There’s something eternally captivating about American high schools. The unparalleled level of drama, the personalized lockers, the crushes and the enemies, the cheerleaders and football players, the good teachers and the bad ones, and of course, the highly anticipated prom night that is the quintessential moment marking the end of an era known as American adolescence.

But have you ever wondered how much exactly this cliche picture of American sophomore year is true? What if in reality, Mean Girls, Juno, and Superbad were nothing more than Hollywood fiction that masterfully manipulated our sense of nostalgia?

In order to find the answers, it’s best to ask people who have been there and done that. So when someone asked Americans “How true are ‘American high school movies’ compared to real-life high school?” people immediately took the opportunity to share their experiences.

Americans Reveal 28 Things That Are True And False About High School According To Movies I remember one time in school, I was walking down the hall with my books in my arms. A random bully ran down the hall and slapped them down, hard, sending all my stuff flying everywhere. In a movie, everyone would point and laugh. In movies, that sort of obvious bullying of a nerd would be treated as funny and normal. In reality, the other kids gasped, and a few random kids stopped and helped me gather up my things. I remember one girl saying, "That was so mean."

Bullying didn't happen much at our school because no one just stood there and took it. I saw a kid get slapped on the back of the head and called a f****t, and he ran up to the bully and headbutted him on the nose. Blood everywhere as he kicked the bully in the goolies repeatedly, screaming "WHO'S THE F****T NOW?" It was that sort of thing that put a stop to bullying because it was too easy to have your head handed back to you on a silver platter.

When I was in high school in the 90’s, kids used the word “gay” to mean like bad or stupid. (I didn’t). Even kids that weren’t homophobic used the expression. It became like part of the vernacular almost; which was an awful thing. There were few if any openly gay kids. My husband (44 years old), every once in a blue moon, still rolls his eyes at something he deems stupid (like a rule at work or something) and says “That’s so gay!” Which is immediately followed by my four children (ages 8-16) and I angrily chastising him.

There's a South Park episode S:13 E:12 "the F word" It kind of describes the 90's "gay" perfectly. Gay is ok, but riding a Harley and ruining people's time out makes you a F****t.

It may not have been true for you, but it was true when and where I grew up. Books were slammed out of your arms, people were actually shoved in lockers. It really was brutal with the bullying in the 80s and 90s in North Texas, Dallas area. Worse, even the teachers got in on the bullying of some students.

When I was in high school, a lot of boys on the football and wrestling teams made a pact. Jack up any bully you see. No bullying.

When I was absent for a week I came back to my locker unlocked and ransacked, with all the paper in my binder out all over the place. I was so upset. There was a few people who bullied me every time they saw me. No one stood up for me or helped me out. If anything more and more people took issue with my presence and all I was doing was trying to keep a low profile and mind my business.

Yeah schools are too big for everyone to know who the one nerd is, so no one cares who it is who got bullied, just that they can either help and move on or stand there and wait for the person to pick it up themselves

I went to a School for the Creative and Performing Arts (I was a music major). We also had an advance academic magnet program that many of us were also enrolled in. Many of us also played sports. Since so many of us were mixed together because of classes and activities and whatnot, we basically all knew each other. There were super popular kids, arts kids, nerds, etc. and we all pretty much got along. I mentioned in another post my g/f was a cheerleader but she was also a dance major and in advanced academics. Many of the students at my school were like us. It wasnt perfect but it was a pretty cool environment for high school.

Bored Panda reached out to the Redditor The_Nomadic_Nerd who is originally from New York but currently lives in New Jersey. He shared this post in response to the thread: “Friend groups are more porous than they make. For instance, there were football players that also acted in school plays, or wrestlers also in the math club. The bullying is less dramatic. Nobody is actually getting locked in a locker. We did actually use those red cups at parties that you always see in movies, my non-American friends were always shocked when I told them that.”

When asked if there is anything that Hollywood gets right about American high schools, the Redditor said that they did actually use those red solo cups at parties. “Foreigners I know are always shocked by that. What did they think we use? They’re not fragile like glass and if you lose it, it wasn’t a problem. Plus, you could easily just throw them away when you’re cleaning up after the party.”

also cheerleaders aren't the stuck up high society prima donnas as they're sometimes shown. The cheerleader captain when I was in HS worked in Taco Bell after school and another one's family had a horse breeding ranch. She fed horses and mucked out stalls after school. Neither of them dated the football QB.

