I met my crush a few weeks ago and we got close really fast. I've noticed that they flirt with me a bit and whenever we're together they get close to me and hug me/hold my hands if I mention being cold. They're super sweet and I'm not sure if they feel the same way about me that I do about them. They once made a joke about something sounding like a date, and whenever I bring up them crushing on me as a joke they definitely don't deny it, but they do change the subject pretty quickly. I've been considering asking them if what we have is romantic or platonic, but I'm not sure if I should wait, or how to phrase it. Knowing my luck, they'll have zero interest in me, but we're both gay and it really does feel like they're into me. It's probably me projecting, but I'd really love y'alls advice. Thanks!

I think you should ask them because there’s not much that could go wrong (pretty much just awkwardness)

If you're not sure, I think a lot of the time it causes you a lot less stress to just ask. Maybe write out what you want to say in an online note and when you get up the courage to actually ask them, copy-paste the note into a message to them and send it before you can second-guess yourself.
If you're dead set on doing it in person, start it out with a phrase you can't go back on--like say, "hey I have a really important question" or something.

Ask a friend to ask them when you are not around and then that friend tells you what they told them

Thank you! Fortunately, thus post isn't necessary anymore- I told them how I feel on Thursday and were dating now

I’d say go for it! I have little to no relationship advice but I feel like nothing would go wrong apart from it being awkward for a while

If it helps at all with the liking me/not liking me thing, they have mentioned that they think ym hair looks great, usually whenever I'm saying that it's a mess (which is often cause it always is) and they told me today that they think freckles are cute, which I then replied to jokingly saying that I wish I had them, and they told me that I definitely did while also sort of blushing. I made a joke about me being very cute (look what do you expect it's what I do constantly) and they said that I am, but in a lighthearted/joking way. Idk what to think
