Help, I just agreed to write 2000 words on jam or cream first on scones because long story short I'm stubborn so please just tell me!

Excuse my ignorance. I'm a Canadian that has had scones once and didn't get jam or cream.
What is the significance of which comes first?

I can never remember which way round I prefer, so I always do one half jam first and the other cream first. I remember what I prefer and why, then completely forget again.

You could look at it from a food science angle, it should be cream first. The reason being, you create a gradient of both sweetness and texture.

Realistically though, if should depend on the quality of the cream and jam. The higher quality should be on top.

In actuality though, it's whatever you prefer.

I’m from china and I’ve only had scones once and had jam with it—i didn’t know that cream was even an option. My equally scone-less best friend has suggested cutting the scone in half like a sandwich and putting jam on one side and cream on the other. Since she also puts milk before the cereal, I don’t know how horrifying this might be to a scone eating person.