My g/f was a cheerleader and I know they wore their uniforms on days where we had football and basketball games. And i think assemblies. I forget what they had the option to wear on other days. Maybe a sweater or something? Much like us who had letterman's jackets I know they had something to wear besides their uniforms to denote that they were cheerledaers.

They were allowed to wear them to the afternoon classes because once school was out we had the pep rally and then the game so they didn't have time to change. But you rarely saw a girl in uniform outside of that.

Americans Reveal 28 Things That Are True And False About High School According To Movies A weird thing is how they seemingly show it as if kids just have time to talk and chat in the middle of the day in the hallway by their lockers when in reality you're booking it across the building because you have 5 minutes to go from the first floor, get to your locker on the second floor, and then run all the way across the 3rd floor to your 3rd period class. Also dunno about y'all but I got only 25 minutes for lunch in HS, so nobody was milling about during lunch either in the halls.

That seems crazy to me. We don't even have cafeterias in Australian schools usually, just a canteen/tuckshop which doesn't have tables and chairs and is usually in a separate building and you order though a window. Lunch and recess you have to stay outside, unless the rain is heavy, then you have a 'wet day timetable' and the library and 2 or so classrooms are open and you can borrow chess sets, uno, magazines, or play games on the computer etc.

Talk about booking it.... my HS had 6 floors and a basement with classrooms. My English class was in the basement followed by my next class of History. Guess where THAT classroom was? Yup on the 6th floor. 5 mins to hike my a*s up 7 flights of stairs. Talk about winded! Even for a 16 year old athletic type, it was a beast! They had an elevator but it was for faculty & wheelchair bound students only (and the occasional busted ankle or leg, which I discovered after powdering my right ankle playing ice hockey!)

I hated that. Especially when your just finished a shops class and you have to pack up your stuff and the next class is way, way on the other end of the school and there's still a crowd to get through. My class complained to our teachers about giving us some leniency. Running is not allowed and would still make us late. Any socializing would be during free periods, and that's if you and your friends have the same time slots.

Moreover, The_Nomadic_Nerd confirmed that in some cases sports are very important. “All those TV shows about high school football in Texas are absolutely correct. Not uncommon at some high schools for the football coach to get paid more than the principal, or the Friday night game being what the whole town goes to. Other regions or specific schools also have their own sports, like Iowa and high school wrestling. Usually, if a school has a history of a good team, then the town starts to revolve around that,” he explained.

Another thing movies get right, Redditor argues, is that feeling of getting a driver’s license. “Once you get it and if you’re one of the first to get theirs, your social status automatically climbed. I was one of the older kids in my class so I got my license before most, and all of a sudden more people wanted to be my friend. Weird how that works…”

The Redditor also said that there is this notion of when you’re in high school, it defines the rest of your life. That may be particularly challenging for students. “You don’t have a girlfriend in high school? When then you’re going to be lonely the rest of your life. You didn’t get into honors math? Well, then you just have a permanent tattoo that says ‘IDIOT’ on your forehead.”

Never wanted to be popular. Always found being with people draining and restricting. There was certain things I wanted to do and actual places to go, but the people just wanted to loiter in a parking lot or sit around at the mall daring each other to do something that would get them in trouble. I was content going skating, tobogganing, biking, roller blading, going to the parks to toss a ball, have a picnic, drawing at home, and chilling watching my favourite shows.

Yet the girls would (sometimes literally) fight to be with him. The popular kids treated everyone else like dirt.

Depends on income level in my area. My cousins, whose parents BOTH make over $160k a year, absolutely had a cooked breakfast every morning, because my aunt/uncle had a live-in housekeeper. They would have a nice selection waiting, every morning, and would eat together before leaving for the morning. I loved staying over there during the summers. So...it just depends on the lifestyle, I guess.

