I'll go first: When I was at school, someone started a rumour that I was secretly a member of a cult. NO IDEA why they thought that. I guess it was just because I was quiet? I will never know.

What about you guys?

Hope this isn't too dark. I have a large scar on my face, an "accident" that happened from an abusive relationship years ago. He was terrible and mean. We divorced. A long time ago. He died last year. Recently a coworker asked about the scar. I said "it was from my ex, but he's dead now"...now everyone in my workplace thinks I killed him. I didn't, lol, it was a heart attack, but nobody asked how he died, they just think I got revenge or something. I hadn't seen him in four years, the only reason I knew he had died is because my stepmom found the info on Facebook.

I thought of another one. I'm Black and American, and grew up with a white parent, at the time of this rumor, located in North Vancouver, BC. My mom had no idea how to deal with or teach me about my hair. Because hats aren't allowed in school, I would wear bandanas a lot because I was insecure about my hair. At age 13, I was pulled aside by my school counselor and questioned about gang activity.
Now North Van is not exactly gangland. We're talking upper middle class mostly white and Asian Canadians. Their perspective on me, a Black American who had lived in a handful of big American cities (I hadn't really but nobody knew what I was talking about if I said Ann Arbor, Ellisville, Boca Raton, etc but they knew Detroit, St Louis, Miami, LA, etc.) Was quite skewed.
I explained I wasn't in a gang but refused to explain why I always wore the bandana, because I was 13 and insecure af.
Since bandanas and other non hat head coverings weren't against dress code they couldn't stop me. My friends all started wearing bandanas in solidarity, (we each picked our own color, so we looked like the gayest gang ever) and the whole school was convinced we were in a gang. Which somehow made us cool?
We went from being social nobodies to being the main subject of conversation and the ultimate goal for gaining an invite to hang out.
I didn't really realize that, and had spent weeks getting the nerve up to ask a cute girl to hang out, and when I finally did it, she practically hyperventilated out super awkward yes, then ran and told her friends all excited that she'd gotten an invite to hang out with me and "the gang".
But her parents wouldn't let her, and suddenly no one was allowed to hang with me at all, which only increased my "street cred".

Oh the power of a rumour! Rumours abound so thickly about everyone and everything on the internets that it is hard to know who to believe. But let me tell you, I would have wanted to "hang with the gang".

Apparently I died in the ninth grade back in 1996 when I was 15 years old. I was away from school on other matters for about 2 months, and I didn't know about this until I went back to school. But yeah there was a rumour that I had a brain tumour and that I had passed away. I have no idea where that rumour started, nor who came up with it originally, but it spread like wildfire all around the school and even hobby circles. Boy, it sure was fun going back...

I'm still alive guys.

My ex, mother of my oldest daughter whom I have FULL custody of, attempted to spread rumors that I was abusing my children. She called child services on me over 10 times in one year and sent over 1000 emails to me in less than a 3 month period, and she owes about $20K support, but I am the bad guy because society seems to think a father cannot raise 3 children on their own. (The courts refuse to file charges against her, even with evidence, because a man can't be harassed by a woman!)

Happened in my teenage years. We were three girls who hang around all the time, mostly bc we didn't had any other friends.

Then 10th grade came and a classtrip to Italy.
We got into a huge fight, long story short the third girl (lets name her Dorothy) quit our friendship with me and the other girl (lets name her Bonnie)

So Dorothy decided to share the info that Bonnie and me we're satanists, went to graveyards at midnight and s**t.

Long story short, Bonnie and me grew really close but didn't speak to Dorothy for the rest of the year.

