Woman Discovers A Hole Behind Her Bathroom Mirror – Decides To Go In And Finds An Entire Apartment

Woman Discovers A Hole Behind Her Bathroom Mirror – Decides To Go In And Finds An Entire Apartment

ADVERTISEMENT

On Wednesday, the TikToker Samantha Hartsoe began the four-part saga of her investigation into the gaping hole hidden behind her bathroom mirror. It all started when she came back from a hiking trip and noticed that her bathroom was really cold. “It was weird, because I don’t have a vent that I know of in there that blows cold air.”

What followed after in her rented three-bedroom (plus the mystery extra space) apartment on Roosevelt Island that she shares with two roommates has been likened to a script from the films Candyman and Parasite. So when Samantha realized the air is coming from the mirror area, she decided to lift it and see what’s up.

Little did she suspect, it was an entire other apartment accessible through the generous hole. And so the video investigation into the weird and thrilling discovery began. She posted the clips on TikTok and they went viral, amassing millions of views, with part 1 alone being watched a whopping 8.7M times.

So let’s see what the whole buzz is all about, which will likely make you check your bathroom mirror immediately.

    26-year-old Samantha’s videos blew up all over social media in the past day, as her 4-part investigative saga captured the imagination of many. People likened the apartment behind the mirror to horror movies like Parasite and Candyman, while others said they would have never had the guts to go into that hole.

    So she realized the cold wind was blowing from the direction of the mirror

    Samantha would have never found the hole in the wall, if not for the cold weather in her apartment. “It was weird, because I don’t have a vent that I know of in there that blows cold air,” she explained to the press.

    @samanthartsoeseriously never would I have expected to find this… and I documented all of it #mystery #fyp #nyc #secret #foryou #apartment #storytime♬ Mysterious – Andreas Scherren

    It’s the mysterious hole!

    ADVERTISEMENT

    That’s when her eyes fell on a draft from the mirror hanging over the bathroom sink. At that point, she noticed that the mirror was not quite connected to the wall and the cold air beneath it felt suspect. So she lifted the mirror only to discover there was no wall beneath it, but a dark hole gaping in the wall, and the air was coming straight from it.

    So Samantha decided it would be best to investigate the weird finding further

    ADVERTISEMENT

    And while you’d expect it to be a niche with a wall somewhere further inside, there was no such a thing. Samantha soon realized there’s an entire empty space the size of a room that she felt an urge to investigate.

    The suspicions turned out to be true, but it wasn’t just a sole room she had found; it was, in fact, an entire apartment with some “signs of life” just casually sitting there in the middle of New York.

    ADVERTISEMENT
    @samanthartsoeTRULY a new meaning to a “hole in the wall” #mystery #nyc #apartment #secret #storytime #fyp #foryou♬ Oh No – Kreepa

    But it turns out, according to Samantha herself, even her building’s management doesn’t quite know what is going on with that odd vacant unit that could easily fit an entire family.

    And once she was there on the other side, things got pretty serious. Talking to Curbed, she remembered thinking: “I have to find my way out of here,” and added: “I have to go back through that hole, which is pretty much impossible, or I have to find the exit of this place, which means I have to, at this point, explore it all.”

    And… signs of life detected!

    It turns out, there’s a whole other apartment there

    As she looked around the place, it became clear: it’s not a niche, not even a room, it’s a three-bedroom apartment with its windows open, which, as it became obvious, was a source of a cold draft.

    ADVERTISEMENT

    It’s not entirely clear what’s the purpose of the apartment, but Samantha believes it’s probably uninhabitable.

    “I’m not sure if it was being renovated or if it is empty. It’s really old, and nobody’s been in there a while. The shower-bathroom area is all piping—there’s no actual bathtub or toilet. The floor, and what I think would be the kitchen, was ripped up.”

    So her landlord’s phone is about to get a fun call

    ADVERTISEMENT
    @samanthartsoecrawled through a wall for this mystery so enjoy the finale 🕵🏻‍♀️ #mystery #nyc #apartment #secret #storytime #storytime #fyp #foryou♬ Mysterious – Andreas Scherren

    After the investigation was over, she managed to find a different way back into her own place. According to Curbed, she exited that apartment through the main door, which led her to a hallway elsewhere within her apartment complex.

    As Samantha had to make her way through her building to get back to her own apartment, it suggested the apartment was, in fact, not nextdoor, as some viewers assumed.