How about the absolutely insane amount of pancakes/orange juice/fruit already on the table then everyone just grabs a bit of toast and explains they have to leave because they are late for a meeting etc.....leaving one kid just sitting there alone with the dog. I'm pretty sure as well that one of the parents is still cooking fxxxxxg pancakes as well whilst being late for work.

I used to get to school pretty early but that was because 1) the intersection in front of our school was always so congested (bc there's 3000 cars plus buses trying to get into 1 entrance in the highschool complex) that youd sit in traffic halfway into first period if you were late so I left early and got the prime parking spot and hung out in the art room

Not sure if this is meant to be real or a misconception, but worldwide school starting hours seem to vary a lot. Generally speaking in Germany that's about 8 a.m. throughout ages 7 to 18, meaning getting up at 6 or 6.30 is pretty standard here, depending on how far away your school is.

Americans Reveal 28 Things That Are True And False About High School According To Movies Friend groups are more porous than they make. For instance, there were football players that also acted in school plays, or wrestlers also in the math club. The bullying is less dramatic. Nobody is actually getting locked in a locker. We did actually use those red cups at parties that you always see in movies, my non-American friends were always shocked when I told them that.

I disagree with this one. Yes there was lots of boundry crossing in terms of social groups. But when I look back I realize that some really awful things happened too. Economic class differences had their effects on how we broke up into groups. And there was incredibly cruel racist bullying. Certain individuals seemed marked as social pariahs, for reasons that I still don't fathom, and they became targets for emotional bullying, etc.

My high school in SoCal took up an entire large city block. All the classrooms were ground floor, with two entrances. There was a large parking lot. The gym had indoor and outdoor pools, as well as the basketball court, and the cafeteria, assembly room, and theatre were in separate buildings. Seniors could get a lunch pass to eat off campus. We also had designated smoking areas—-and this was in 1978. I graduated in a class of 828 students. Multiply that by 3, and you have an approximate number of students in the school (back then we didn’t have middle school, we had junior high, which was grades 7, 8, and 9, so high school was just grades 10, 11, and 12).

My HS in Houston, Texas did have where you went outside to go between buildings. The building/wings had huge overhangs. It was built in 1962 so these features were to help keep the building cool. My niece and Nephew go there now. Things are closed in with lockable doors in the name of building security. When I went there in the early 80s - we had a bomb go off in the Math wing. An attempt to destroy a teacher's grade book. When my sister went there late 80s - her freshman year they had multiple bomb threats weekly - in part in the protest of 2 other HSs being closed down and some of their students sent to our school (The three had been huge rivals). They took out the pay phones nd the number of threats went way down. In the last 7 years, Niece has been in Middle and HS - the only lockdowns have been weather related. So that is an improvement.

Americans Reveal 28 Things That Are True And False About High School According To Movies The fact that Superbad spent a whole movie trying to obtain alcohol is totally realistic. We absolutely had whole evening adventures trying to get booze. The Hawaii driver's license was definitely a thing in the mid 1990s. California IDs had holograms earlier and couldn't be faked anymore. Several people at school at fake Hawaii IDs back then. I'm sure one of the writers must be my age from CA. I watched this movie with an ex (South American) and he was confused because they all just bought booze from the tiendas when they were like 13.

In Manitoba (not sure about elsewhere) it's not necessarily illegal to allow your kids to drink alcohol in your own, private home with supervision. I was allowed champagne when I was 15 for New Years Eve celebrations at home. My mom would give me sips of wine. Kids are allowed in restaurant lounges as long as they're with a parent, but can't drink alcohol. It all depends how strict your region's laws are on alcohol.

I knew plenty of places to buy booze. I also got a real driver's license with my older brother's info. Our names are variations on the same name and our birthdays are 3 days apart (he's four years older)... went in saying I lost it and had that from when I turned 17...

New Jersey licenses were still made of paper, filled out with a typewriter, and had a separate picture laid on top of it before being laminated, all the way up to 2003-2005. I made a killing in high school selling fake IDs for $100 because my dad had a heat press and a fancy printer for T shirts. Cost me like $3 apiece to make them.

We'd mostly get it from older siblings or have the hottest girls ask grown men who walked into liquor stores. The trick was finding late college aged dudes or old hippie dudes.