A friend of mine was in an open relationship. He hooked up with multiple people, and his girlfriend hadn't at all. When I met his girlfriend (she's bi) it was instant attraction, but we were very Victorian about it, lots of longing glances and hands brushing and deep conversations about life and society. We hadn't so much as kissed. Then suddenly the rumor mill had it that I'd stolen his girlfriend and we were running away to Hawaii together. I guess he heard us talking once about how we both loved Hawaii and would love to go sometime, but missed the part of the conversation that included me talking about how well he'd fit in with my family there, assuming he'd come with as well since he was important to both of us. Anyway, he'd gotten jealous, thrown a fit, demanded she date some other girl he picked out instead of me, then when she broke things off with him because he was being a hypocrite and a jerk, he went and spread that rumor. She and I decided not to date because of the drama, but stayed close friends.
For several years everyone thought we were a couple, and about once a month someone would approach me to tell me they'd seen my gf on a date with someone else, and I'd I have to explain that we weren't dating.

I also had a reputation for being extremely promiscuous even though I am asexual and rarely have sexual partners. I just have a lot of deep friendships with cute queer girls we cuddle a lot. My friends would be complaining that they hadn't gotten laid in weeks or months and then they'd ask me and I'd be like ... Oh, idk, a couple years? And they'd all be shocked. Every time. Then they'd ask "What about *Hawaii girl* You guys have been on and off for ages." and I'd have to again explain that we'd liked each other but never actually dated or hooked up.

TLDR: I injured myself by accident and people blamed my best friend for no good reason.

When I was in the last year of high school, my best friend (I'm female, he's male) came to my house in the afternoon for something, and as I went to open the door for him I was skipping down the stairs and managed to miss the last one. Fell, and even though it was a tiny fall I managed to tear the ligament in my ankle. So by the next day I was sporting a big plastic splint so I wouldn't break the ankle while the ligament was healing.
I didn't think much of the whole thing, it was a small injury that didn't really cause a problem, I just had to be a bit careful when walking for a while. But I noticed in the next few days that people are looking at us differently. I could not put my finger on it exactly but something felt off.
At the same time I used to have one on one meetings with one of my teachers who was helping me with some extra work to facilitate me getting into the uni of my choice. So a few days after my fall I went to our next scheduled meeting and we started working. He also seemed to be a bit uncomfortable, like everyone else around me lately. Then after about half an hour he finally solved the mystery when he asked if it was true that my friend pushed me off the stairs...
Apparently that was the rumour that was going around and everyone took it at face value, and they were very mad at my friend. It was not suspicious to anyone that I was still friends with him, we were behaving like nothing happened - because nothing happened! It took quite a while for the poor guy for people to start looking at him without dismay again. Even if I tried to explain to anyone that I was just a clumsy moron and he was still outside the house when it even happened, they just sighed and looked at me with a "you poor thing, still defending him!" kinda look...

I used to live with a much older female friend of mine (she was in her late forties, I was 19 at the time). She had spare room that she didn't use, I was a broken student so I was very grateful for an opportunity to rent something much cheaper than on the market.
Shortly after I started hearing two stories about why I am living with her. First version was that I am her long-estranged daughter. Second - that we are lesbian lovers, which maybe even would make some sense, except of the fact that at the both of us were in relationships and were very open about them.
Rumours stopped after a year or so (I was living there for few years) but... well, it was around that time when I finally lost hope in humanity.

Back in elementary school, I always had very long hair. Being the only boy who had long hair, the other children had to think of a reason that my hair was so long. I am in a German so called "Gesamtschule", a middle+high school of middle level.

It started at the end of the 9th grade in June 2019 when lessons were cancelling (if first or last) or substituted (others in the middle, 2nd - next to last) much. In one week every 1st lesson was cancelled but I went to the library to get books. After the 3rd day of scanners crashing I got accused of being a demon by the librarian.

10th grade started, September 2019. The last wednesday before autumn holidays the first and last lessons were cancelled. The other 3 in the middle were all "Betreuung", German for "supervision classes". That meant we were sitting in the cafeteria under supervision but no new things were taught. We could do what we wanted, so I read the manga Blue Exorcist and learnt for a Latin test. The supervisor said: "There is the demon of the 10th grade!!"

