Sometimes, by pure dumb luck, people have managed to get out of dangerous situations without intending to do so. Have you?

1985: I was supposed to sleep over at a friend’s house, but had to cancel due to a stomach bug. That night she and her sister were stabbed to death by an acquaintance that was high on meth. Her brother faked being dead after being stabbed and survived. Her sister’s baby was found ok in a closet. The killer is still in prison in California.

mid-80s walking out to my car in mall parking lot. got a very uncomfortable feeling so turned to see a panel van following me. at first thought it was trying to find a parking spot but then i heard the side panel open. i was just about to my vehicle when i turned & saw a guy squating inside. i changed directions & weaved through the cars back to the store where i asked them to call police. gave description of van & stayed there until then arrived. when they came they told me that they had found the vehicle still moving in the lot and that one of the guys had a record for rape and assault. they told me that i may have dodged a bullet by listening to my instincts.

I had a diabetic low behind the wheel once.
My first wife and I were coming home from buying a car for her for her birthday. We had been out most the afternoon. We were going to eat dinner once we got home. Approx. 25mins away. I stopped at a gas station to get me my Diet Dr. Pepper and a couple Caramello bars. This is what she described to me as we were driving home, her following behind me: My JEEP Cherokee was going along normal, then violently swerved, braked, dodged a few cars, veered to the left median and up on the guardrail then back down, through traffic all the way to the right side of the highway, then spun out and finally stopping. I woke up to the paramedics checking on me. First thing out of my mouth was "damn it! How'd my pop spill?" All I remember are taillights of the cars in front of me. This was during rush hour traffic. I didn't hit anyone and I was unscathed. I matrixed the hell out of that bullet!

When I lived in Boulder CO a million years ago I dated a guy who was, ahem, a casual dealer of the illicit substances type. He died from an overdose several months after I broke it off (because he was a, ya know, dealer), and the article in the Daily Camera said his body was found, unresponsive and the police found a kilo and most of another kilo of a certain powdery white substance that is not snow on his person. Here's where it gets fun! His connection, literally from Columbia shows up at my apartment door a week later. I was introduced to him, once, very briefly, at a party on Halloween night which was about 7 months prior to this incident. He knocked, I answered, he shoved in a put a glock in my mouth and asked me where his uh... possessions were. I pointed to the article which for some reason unknown to me at the time, maybe I was just sad, I had cut out and placed on the coffee table in my living room, and which stated his possessions were in the Boulder County PD evidence locker. So, he walks over, reads it, swears, and puts his gun away. Then he says to me, "You really kept your cool under pressure. You want a job?" I said, "No...thank you. I think I'd rather just forget you exist." (and I really cannot remember what he looked like, what his actual name is, how old he was, it's all blurry). So, he nods. Says, "Do I have to tell you what will happen if you say anything?" Head shakes no... He leaves. I immediately go to the bathroom and explosively evacuate from all orifices simultaneously in the shower. I looked cool at the time, but the reaction of my body tells a different story. Seriously glad this guy was disinterested in me. I hope almost 40 years is long enough that I can vaguely state this without a return visit...

I think I may have dodged a bullet when just 17. I was still living at home, but some firm sought a girl to take care of 2 dogs and a cat on a tour to the middle east. I liked animals and thought it sounded exciting so I tried to get the job. The talk went well, but I didn't get it, and was disappointed. A few weeks later the news were telling about how the leaders of the firm were being prosecuted because of human trafficking in young girls.

It was the day before mothers day and my dad decided to take me out shopping to get mum a gift (typical last minute dad). We were supposed to go in to our local town, but just as we arrived, dad decided that he'd drive to my grandma's village (about 40 minutes away) and get her a gift too and drop it off. That day there was a terrorist attack in our town (Warrington, England), we would have walked right in to it, two kids were killed and lots of people with serious injuries.

We argued,my gut told me to sit on the arm of the couch so I did,a few minutes later he threw the closest thing to him which were a pair of scissors. They hit my elbow and went in a few inches. I found out that had i not been sitting on the arm of the couch the scissors would have gone into my neck. So thankful I listened to my Gut.

Literally, myself and my wife, we having our last "us" holiday before we adopted our little girl. We went to Tunisia in 2015. On day two of our holiday we thought we would chill on the beach. Mid morning we walked down the coast to do some parasailing.