    But many people found Samantha’s odd discovery spine-chilling

    That only happens in movies. If you're looking at a two-way mirror, you can tell because the reflection is much poorer in quality than a normal bathroom mirror.

    I thought this thing was really common in the US? A bit like the undivided attic spaces in Victorian terraced houses here in the UK?

    M O'Connell

    This is completely common. The wall she went through is a "wet wall" which contains all the plumbing for the two back-to-back apartments. It really simplifies construction and maintenance. The holes are either there from the removal of in-wall medicine cabinets, or were left intentionally to service exhaust fan venting, or the plumbing stack itself.

    That’s super cool! Not a lot you can do but close up the windows, lock the doors and such. I don’t think I’d be able to sleep at night if I didn’t clean that place up and maybe slap some drapes up or something so it isn’t so freezing. NYC is cold enough as it is.

    I'd get a half-sheet of drywall and patch it myself, but not everyone would want to go to that trouble. Best to contact the landlord and request it.

    I had a dream like this. There is a closet in which things like towels are stored, but there is a white panel of wood beneath the bottom shelf. I dreamed that it opened up to reveal another house, beneath this one! It was huge, one story, but fully furnished. I dreamed that it was like three times the size of the house on top. I think about this dream alot.

    I would have definitely explored it. I explored several abandoned buildings as a kid, including a bunker with WWII ammounition boxes (emptyy, no worries). Big hurray for the 1980s where horror movies were not on tv and my explorations where a bit creepy but not mindboggelingly scary.

    I'm not sure if it's a butterfly effect kind of thing, but I think I will send this link to my BFF who will probably say I caused it. The first Candyman movie came out when we were juniors in high school and the piano part of the score I couldn't stop playing it I'm kind of a jerk so I kept doing it cuz it freaked everybody out and somehow almost 30 years later I started playing that the other night when we were hanging out she said "Just, don't DO that-cuz I'm going to go home and someone's going to be in an apartment behind my bathroom mirror like Candyman.... " Actually just don't say that four more times in a row.. m

    This story seems fake to me. The "I can't heat my apartment because there's wind coming" part doesn't make sense and nobody enters like that to another, unknown place because you simply don't know if someone's living there. She knew all along, that's why she made the story into several parts.

    This is called breaking and entering. You live in an apartment. What did you expect was going to be next door to you? The only real issue is the shoddy constuction of the apartment that aparently allows you to break into the neighbouring property. It is also a fire risk, as it could allow a fire to spread between apartments.

    That only happens in movies. If you're looking at a two-way mirror, you can tell because the reflection is much poorer in quality than a normal bathroom mirror.

    I thought this thing was really common in the US? A bit like the undivided attic spaces in Victorian terraced houses here in the UK?

    This is completely common. The wall she went through is a "wet wall" which contains all the plumbing for the two back-to-back apartments. It really simplifies construction and maintenance. The holes are either there from the removal of in-wall medicine cabinets, or were left intentionally to service exhaust fan venting, or the plumbing stack itself.

    In a rental market as tight as New York City has, why on earth would someone leave an apartment vacant for a long time?

" Actually just don't say that four more times in a row.. m

    for real though I'd be knocking down a wall or two and having an extra large place, I'd rennovate my damn self. I'd be the only one with a huge apartment. I'd then make a "hidden" door just in case the landlord did pop in. lol

    I'd start renovation. Make a fake door into there. Start using it. Bolt that door to common hallway. Extra space. And when leaving make sure to find next tenant of your place an let them know about it. Who doesn't need closet or sleeping area??? Make ur bathroom jack n Jill an rent out that space!

    Because to do that, they would have shattered her mirror. It's not possible to grab it and lower it carefully from the other side.

    This story seems fake to me. The "I can't heat my apartment because there's wind coming" part doesn't make sense and nobody enters like that to another, unknown place because you simply don't know if someone's living there. She knew all along, that's why she made the story into several parts.

    it looks like a twister came through, and they did not fix that room. it would be $1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 to fix that. in other words, infinity money to fix it.

    This is called breaking and entering. You live in an apartment. What did you expect was going to be next door to you? The only real issue is the shoddy constuction of the apartment that aparently allows you to break into the neighbouring property. It is also a fire risk, as it could allow a fire to spread between apartments.