After I took the next volumes of Blue Exorcist the librarian banned me from the library for the rest of the quarter which were only 2 days. In the next quarter the librarian has changed because the other one was pregnant. After that the library PC broke again my librarian accused me of demon magic and banned me till Christmas. I read the library rules which did not ban "demons" and told that my class teacher. The class teacher unbanned me from the library because I did not break any rules.

One time in Chemistry a boy who kept stealing things wnt to my group table and stole everyone's thing except me. He said that he does not want to get any curses.

In Music class in December 2019 it was so loud that I got headache and when I returned 3 minutes before end, my teacher said: "There is the devil!".

After New Year when I returned my books my librarian screamed: "the former librarian is pregnant and has scarlet fever! Stop cursing her child! You demon!". At the end of January 2020 we had to do a poll about what we plan after grade 10 on the Internet. The PCs did not work. We could sometimes not enter the Internet.

Another class also complained about the computers and they blamed me for being a demon. In French we had to do a test on the Internet but it also crashed. In thenext French lesson they accused me of crashing the Internet.

After a corona break the 10th graders got in Math, German and English preparation for central exams after 10th grade. In English the teacher had to be subbed due to being 60+. The substitution called me "nerd" because I was the only one who did homework.

In those 3 tests I got an A.

11th grade in the "Oberstufe", similar to highschool but both were in 1 building, started and it went normally till January 2021. After that we had till April 2021 remote learning. When we returned my Philosophy teacher asked everyone how much weight they got. After I said, I lost 4 kilos they accused me of demonic witchcraft. 1/4 of the lessons in Philosophy was offtopic talk.

It stopped now in 12th grade

Not so exciting, but for a small village I live in, it's huge. My husband owns a business. We were together for a few years before we got married and I helped him with his business. We decided to get married - reception was garden party type. Not too formal. Since I'm 14 years younger than he us, I'm surely a gold-digger, and I'm pregnant for sure, because we're getting married, right? Doesn't matter that we lived together for few years already. Imagine the shock on old ladies faces, when after a year there is still no baby 😂

At first I was just not interesting enough to be bullied when I was younger. I had 1 friend. That's all. Everything was fine. Then my friend had an car accident. He now needed a wheelchair and got popular for being so strong. I didn't mind. I was happy for him because he got a lot new friends.
But at this time the rumors about me started.
You need to now, we both grew up together. Our moms are very close friends and we were basically raised as siblings.
But one of my best friends new friends didn't like me. God knows why. I didn't even knew him until he started hanging out with us.
He spread the rumor, that I just hang out with my best friend, because he was popular now and that I just help him because I want a piece of the fame cake.
(my friend and I still make jokes about this specific rumor)

Since then I got bullied. My friend said always, that we grew up together and know each other for our whole lives, but this didn't matter for the bullies. My friend never left my side in school since then. It was cute but also made it worse when I had classes without him.

One day, I needed to help him pee. It was no big deal, I just followed him to the boys bathroom and hold him up, so he could stand while doing his business. The bully must have seen it. Because since then everyone said I was into pee and would even pay the boys to see them peeing and drink it out of the toilet!
If this is your kink, do what you like, but as a 14 year old girl it was pure hell that everyone said that! They even faked pictures of me licking toilets! I had a very long talk with the teachers about that. How unhygienic this is and that there are lots of better ways to get the boys attention and stuff.
I was crying, told them that it's all a lie and even outed myself as lesbian. I didn't even talked to my family about it! But no one believed me, except my best friend.

We both changed school after that. And it happened 10 years ago, but sometimes this still happens.
2 years ago the bully found out my phone number and wrote it on a public toilet door whit the caption "you want a s**t for golden shower fun call me"
The police isn't doing anything, but my friend and my family is always by my side.

I'm a writer, and used to be a very popular fan fiction author. Someone in one of the fandoms I wrote for started a rumor that I was, in fact, the original creator of the manga I wrote fan fiction for and that I was pretending to be a fan author in order to "spy" on other fans.