Whilst we were parasailing, the terror attacks took place and 38 tourists were killed. If we hadn't of gone parasailing at that time, we would have been on the wrong part of the beach at the wrong time. We were so lucky. The people who were sunbathing next to us were shot dead. Never forget and you never know when your time is up.

I was helping make supper by cooking ground beef, the beef my family bought when it was cooked it let out a lot of fat so we strained the grease out if it after cooking. It had just finished when my 5 year old brother walks in asking what I'm cooking. I tell him and go to get the sive out of the cabinet. I get a feeling to turn around and my brother is tipping the pan so he can see what's in it. Now my memory of this goes in slow motion because I can't comprehend how quickly I moved. I spun on my heel, and sprinted forward, grabbed my baby brother and scrambled backwards until we hit the wall. All we got were a few splashes that were warm, not boiling. The food was on the floor, but I'd rather that then a blind or dead brother! I just held him and cried. He had no idea what was happening but held still until I went to tell our parents what had happened.

Not totally sure eif this counts. I'll say it anyway. This guy showed up out of nowhere at our church and kept on coming back. For some reason, my 9-11 year old self seriously hated him, so I made sure to stay away from him (there was a close call when I was using the bathroom once).
Fast forward a few years, and my mom tells me he wanted to marry her (she was pregnant, and the guy had literally worked on our house with my dad).
I still think he was possibly interested in me and not my mom. Either way, he had very creepy vibes, and Ihe was a bullet I was too happy to dodge.

I started seeing my gynecologist when I was 23-years-old, and from my very first visit, I told her I was not going to have children. I had horrendous cramps and I really wanted to have my uterus removed, but no one will take a 20-year-old’s uterus out, assuming that there will be regret later. But by the time I was in my mid-30s, it was a different story, and after 13 years of always hearing the same answer, she finally cauterized my tubes. It was great! And then, in my mid-40s, I needed a sudden appendectomy, at which point she found that I had a virulent case of endometriosis, so a month or so later, my wish finally came true. It took me three or four months to stop tracking time and quit bracing myself for the extreme pain I would no longer have to endure.

Car crash in 1992 on an icy road. Was doing around 40 and taking it really slowly as I could see how bad the conditions were. I applied the brake and the car went into a spin anyway, hit a land rover coming the other way (this was a Ford Fiesta btw), the car started to roll then ended up back on its wheels on the grass verge facing the opposite way to where I was going. I got out of the car, had a cut ear (from flying glass) and a badly bitten tongue but when I looked back at my car it was literally a pancake. Even witnesses said that I looked like a "Rag doll being tossed around" during the accident.

Funny follow up story - A policeman who'd been sent out to measure any skid marks (there were none, the road was literally a sheet of black ice) slipped over on the ice and broke his pelvis, and ended up in the next gurney along from mine in the hospital while I was being checked out.

In 2006, when I was 17, I went out to Arkansas with an old boyfriend's family. We were shooting a .22 pistol and a .22 rifle. Stepdad was an old meth head and untrained with guns. I was taught gun safety and shot guns for almost a decade by my father. Dude keeps sweeping my body with the rifle and pointing it at me repeatedly. I get fed up and say, "The next time you point that thing at me, I'm going to rip it out of your hands and beat the sh** out of you." He does it again and I storm off into the house. The bolt gets jammed and he comes into the house. I'm so irritated, that I refuse to look at him and he starts hammering (with a hammer!) on the bolt. All of a sudden, boyfriend yells, "Hey! Quit pointing that thing at the back of my girlfriend's head!" "Oh, sorry man," he responds. Points it towards the kitchen and smacks it one more time. Gun goes off! Goes through the wall, through the kitchen cabinet, and breaks some dishes. Had to cover the damage with butterfly stickers and that man child was not allowed to touch another gun for the week.

Oh, yes, my time has come to share my own Bored Panda story.

This was about 10 years ago when I was in sophomore year of middle school. I was catching the bus to go to school in the morning. I was running late, and I saw the bus drive past. So I decided to let my parent drive me to school that day.

As we drove past, we noticed that the bus had crashed into several other cars, as well as people. As far as I'm aware, no one was killed but if I had caught the bus, I might not be alive right now.