Americans Reveal 28 Things That Are True And False About High School According To Movies Prom is way less of a big deal in real life. Kids look forward to it and get dressed up, a few might do the limo thing. But it’s not the end-all be-all of the high school student’s year. And really no one cares who wins prom queen.

I remember who won prom king because he was one of the like maybe 20 black kids in my school (my graduating class was about 500 people) and he won mostly because he was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia. Everyone basically treated him like he was at deaths door and his senior year would be his last in life. He was a really nice guy and last I heard doing quite well; were 39/40 now

I didnt want to go to my prom, but my step monster wanted to live her dream through me I guess. It was at our state capital building and all the rich snobby kids were in a big group just jumping up and down falling into each other. Also all the girls in that group took their shoes off 🤢 smelled like feet and sweaty teenagers. Me and my friend left and went to Wendys and we got free food cause they said we looked so beautiful and that was the highlight of the night

Homecoming is a bigger deal where I live now, but neither were a big deal at my sister's small school. When I was in my twenties I got an invite to her school prom like dance, there was no royalty, most the kids were friends with each other, like, half of them were queer, lots of ambiguous gender presentation, and many invited younger siblings and family members. My son attended, he was like, two. It was really cute and fun. The kids were all smiling and laughing and generally being a bit silly. Nobody was wasted or spiking punch bowls.

Americans Reveal 28 Things That Are True And False About High School According To Movies I went to high school (obviously) and teach at a high school, all in the United States. I went to a suburban school in California and teach at a small town school also in California. Here are my observations. Things foreigners often think are fake that are real: -sports are connected to school. There are people who wear uniforms on game days, there are rallies, and there are school rivalries. They aren’t usually as serious as depicted on shows, but they are real. -cheerleaders do exist. They wear uniforms on game days as well (not everyday.) -yellow school buses exist (where I teach they bring students in who live in the country. Kids who live in town walk, drive, or get dropped off.) (Red and other color plastic cups also exist, as a side note.) -some kids really do have cars at that age. Most probably can at least drive. -“student government” or “student body president” is often a real thing, but it has little power. Basically just a student committee to rubber-stamp whatever the administration is going to do anyway. Things foreigners often think are common that are fake or exaggerated: -being a cheerleader or an athlete are not nearly as exclusive as depicted, nor do they automatically equate to popularity. -cliques are far more fluid than depicted. Rarely do they automatically center around one activity (like football or band or chess club.) It’s not at all uncommon for people to do a lot of different activities that blend stereotypes (like a football player who is a chess club officer and in student government.) -bullying is rarely anything like it’s depicted. It’s rarely done in front of everyone with bystanders not caring. It’s more common to be done in secret, and to focus on emotional rather than physical bullying (although physical bullying does happen.) I think movies and shows are trying to capture what it *feels* like (that no one is there to help you) and missing what it actually looks like in reality. -everything is way more boring and less dramatic than depicted. Fiction requires conflict and so tv shows and movies create it even where it probably wouldn’t actually happen.

I went to high school with a nationally ranked cheerleading team, and not once ever, in the history of the school did one of the cheerleader put on their uniform unless it was a game. Even at the very few pep rallies held for our champion basketball team, they would wear matching sweat suits.

Same with us. We were not even allowed to wear our uniforms unless it was specifically requested to do so. When we did fundraisers like carwashes, we wore just the tops or bottoms, but only for games (we did wear them to class on game days to advertise) and rallies did we don the full uniform. And we never carried around our pom-poms like I always see on tv lol...those things were annoying.

I agree with most of this, except the very end, where they state it's less dramatic. I can remember some very, very dramatic things that happened. I think the biggest was my band teacher getting caught after assaulting us for YEARS. He died in prison, if you're wondering. Cancer. Sometimes the bad things do happen to the bad people.

