter Is Completely Unnecessary, And The Makeup Artist Has Completely Changed The Entire Complexion Of This Client
“As a client, one may come in with an unachievable vision and the hairstylist may not properly articulate that this is not achievable,” she says. Therefore, to receive the expected result, it’s crucial to communicate.
The not-so-desired hairstyle, makeup look, or manicure, is also hugely influenced by the many challenges that beauty specialists face to meet clients' specific needs (which the person sitting in the chair doesn’t usually take into account).

Nail Tech Did Gel, And They Look Like This. The Gel Underneath Is All Super Visible, And It Looks Sloppy
“The hurdles we stylists need to overcome with clients’ expectations these days often lie with misinformation within social media posts. Filters and editing on their inspirational images and videos really play a huge part in barriers when it comes to successful hair transformations. Even many hairstylists filter their work,” she tells us.
Claire mentions that lighting can impede the person evaluating the end result, too. “You may get a desired cool tone blonde but your bathroom lighting at home may have warm lightbulbs, or you're taking a snap in the golden hour sunshine, now your selfie looks like your cool blonde is golden. Going back to your hairstylist asking for a color fix [isn’t really possible] when it might just be a lighting issue.”
It’s Definitely Ugly, Right? Is This Bad Enough That You Would Ask For A Refund? I Paid 290 For It And Didn’t Tip
I felt so bad I almost cried but I couldn’t justify tipping when I hated it so much, maybe I’m being dramatic. The first picture was the haircut I wanted, the second picture was the color I wanted. All my friends said it was cute, and one even said it looked like the picture I gave.

What I Asked For vs. What I Got
Something else that might interfere with a successful hair transformation is if the person previously had layers of colored hair and now wants an immediate drastic change. “Artificial color will NOT lift artificial color,” Claire explains. “Stripping color is stressful on the hair shaft. You may require harsh chemicals or even bleach to push through, often multiple appointments are needed to hit your desired look and can compromise the integrity of the hair. Instagrammers show us before and afters but may not include the full story of the 4 other appointments in-between that before and after.”

As for how people can avoid failed beauty makeovers, Claire says, “Talk it out. Make sure that you feel that you are on the same page. If you aren’t sure repeat the plan. Both the hairstylist and the client need to have a clear understanding of the process and the desired end result.”

She also kindly shared additional tips that could be helpful for anyone looking for a big change. “Ask for a consultation when going to a new stylist or having a big change. Then book an appointment for your change for another day. This way if you’re not keen on the stylist or the idea, you’re not thrust into something that you didn’t want after all.”
What I Asked For vs. What I Got. What Would Y’all Have Done If A Licensed Hair Stylist Did This? I Couldn’t Even Get It Corrected By Another Salon
This is how my stylist let me leave after telling me it looked amazing. I paid $85. I ended up shaving it off. It was super dead and ugly and now I permanently wear wigs.
She and her coworkers were hyping me up that it looked great but look at all those patches.
So you wanted orange and ended up with yellow and brown. She did a horrible job and damaged your hair in the process. You shouldn't have paid for it.
This Nail Salon Is Gaslighting Me
I asked for color #17 in the book (background) while at the nail salon today. When she started painting my nails with the #17 in the bottle, I was surprised and asked if she accidentally grabbed the wrong one - since it was a completely different color.
They said nope, that was correct. I asked to swap out for a different color and politely suggested they double-check in case there was a labeling error.
The response: These #17 colors are the same, so they don’t need to be checked. It’s just that their colors “fade over time” like “because of the sun and stuff.”

Bringing visual photos may help to better communicate your desired result. “I love visual references from clients,” says Claire. “This tells me where their head is at. I recommend to clients to bring in references of hair types that are the same as theirs. If you resemble a celebrity, try to find a reference of them since celebs have countless images online. Sometimes celebs’ hairstylists do interviews sharing how they got the look which is also very helpful. Share images of what you don’t like as well,” she advises.

Lastly, Claire urges against using professional hairstylist terms to describe what you want. “That’s almost always going to be a fail. When a client uses a hairstylist language with me I flip it back to them in layperson terms so they are clear. The best example of this is when someone says they only want one layer. One layer is impossible because that’s a vivid line in the hair. You most likely mean that you want long layers. But one layer, no. You definitely do not want a standout, ill-blended line in your hair.”
Soft And Subtle Glam, Sure
... and 'soft'... and 'glam'... and 'creative' too.
Load More Replies...I love how she contoured her nose to highlight its natural bend, making it look like it bends inwards more 😂
I'm not sure she understands what the word subtle means. Also, she made her cheeks look so droopy!
If slammed in your face with a cast iron skillet is the definition of subtle, then this is subtle
The first thing to come to mind was the Twilight Zone episode 'The Masks'. 😬
Neither soft nor subtle. Looks like she has one of those masquerade ball half masks...
Considering there's so much contour, her face looks 2-dimensional.
I am absolutely astounded that many of these are apparently ads promoting their work. They clearly say “Staythe hell away if you wanna look beautiful!” 😱
I'm just curious what she looks like without such monstrous make up on. Would we even recognize here as the same person? I think not!
Should I Go Back And Request A Refund?
I got these this afternoon and paid $90 AUD, the pictures on their reviews are really good so I decided to give them a try, I hated them when I walked out but I really struggle with confrontation. I asked for Gel-X with a black French tip but they don’t even look like a French tip and the application is extremely messy. Do I go back tomorrow and request a refund? I’m really unhappy with them, especially at that price point.