Weird, huh.

In college, I decided to become a teacher, but I dropped my classes when I was struggling to catch up with the work, plus my financial aid ran out and I had no money to pay for the classes. I got myself a part time job while thinking about when I want to go back to school to continue and if I really wanted to saddle myself with debt from loans for school.

Fast forward 6 six later, I'm still working (after a few job changes) and the COVID-19 pandemic hit, which made teaching at schools a nightmare and caused many teachers to quit after they had already dealt with low pay, Karen parents, and other issues. Kind of glad I didn't go for that career path.

I joined for a variety of reasons. During a lull in a firefight in Iraq, I took my helmet off to wipe my soaked hair. There was a "swiiiiiiiiiiiiiiisssshhhhhhzzzzz" sound, no more than a foot from my ear. You can only hear the crack of the weapon if you're firing it or it's fairly close.

I worked nights at a home for the developmentally disabled. We were allowed to smoke in the back patio area, but not in the front of the home, as our management felt it looked bad. I occasionally broke the rule at night, as it's a small town, with no one to see. One night, around 2:00, I sat on the front porch, smoking. I saw a van pull into the driveway. Thinking it was my boss, I put out the cigarette in a potted plant and went back inside. Turned out it was the paper delivery. A couple hours later, I went back to the front porch. There was the plant, smouldering badly. A few holes had melted in the plastic pot. If I hadn't got out to the front to smoke again, I could have burnt the house down. After that night, I never smoked in the front again.

Yes, both. A neighbor, new to the military, accidentally discharged his gun, the bullet went through the floor of his 2nd floor apartment, right above us, and went straight into our floor by the door we were just about to go out of, as we were headed to work.
Dodged the literal bullet by a nano-second.
Figuratively, have dodged hundreds of bullets. Many of us likely have, and many don't even realize it.

Several years ago after MO passed concealed carry, my son and I were at a restaurant when an older gentleman walked behind my son up the steps to a raised seating area. Suddenly there was a loud bang, for some reason I threw myself down on my seat. I and some others called 911 then the gentleman told everyone that his gun fell out of his pocket and fired when it hit the floor. Thankfully it fired the other way otherwise it might have hit my son, as it was it just missed an employee doing dishes on the other side of the wall.

This is more like getting grazed by a bullet. About a few months ago, I accidently hit myself in the face with my car door. While my glasses took most of the impact (and somehow did not break), I still got a huge welt just above my eyebrow. I realized later that if I had been wearing contacts, it would have been more than just a huge bump on my face.

When I was 14, my dad started a bit family project to turn the old barn in our backyard into a new barn with video games and an entertainment center... Generally just a place to have fun. We were not farmers, so we didn't need a functional barn.

We had some family friends helping us with this. The son was my age, and the daughter was about 3 to 5 years older than me. I had a MAJOR crush on her. Today, I barely remember her name. I think it was "Cari"? Maybe "Carly"? Idk. Anyway, I wear my contacts when I'm trying to look good, and I've done that ever since I was 12. Not sure why I thought wearing contacts would impress this woman, especially since she wore glasses, but whatever. For some reason, one day, I felt like glasses were the right way to go, not contacts.

Fast-forward to me trying to pull a nail free from a board. Nail bursts out of the board, all I see is a flash of steel, and I fell on my back. The other family's son started looking me over while I started hyperventilating.

Dead in front of my right eye was a large chip taken out of my glasses. That nail would have gone through my right eye. My mom walked by, told me to walk it off and stop laying around, so my friend and I took a short walk while I calmed down.

For some reason, seeing a boy who was 3 or 5 years younger than her have a panic attack at almost losing an eye did not make (Cari/Carly/Caty/what's-her-name) fall for me.

On the upside, I have two eyes that I am very fond of.

My dad was sitting in bed that morning and was planning on going into town that morning. He was talking to someone on the phone and when he was done I went in to see if he wanted anything before he left for town but found him dead in the bed. He had had a massive brain aneurysm. He was alive one minute and dead the next. Our doctor said it would have been like someone turning off a light switch. An hour later he would have been in his car going into town. Had he had his aneurysm then he would have lost control of his car on a busy main road and potentially crashed his car into somebody else's car and caused a terrible accident. Having the aneurysm when he did prevented that from happening.