I would also like to take the chance to point out that the yellow school busses are free for all students, which I know some exchange students are surprised about. More people have their drivers liscences because it us way cheaper to get drivers Ed here than in Europe, also people live farther away from the school. Emotional bullying is so much worse than physical. I can punch back, but initiating a fight would get you in worse trouble. My principal also sucked, but he won an award for "talking down" a student on a stabbing spree. He shares a name with a certain celebrity basketball star, and shoe ;)

The bullying thing is so true! If kids were ever bullied in front of others, someone almost always said something or stepped in, if not while it happened, right after. Moreso even now. Most teens in gen Z are really emotionally intelligent compared to previous generation and while there are still toxic jerks, most everyone else will call them on their awfulness if they do it publically. Most bullying happens in secret or at least somewhat private and is more subtle.

I went to highschool in the South, American football was a huge deal there. If you were in your school's varsity team, you could murder a teacher in the hall between classes, just so long as you weren't late for practice. And my school sucked at football. We placed dead last in our region my freshman year. Other than that i agree

Again, in the city for me. We either walked to school in nice weather or took a bus / elevated train. We'd get a pack of 10 transit (SEPTA) tokens each good for one way so basically a 5 day weeks worth. I hardly used them, I'd mostly opt to walk as I'd go by a record store and being a collector (still am!) I'd buy records by saving my lunch money, or just go in and look around. This was in the ealry 70's. I wouldn't dare do that now and my old HS is a shell of itself. It's still a Vo-Tech... but the neighborhood is completely drug ridden. Sad.

Not in downtown major cities, but as soon as the schools get out into the suburbs of a city they definitely have massive parking lots that are often full of hundreds of cars. I live in St Louis county in a suburban area, 25 minutes from downtown without traffic, and our highschool kids have all sorts of cars, from old beaters to newer SUVs. It's very common for kids to carpool. Same area my mom grew up in, even same house, the highschool is a couple miles further away now, by the old highschool is my son's middle school, it's a five or six minute drive, twenty minutes walk because of shortcuts/walking trails, but my mom and her siblings carpooled with each other or friends. One highschool nearby, unfortunately not my son's future schol, the kids have assigned parking spots they can paint to decorate. It's really freaking cute.

Americans Reveal 28 Things That Are True And False About High School According To Movies Speaking just for my school, not even close. Bullying is never as obvious as it is in movies (nobody dumps their tray on anyone or purposefully trips the new kid, actually most people are pretty friendly), most of the teachers and the principal are well- liked, there aren't well- defined cliques (nerdy group, jocks, cheerleaders, etc.) but there are large friend groups that intertwine and overlap and there is definitely drama. They do get active shooter drills and the amount of drugs/ smoking/ vaping right, though. Also, crazy, entitled parents.

Americans Reveal 28 Things That Are True And False About High School According To Movies The lockers are huge on tv and they’re all at eye level. I remember getting to high school and being disappointed we had these cubby-sized lockers stacked on top of each other, and they were in the most inconvenient places around the school. So there was no leisurely chatting with your best pal whose locker was right next to yours. And not nearly enough space to decorate your locker with photos and mirrors like a bedroom.

My first HS had full height lockers so student could put snow boos at the bottom, and hang their jackets. Not a lot of shelf space, but enough to at least stow a couple of textbooks. My 2nd HS was in a warm state, so dint expect student to put anything other than books. Those were the less convenient ones, cubbies stacked. I rarely used mine as my locker was frequently on the opposite end of the school from most of my classes.

Americans Reveal 28 Things That Are True And False About High School According To Movies Different enough to warp the expectations of certain people. Someone upthread said that movies are designed by Hollywood execs to fill story niches and archetypes, which is pretty accurate. We're watching a story that has to be carefully crafted to fill the expectations of all the audience members, and the audience expects Reese Witherspoon as prom queen, Bill Gates as captain of the chess team, Jack Black's the clown, and Brad Pitt's the quarterback...even though *that doesn't actually happen*. There's more truth in *Napoleon Dynamite* than there is in *Bring It On* or *Mean Girls*.

Napoleon Dynamite is a movie. There really isn't much drama like most high school movies. Napoleon and the students are played like awkward teens. It is a slice of life movie not one where the underdog necessarily wins over the popular crowd. That is why people liked it, because it was realistic.

It was the hunting club that was more into bullying for my school. The sports teams were nice for the most part.

