When you don’t want to go to work, or if you’re sick, and you have to call the boss, what do you call it?

1. Calling in?

2. Calling out?

3. Calling off?

4. Something else?

And where are you from? I want to know if it’s regional. Thanks!!

I say "calling in" a lot of the time. Calling in + whatever reason the boss will accept. It's mainly calling in sick, because I think "calling in lazy, tired and overworked" is a little too honest. (I'm from the Rocky Mountain region of the United States, where we all apparently have "western accents" and really really like the outdoors.)

Illinois, and for sickness when calling in, you say your taking the day off, when you are telling others you took the day off it is called a sick day, when you are taking day off for just a day off you tell the boss, I need the day off, when telling others you had the day off it's refered to as just a day off.