He flashed his brights into the tunnel as we were approaching the entrance and looked directly at me. I told my friends it was suspicious, but they brushed it off. Then as we stepped in the tunnel, a man appeared at the other end, just standing there, and the driver got out of his car to follow us in. I said quietly but firmly to my friends, “Turn around and walk out now.” As we passed him, the driver said, “Is there a problem?” I said, “No problem at all.” We went straight into into the nearest restaurant, waited a little while, and then took a different route home. When I was seventeen, I got my first car. A little Corona about 8 years old. That was in 1983, so not too much safety technology there. I was driving home from school on a back road. It was raining and I was going about ten miles over the 45mph limit. I came over the crest of a hill and there were two little kids by the left side of the road, and their dog was in the middle of the road in my path. Of course, being an animal lover, I jammed on my breaks, and of course, the breaks on the little old thing locked, the car spun (luckily) to the right, flipped over, and smashed into the rock bank, all at 55mph. I remember sitting in the driver's seat and just feeling lifted up slightly from the seat, seeing the car spin around me, and I ended up sitting safe and sound, upright on the ceiling inside the car. I walked away on my own two feet with just a banged and bruised forehead and knee. I'll never forget the feeling, when the car spun around me, of being lifted up and cradled and surrounded by a soft warm breeze.

I called the police and they said and I quote "If we responded to every threat we'd have no time for actual emergencies." FML. My response to that was "So if he comes back with a working gun and kills me and my toddler is playing in my blood next to my dead body THEN you'll do something?" S**t you not, she said "Yes ma'am if that happens call back and we will send someone out." I lost all hope in the justice system that day and bought a gun. Luckily Ex got his s**t together and learned to curb that anger. This was about 15 years ago he is NOT the same person anymore. He also doesn't drink anymore so that could be it. But yup....

I went to a Montessori school, so there were groups that you need to understand for this to make sense.
Toddler-18 months until you are 3 at start of school year
Primary- 3 until all lessons mastered (around 2nd kindergarten semester to beginning of first grade)
Lower elementary- 1st grade-3rd grade
Upper elementary- 4th-6th grade
Middle school- 7th and 8th

ALSO KEEP IN MIND THIS STORY CAME FROM A 6 YEAR OLDS THEORY! DO NOT TAKE THIS TOO SERIOUSLY!

One day in primary, me and my friends were fighting over who got to wash the windows (we were odd kids, we know). Eventually, we came to the decision that I will wash them because I was moving up to lower elementary before the month ended. My friend with serious anger issues did not like this at all, so he decided to try and take the supply basket from me. In doing this, the cleaner spilled because the cap wasn’t screwed on right. He got in trouble, which made it worse, and he said “I will get my revenge on you spithead”

The very next day I was moved up, and that kid was expelled for bringing the following items.
-a butcher knife
-a shovel
-carpet cleaner
-a large blanket
His dad was also arrested within that year for murder so I think this boy asked him for advice. This is the one instance where I thank that school for what they did. I would’ve died at only 6 years old if they didn’t move me up and he got away with his plan. It’s so hard to believe that a 6 year old, who gave me his gloves when I forgot mine, who never hurt anyone badly in his fits of anger, thought of murdering his friend.

The school didn’t even consider that he might have planned to murder me, he was expelled for bringing the knife, and my other friend saw the rest and told me the second she moved up.
AGAIN! JUST A 6 YEAR OLDS THEORY!

I havn't really done anything like that, but I get really strong gut feelings sometimes and I ALWAYS follow them. The one time I didn't, my brother 'attaked' me with a nerf gun and shot me in the neck. So, didn't doge that bullet, may have doged others.

I was once stuck in an airport while the airline scrambled to find an aircraft for us. The one we were supposed to get on had crashed at its previous landing/airport. Also, a bullet from the woods behind our house hit the back wall of the house, about head high. The kids were out there playing and I had to grab them and run inside.

