Trust me, I had to do this multiple times but just say that you don't want to be friends with them anymore or just drift more and more away from him.

Were you a couple before this? Can't you just ignore them? If they have become rude they might retaliate. That's the problem with people today, they can't let it go. In my own experience they are doing it on purpose so you will be the one to cut the relationship and they still smell like a rose and your friends will flock to him. You might be Back Burner status.