Ridiculous? Yes, but more ridiculous is the response it garnered -- I wound up being harassed extensively, to the point where it was seriously threatening my mental health. We're talking hundreds of nasty e-mails, being publicly blasted on blogs, having a lot of my stories (for all fandoms, not just that one) getting reported and taken down on various archives, etc. As a result, I wound up retiring from writing for five years and still haven't fully returned.

I (despite claiming to be single) have allegedly been seen with several different women at different times, taking them to a nearby exclusive resort.

As this is a rather expensive, selective-entry resort, none of the people spreading this rumor had actually been inside to realize that it was just a country club with private residences, and *not* a hotel (though some basic research might have cleared this up for them). When I was told about this rumor I laughed, then explained that 1) serial tennis-partnering wouldn't be much of a scandal and 2) I'm way too cheap to make a first date out of that place.

this happened while attending a statewide conference for law enforcement in the district attorney's office about 25 years ago. i was there with my colleagues doing the regular conference things such as attending lectures, meeting people from other counties, networking, etc.. i kind of noticed after the first day that a lot of male counterparts were making an effort to introduce themselves during the meet and greets but didn't really think that much about it. however, something started to not feel right when a couple of them asked to walk me back to my room which i always used the excuse that, because i was sharing it with another coworker, i didn't want to disturb them. i mentioned this to my room mate and she started to giggle and tell me that a couple of people had asked some of them who i was when i had given a presentation. it seems that someone - i never found out who - had told someone that i was fairly new to the district attorney's office but i was studying to become a sex therapist. no, the reality was that i had already gotten my degree in behavioral science with a focus on human sexuality. so, somehow that had gotten misconstrued along the lines of communication and it explained the interest of some of the people as well as some of the odd looks i was getting. i had a good laugh over this and just felt that it would give some people an interesting story to tell when they got home/

The dumbest rumour I've heard about me was that, while sitting in the library with my friends, during lunch, my boyfriend was f*ingering me. And that I was holding back moans.
This rumour was started by a girl who was sitting at the table with us. Who had also been my friend.
My boyfriend had been sitting next to me, and he did have his hands under the table, but he was playing a game on his phone.
Luckily not many people believed it, but it was still embarrassing.

This is a long one. I was walking around the school, and I noticed like everyone whispering about me, and I was all; "They're not talking about me... are they...?" So, I look at this group of people who are like walking behind me, doing these stupid facial expressions. I was like; "Uhh, can I help you?" And they go like; "Oh I think Mr. Jill is ready for another lesson, just you two (if you get what I mean!)." So they do these humping poses, and are faking moaning all because I had a tutor with him! He's married and has 2 young children. So, the rumour only lasted a week, thankfully. But, I still get questions from this day asking if I actually lost my virginity to a teacher.

That my brother and I are twins and I am the dumb one. We have different birthdays. Mine is in July and his is in September. We were also born different years hence the reason we were a year apart in school. He was born in 1985 and I was born in 1987.

27th of May, I got bombarded with messages and phonecalls from someone I used to be friends with, asking me if I was alive. Turns out someone was saying I died the Wednesday before at the pub said ex-friend's mom works at and they got worried. I have no clue who said this or why, I'll just assume they're someone who bullied me in highschool and is still stuck in that time, I guess

Long time ago I worked in a resort and lived in the company housing. On one summer a girl moved in next to my room. We barely talked because we worked at different parts of the resort and mostly our work schedule, I worked nights and she worked mornings. She was dating her co-worker, I knew they guy but never talked to him. Their relationship only lasted for a couple months or so. Someone told me she had been telling people that I "stole" her boyfriend. 😃 I was dating someone else by that time.

Did you have to come out after those rumors came out just to let everyone know they were wrong?

I was a quiet and kinda weird kid going into high school (I was bullied a decent amount in 8th grade and decided the best way to not be mocked was to just not say anything unless answering a question in class), and somehow my freshman year a rumor started going around that I was planning to shoot up the school (this was in the mid-aughts, so there wasn't a publicized shooting every other week). On the bright side, this was what made me realize that I had to actually interact with people, so I joined the drama club and made some actual friends.

