Dick Clark once said "Music is the soundtrack of your life." Tell us the first song that made you light up and swear fealty to the Gods of aural artistry.

"Memory" from the 1982 Cats sdtk. I went to see the musical concert when I was about 3 or 4. It was the best thing I had ever heard and this song just always moved me and has had a special place in my heart since then. I would dance around the house to the whole cassette.

Mine was Strangelove by Depeche Mode! LOL But here’s the backstory: I attended boarding school most my life that was pretty strict so I literally had no outside influence of any non-Religious music. So in 8th grade I transferred into public school & attended my first public school dance with a friend. They played Strangelove & I immediately was like ‘This is the coolest sound I’ve ever heard!’

These boots are made for walking by Nancy Sinatra. I remember being a very young and just thinking this song was so fun and cool. Still love it and the music video is fire.

Meet the elements by they might be giants. (They have a separate artist profile on Spotify for their kids' music, if you go looking for it). It's not as sophisticated as other people's on this list but my family always played that album or dan zanes' family dance. When this song came on I'd do frantic, elaborate dance moves up and down the length of the kitchen and make the cd skip. I still know all the words and the actual science mnemonics still help me. In second grade when I was first assessed for autism I got really far in the science portion- I am not a savant by any means but I still remember the lady with the triangle flip book asking me what makes iron rust and I knew it was oxygen! That album was my life.

My father would sing in the barn as he milked the cows. One of the very first songs I remember is Sweet Betsy From Pike. He was happy and I loved hearing him sing songs and tell me stories about things in his childhood. I looked it up on YouTube and a version of it is actually there- a Disney version of the old time song. It has the same tune though not all the words are the same. I prefer the one I can still hear in my mind after all these years.

I was I think five. I had this little crystal radio that could pick up some am stations. It was night and I was under covers, the song Downtown played. For some reason it creeped me out. A few days later I had a neighbors folk’s play the Brandenburg concerto by Bach. I was transformed and enthralled.

For me, it wasn't a specific song, although if I had to narrow it down, it would be Hypercolour by Ali Barter. It was more that I found there was a huge amount of music out there I never heard. As a kid, my dad would listen to the radio (golden oldies stuff mostly) and I liked it but never thought about it further. I was a 90s kid, so at school all the kids were into the Spice Girls and stuff and I just turned my nose up at it. My whole school life I was at odds with what my peers listened to, but didn't access anything else and so thought I just didn't like music. Then I moved out with my brother and we were both unemployed for a while and he was in the habit of listening to what I guess is considered the 'youth', non-mainstream radio station, out loud for large parts of the day. I discovered there was a lot of music out there I really did enjoy, and it was lots of different songs from different genres. Now I listen to anything and everything, but still not a lot of mainstream pop like my friends.
