Anything wild to nerve racking experiences!

My neighbor down the road. Three days ago. He was drunk. Thought he'd free a squirrel from a trap and cuddle the squirrel. The squirrel bit him in the jugular. I heard the screaming, responded as a good MD should.

And people ask why my first aid kit is the size of a carry-on bag. That's why.

The squirrel is fine. The guy is getting rabies shots atop the whole "graft to fix his jugular".

"Squirrel cuddling" sounds like a Darwin Award category. Lucky you were there to keep him from winning an actual Darwin award.

I'm a retired nurse and worked as an EMT before going into nursing. While doing EMT training, I went on my first ambulance ride. We were called to the scene where a motorcyclist had crashed into a metal fence. We stopped the ambulance about 30 feet from the victim, which was the closest we could park near him because he was off the road. I grabbed the "blue bag" (big back of medical gear), stepped out of the ambulance, tripped over something, and fell. I saw that I had tripped over the victim's leg. He was still 30 feet from me.

As much as I love motorcycles in theory, I'll never ride one since my wife worked as an EMT.

This happened when I was a camp counselor who taught horseback riding. In between the two afternoon classes, I heard a scream from the paddock and arrived to find both stablehands freaking out because one had a pitchfork through his left forearm. They hadn't been paying attention during horseplay and he swung it right onto the tines. This is the days before ubiquitous 911, so I carefully bundled him into the van and took him to the ER, pitchfork in place. He lucked out - the tines went right in between his forearm bones and missed tearing nerves, muscles and blood vessels. They stitched him up and gave him megadoses of antibiotics because of the manure on the tines. But other than that, he healed nicely.

My father -now retired- is a pediatric surgeon. He absolutely banned my siblings and me from playing with fireworks when we were kids. As I was a little older, around 15, he told me the reason: he had seen a little boy who was playing with firecrackers and had a bunch of those things in his pocket. Somehow, a random spark ignited them. The kid lost his genitals, I mean, the whole thing, gone, along with a ruptured bladder. My dad had to operate him several times, and apparently it was just enough for the kid to be able to pee properly.

Doc here. Guy comes in complaining of an abcess, get 20 a day no biggie. He has a sock with the end cut off covering his Arm. when I pulled down the sock to assess the abscess, there was no abscess. There was, in fact, no living tissue covering half of his arm. Just dried out exposed bone. Connected to, an apparently normal but not functioning hand. It's the only time in my career I got tunnel vision and almost passed out. And the guy just asked me if I thought we could make his hand work again.

Hmm now I really want to see what this looked like and also, if the hand could be saved.

Obligatory not me, but my father. He was called to a woman at a car wash who had managed to spray her forearm with the highly pressurized water hose. However, we still have no idea how it happened because it is made to prevent such accidents. The wand itself is so long it would be nearly impossible to hurt oneself with it. Very strange.