At the beginning of my senior year in high school, 2 things happened. First, the guidance counselor called me in, told me I was first in my class and that I had actually completed all my credits and could graduate early. Second, my long time boyfriend broke up with me and I started hanging out with other kids who did not go to my school. So, 40 years later, I run unto an old friend from high school and she told me there was a big rumor that I had gotten pregnant by this specific guy, and that I had been sent off to have the baby and never came back. That was one of the common paths for pregnant teens at that time. I actually just lived at home and worked in nearby city until I could go to college.

A couple weeks ago, this kid in my social studies class was acting like a total a hole, so I got up and walked over to him. He stepped forward to push me, and we both fell to the ground. It turns out he had been stabbed with my pencil. Kids kept saying I got suspended (I did not btw.) for punching, stabbing, and the sticking his head in the fish tank. The rumor was spread by a kid who got a week suspension for tackling a a kid and saying racial slurs. What an idiot

Oh there have been a couple.

1.) I got really sick my senior year of of HS. It started out with mononucleosis (still no idea where I got it) which weakened my system so as I was recovering I also got a cold, the flu, and an ear infection. THEN, I caught the flu AGAIN only the gastro type. Needless to say, I was sick and miserable for a long time. My classmates all decided that I was dead and "RIP" posters went up in classrooms.

2.) When I was 20, I broke up with a boyfriend, then the phone calls started. 1 mutual friend would call me and say that my ex's new GF heard that I was "super upset" that he "dumped me" and that I "wanted to fight her". The whole thing was just so surreal that I laughed my a*s off every time before finally telling them to stop calling me.

3.) Probably the biggest one? That I would have a psychotic break of some sort when my mother died. We'd lived together my entire life (it worked for us), which apparently other people couldn't understand. I heard from friends, neighbors, even my (now) ex-coworkers and bosses that they "worried for my mental health". I have no idea where they got that idea from, other than, spending your life with a parent is apparently deemed "weird, strange, unusual" and therefore it MUST mean that you're mentally unstable overall. My Mom's been gone for a few years now, so they can all kiss my a*s because I'm just fine.

Kids at my school thought I was a Russian spy. I DONT HAVE AN ACCENT. I have absolutely no idea why people thought this . And they were serious. A girl came up to me and asked “ what’s it like in russia?” Completely serious and I died laughing and somehow my reaction only made their superstitions worse. Then they thought maybe I wasn’t a Russian spy, but I was so smart and tall because I’m secretly a 21 yr old retained student. Welcome to 8th grade, pandas.

Apparently I'm some kind of psycho stalker. One of my ex-girlfriends spread that rumor, I have no idea why she did that, but it stuck.

For years around the club scene in Baltimore/DC I had the roughest time dating since most women I met were hesitant to even get to know me, all because of that rumor.

Eventually that rumor spread around the scene so much, that I was apparently stalking women I had never even met!

So I left. Didn't even tell anyone. I just Keyser Söze'd right out of the scene.

I met a neighbor after they moved in. We got to talking and I mentioned the gossip. Well, they went on about a junkie neighbor and how they should be careful. All I could say was, let me guess. The neighbor is male. I knew well and good who it was. And who this poor man was talking about. When I finally introduced myself proper, I added “as you can see I am no monster”. He felt awful and I told him not to, I’d been hearing all about me for years. Made him laugh a bit, and now? We get along nicely, and I get a great deal on farm fresh eggs. (As for the talkative neighbor? I didn’t care until he targeted my son - THATS where I draw the line). PS: I am originally from N. NJ so you can guess how that will go *S*

so my friends let's say Martin and Lashaunda knew someone who rode their bus in 5th grade.

they had something against Martin and Lashaunda & for who knows what reason had something against them. and they did everything in their power to make Martin and Lashaunda's life more miserable.

then one day they started a rumor that Martin and Laushanda were in a relationship and did some very sus stuff that I don't want to put up here but long story short, it spread fast. I feel really bad for Martin and Lashuanda.