Makeup Artist Near Me
I Can’t Believe I Let Myself Leave The Salon Like This
What is wrong with me, I’m sure I’m not alone in being a non-confrontational person but these are embarrassing. I ended up calling five minutes after I left the salon (because I’m a wuss), spoke to the manager and she said I could get them fixed tomorrow. Phew.

A few of these were never achievable to begin with. If you take an inspiration picture of a person who’s hair texture is completely different than your own or who has a look that’s only achievable through a lot of styling then there’s no way you’re going to get that result on the daily. A good stylist would tell you as much though I suppose.
Correct. I'm a loctician and I've refused several times, because they came with these ultrastyled Insta pics which were completely unrealistic, fake, and/or completely unsuited for their hair. Once a guy even got upset because I said, I'm not going to do that. Yeah sorry to crush your dreams. I'm not going to set myself up for failure and you for disappointment.
Load More Replies...I remember when the "Rachel" cut was popular (friends) and everyone wanted it including me. My stylist said she could do it but that cut takes a lot of work in styling I would need to blowout my hair everyday and use a lot of product to get the body in the roots which is difficult with my thick heavy hair. Instead she gave me an adorable lob with lots of layers that took weight off my hair and gave it some natural bounce. Thats when i discovered i have soms natural waves in my hair! now i always get it cut like that when i do cut my hair.
I think my biggest boggle is how no one ever stops them after the first nail that's janky. I have taken my granddaughters to get their nails done in their pre-driving teen years. That stuff takes A WHILE to do! You sit there, watching them fark up all ten nails, not use your big girl words and then post photos on social media whining about how bad they are. Oooooooooookay then.
Back when the Farrah Fawcett hairdo was all the rage, many tried to duplicate it, but few could get it right. My sister had just the right kind of hair for it--thick and coarse. She kept that style for years. Stylists ought to tell their clients upfront if their hair simply won't do what they ask for. Also: What's the deal with those monstrous acrylic nails? How can you go about a normal life with those claws on your fingers? I think they're hideous.
I had a haircut once where I had asked for about 3" off the length (blunt cut--my hair was almost shoulder length). The guy cut my hair with my back to the mirror, so I couldn't see what was being done. When he finished I had 1/2 " of hair all over my head. I wore a hat for 6 months and created a new personality to deal with the "look". It was pretty awful. Took me a long time to trust another stylist.
Do these people pay beforehand? Surely, when you look at the result while in the salon you don't pay if they messed it up.
rule #1 when you're on the wrong end of a hatchett job--REFUSE TO PAY! rule #2 - go somewhere else to have it fixed! the only way i'd ever pay for crappy services is under threat of arrest, but then i'd be taking them to small claims court. Get my money back, PLUS the cost of having it fixed
My wife's head is shaved most of the way up the sides/back. First time done, the line looked drunk. Took months of sculpting the line for me to straighten it out and put it where she wanted it. I sometimes get too busy and she'll have it done again and it's back to fixing it all over again. I SET UP A PERFECT LINE and they can't follow it. It's a STRAIGHT LINE and it's too hard to follow. One removed almost a full inch above the line AND it wandered all over!
When I was a make-up artist (13 years in the professional industry), I never let my ego get the best of me and would fully admit when something was out of my zone. I would never want to have a client walk away feeling worse than when they came in.
All these "stylists" and "make up artists" should be ashamed of themselves and their shïtty work and i do hope they go out of business. 😡
Why do so many of these stories say they paid for the service? My son once got the worst haircut and we just walked out the door and never came back.
...and people have been telling me im crazy for waiting for my regular, talented hair stylist to return from her surgery and recovery. "Just go to someone new! How much different can it be?"- yeah, no thanks, I'll wait. Just throw my hair up in a bun while she recovers. Not taking a chance with anyone else
Went to new hairstylist yesterday. Paid $60 for a haircut. My wife was nearly in tears after I got back wondering "what she did to my beautiful hair!" I showed the stylist a picture of the sides and back I wanted (had it multiple times before.) Nope, she pretty much shaved halfway up the back of my head bald and the sides too. It is horrible. I don't want to be seen in public.
This is why I don't spend a lot of money on hair, makeup or nails. Natural is definitely safer and cheaper. I know exactly what I get.
Folks ... especially ladies ..... STOP WASTING YOUR MONEY on outrageous styling for hair and nails. Can't you accept the looks nature ( or God, if you prefer ) gave you ?
It's true that some of these are unattainable and you need to be honest with yourself and your hair and nail techs have to be honest with you. Outside of that, why are you paying them. If they do a horrible job you need to let them know you obey them next time when you come in and they fix it for you. But in the meantime they can call a lawyer and go after you if they want to. This is nothing what you ask for.
Same bad experience. I went for blending gray and I got the blondest highlights ever done .
Suddenly this makes me feel much better about the time I tried to give my college roommate highlights and ended up making her look like a Dalmatian. In my defense, I was an English major and there may have been booze involved.
Lol. I had an experience when I noticed the hair stylist cut it way too short. When I pointed it out, she blurted out, “What do you want me to do? Glue it back on?” She immediately clapped her hands over her mouth. You could tell she was shocked and embarrassed she said that. She then offered some viable solutions. While I understood she probably just had a bad day or some personal stuff she was going through, I never went back to her.
Last time I cut my hair, it took three cuts with the scissors (and about 3 seconds), I did it myself and it looks better than many of these. (That said I have fairly long and very thin hair. Long enough to cut it myself, anyway.) The amount of money I haven't spent on hair dressing, nails and make up over the years would be mind boggling if I had any idea how much some people actually spend...