When I was 17 my boyfriend and I drove to Lake Geniva ( Wisconsin ) my boyfriend went into a bar and as I was not old enough to go with him, I took a stroll to the marina. As I walked back to the car I noticed an older man was following me. I quickend my pace and he did as well; I made it to the car he lunged at me ( thank God for electric door locks ) I dove into the car and hit the button. This man then walked around the car trying all the doors, he scared the hell out of me! hHe hung around for over 20 minutes! Finally a car parked next to me and I rolled the window down about an inch and begged them to go in the bar to tell my boyfriend that a man was trying to grab me. Eventually he came out and we drove off.I can only immagine what would have happend to me if that old dude had managed to get me....

There are so many smaller ones, but the one where we seemed to have most luck was at a music festival (+10 years ago).
I was there to provide first aid and just got back to our mainstage post with a small group from diner (really good catering), we got back early so our last set of people (including the post leader) could go and eat before the catering closed.
A mega storm erupted, worse than we had ever had seen or expected. We saw the bad weather arriving, but we looked at it as this reoccurring yearly thing, an evening rainstorm that always led to some people getting hypothermia. This storm knocked over several trees, collapsed tents & threw down podia equipment. Our first aid tent almost lifted off, if not for our crew & even some patients hanging on the poles to keep it down and save the post.
After the storm set, we regrouped everyone, organised the search & rescue (do our jobs to the best of our capacity) etc. I checked for damages once everything got done & the situation was stable enough, one ambulance got a broken windshield ... that's it ... no one hurt (we had 100+ people there), no vehicles badly damaged. We literally had to cut trees, which had fallen all around the posts, to get the ambulances out. Knowing people died and really a lot of things got destroyed, we all were sure we avoided a lot of (nature) bullets that day.
That day will haunt me for the rest of my life, but having our entire team in safety and knowing all the good we did that day, it helps to sleep ....

for me it is sort of literal.
I do archery. sometimes you shoot at this blank mat of foam to improve your aim and the arrow can bounce back and, very rarely, hit you. so every time I shoot I dodge an arrow. I know it isn't as intriguing as the others but yeah.

One Sunday night I was out with a friend at a brewery located in a light industrial area. The surrounding neighborhood was completely quiet on a weekend night. After a while we heard glass popping and falling to the floor. I thought at first that a light bulb in one of the pendant lights hanging over the bar had exploded. However, we saw bullet holes in the window and realized that someone had been firing into the brewery from a car. Several cars out front were also hit. Although there were about a dozen people were in the room, fortunately no one was struck by the bullets, although a few people had small injuries from broken glass. (This is in the US, where guns are all too available.)

When I was in College, I signed up for Finite Math. Anybody who's taken it knows that you don't question why in Finite Math, you just accept that it is what it is.

Well the first couple of days in class and the professor takes roll. He never looks up to see who is saying "here" when he calls a name. Could have been one kid pretending to be 20 different people and he would have been none the wiser.

Then he started showing us how to do problems on the board. I was confused as to which part of the chapter he was covering so I asked if he could explain something only to have him reply "Just read the book." I withdrew from the class and signed up for another math class.

A friend of mine stayed behind in the class. She said they all studied and did their best, but come test time...more than half the class failed. She said she realized that he was doing the problems backwards on the board, but then using the questions and answers out of the teacher's copy of the book for tests.

I told her to go to the chair of the department with a group of students. The chair investigated and they found out that the professor was in the middle stages of Alzheimer's. They told him he could retire early or be fired. He retired.

The kids were allowed to retake the class for full credit and at no cost. The professor passed away 6 months later.

I really feel bad...he was probably and awesome professor in his day. I'm just glad I knew that something was off and transferred out in time.

A few years ago, my partner and I were living with his younger sister. It was close to the town centre, which is where I worked. Partner meets me after work (8-10 min walk from the shop to home) and we stopped at a takeaway. I needed to go to the bathroom, so I left the takeaway and started walking home while my partner waited for our food.

This was around 6pm in winter so it was dark. Halfway home, I realise someone is walking parallel to me on the path. It was a black man (this is relevant) that had been in a pub. So I stop and look at my phone to make it look like I'm texting; he had disappeared between some vehicles parked on the road. I walked back to the takeaway and my partner asked why I'd come back. I told him about the man following me and not two minutes later he walks past the window and looks in; then he notices my partner (who is 6'2" and broad) and continues walking past.

It's the only ever time I've been followed and though it was only a matter of minutes, and nothing came of it, it still shook me up and I hated walking anywhere in the dark for a while.