Called my friend an idiot in Ancient Sumerian because my P.E. teacher was very serious about even petty insults and would have given me detention if I had done it in English.
Girl in my class heard and told everyone in the entire school that I was some sort of 'Satanic witch' and I had 'cursed him/hexed/hypnotised' with a 'spell'.
I told her that it wasn't a curse, merely an insult said in a dead language. She didn't believe me, which okay, I can kind of get it. She was very sheltered and had probably never heard somebody talk like that before. And it does sound pretty strange ["Zae sangdu nutukumen"]. But she wouldn't even hear me out. Took me ages to convince the rest of my class that I wasn't a witch, merely a nerd who really likes useless languages.

Oh, and did I mention that this was in high school?

I grew up in Winslow, Arizona, a small town on Route 66. I was a senior in high school 1972 when the song "Take It Easy" by the Eagles came out and put us on the map. Over the years there has been much speculation about who the "Girl my Lord in a flatbed Ford" was. I heard a lot of "maybe's" over the years: usually a popular beautiful girl (I was just an average hippie nobody back then). On night in 2000 I was having drinks at a local club and a girl said "I heard it was you!" Cracked me up, I'd never heard that one!

That my last pregnancy was not my now ex husbands kid. A ‘friend’ had been flirting with and hinting around that she was interested in my husband for years and he always blew her off, etc. While I was visiting my sister in a different state, my former friend told my ex husband that I had confessed to her that I had an affair and was actually pregnant to a 62 year old bass player for a local band whom I also happened to work with at the time. My ex believed her for a minute until he realized that I got pregnant while on vacation with him and my extended family. And yes he’s my ex husband because he chose to sleep with her and then ask me about my supposed affair. He begged me to forgive him but cheating is not forgivable in my book. We are great co parents and friends but once a cheater always a cheater so there’s no going back now!

After just meeting someone they say to me; "Aren't you they guy who was involved in hacking your high school and the secret police had to investigate?" - I had to set the record straight. First, why would the secret police (CIA/FBI/etc) be involved? Secondly, yes there was a "hack" at the school I went to, and I was blamed at first. I had founded the schools computer club and was there on a weekend with my access card. On monday the school noticed that they no longer had access to the main server. So they blamed me at first. Turns out that their own admin had typed the wrong password enough times to lock himself out.

Example: when it got back to me the rumor was now I was rating people and teachers and if anyone got in my way I would beat’em up! How Stupidly Stupid!

I have never drank an alcoholic drink in my life and I never will. I won't even eat food if there is even the tiniest trace of alcohol in it.
One day dad made up a barbeque and we were sitting outside drinking and eating when our new neighbour walked down the lane next to our back garden. Mum and dad were drinking red wine and I was drinking Ribena a blackcurrant cordial which is the same colour as the wine mum and dad were drinking. The look on the neighbour's face was priceless when she saw me drinking Ribena from a pint glass, as we guessed she must have thought I was drinking red wine from a pint glass and we had a good laugh about it. Fast forward a few days and I met her in the supermarket and she came up to me and said that she had been asking around if I had a drinking problem. Of course I said "No I haven't". I told I just don't drink alcohol at all. She said that she saw me drinking a pint of wine the other day and I had to explain to her that it wasn't wine but Ribena and anyway if it was wine I would hardly be drinking it out of a wine glass. She walked away without saying much so I don't know if she believed me or not. I saw another neighbour later that afternoon and asked her if our new neighbour had said if she had said anything about all this and she said "yes" and she had laughed and told her that I was a strict teetotaler and would never drink alcohol. She finished by saying she has been asking around about you but if I or anyone else hear anything about we'll put them right. " She must have done as I didn't hear anything back but I went on to drinking orange juice when I was outside just in case.

In between periods, people heard me sobbing in the bathroom (I'm sensitive to loud noises), and they thought somebody had called me a nerd.