We were NEVER as unsupervised as those kids in Euphoria! I constantly think, "Where the heck are all the adults?" when watching that show.

They are saying the movies are basically advertisements for our school system. But it is way different compared to the actual state of our highschool. (At least this is my assumption)

Americans Reveal 28 Things That Are True And False About High School According To Movies I went to high school in the early 90s, at a huge school where I was in a class of 400 something. There were cliques and a popularity ladder, but it wasn't super rigid. I was fairly uncool but my little group of girlfriends were cool (Homecoming Queen, which mattered back then) and cool-adjacent. I just didn't always go do their Cool People Stuff with them because it wasn't my thing. And by senior year the cliques and ladder had broken down nearly completely. Everyone was focused on what came next, nobody cared about popularity c**p anymore. So I'd be sitting around with all sorts of kids, swapping tips on different colleges, proofing each other's essays, different other kids would be telling me why they were interested in the military, I'd let the Cosmetology voc ed friends of friends put my hair in updos during lunch (it was elbow length, so loads of fun), etc.

Stoners were the nicest people in highschool. They accepted everyone whether they smoked or not. They didn't care what you wore or how much money you have. They accept you for you.

Americans Reveal 28 Things That Are True And False About High School According To Movies We didn't have the paddling or any of that (and it was decades later) but the vibe of Dazed & Confused was pretty true of my experience - cliques were not really that well-defined, 'nerds' and 'stoners' and 'jocks' all crossing over and mixing together in various ways.

We had well-defined cliques (late 90's), but it wasn't like they were insular. Even though there were cliques, the different cliques hung out together if they were somewhat similar. The theater kids and jocks/cheerleaders didn't hang out, but the theater kids hung out with goths, the goths hung out with stoners, the stoners hung out with the skaters, and skaters hung out with the jocks, for instance.

Paddling is for sure still a thing in some states. Arkansas particularly but a lot of southern and eastern states it's common. They had it in Missouri elementary schools when I was a kid and some schools still do. I didn't go to highschool in Missouri, so I can't speak for that.

Some did (and still do in the South) have the paddling.

Americans Reveal 28 Things That Are True And False About High School According To Movies Not very true. Life is more boring day in and day out. Poeple are also definetely more serious about school if you live in a well populated area

Especially if it’s an area with lots of company headquarters and an abundance of highly educated professionals in residence. If it’s the middle of nowhere with no industry, no higher education, and no local prospects for your future unless you inherit or marry into the family farm or business, then many kids would just think school’s a waste of time—-an attitude learned from their parents.

I went to school in a place with lots of defense contractors and PhDs. Most of the families were in the military or sold stuff to the military. So you got a wide range of family income levels, from lower middle class to crazy rich. Mostly though, kids were serious about school. There was also a small group of immigrant kids (of which i was a member). Those kids could go either way. Either they studied like crazy to achieve that American dream, or they did a vocational school program, to make money and support the family. Usually if they were a firstborn or only child, they would have to start earning income as soon as possible. The younger siblings would then have to make their sacrifice worth it. Luckily my mom was serious about school, so my older brother didn't have to make money for the family. Also my step dad worked for the government, so we were okay.

Americans Reveal 28 Things That Are True And False About High School According To Movies We had 2:30 in between class periods. We did not have time to lean against the lockers and talk. Sometimes it rains, sometimes it snows, sometimes the wind blows; we had to go to school then too. In the winter it was very cold, in the summer it was unbearably hot. I bet they've fixed that because the expensive electronics would cook themselves. A school didn't need anything like that when they built the building. Usually there was some construction crew outside banging and hammering on something. There was no restaurant that we all hung out in. We did mob a pizza place a few times after the dances. They got mad because their employees were too busy, they didn't make enough money off of us and because the old people buying expensive food couldn't get through us. We caused numerous major traffic jams because we kept crossing the street. The cops showed up to direct traffic. The pizza place complained. The police went to the school and they told our parents that we had to stop. They let kept the rec center open later for us instead. They actually did put on a really good after party for the middle school dances after that. They just herded us all into there and told us we'd need to go home if we left or we'd get into trouble.
