So, a brief explanation about this. I moved away from my best friend a few years ago and I miss him really badly. Also, my grandma's dog had to be put to sleep about a month ago and I think about him every day. I have a lot on my plate right now and I need your help. Thanks!

If you don't like being sad (sometimes I do), just full-on distract yourself. If you have something to do, you just put Netflix on Audio Description and get to work. And if you just have some downtime, watch tv while eating and doing Buzzfeed quizzes. May not be healthy, but it works. It keeps me from thinking about existentiality.

I find that sometimes you just can’t escape feeling sad. It’s part of the bargain of having things that make us happy, like best friends and dogs. All I can suggest is that you try to remember you won’t feel this low forever. I don’t think you necessarily stop feeling sad about certain things, but it will lose its sting and you’ll find you can live with it.

Consider seeing your doctor if you feel this is something you just can't get over yourself or you think about doing things you shouldn't. If you understand this is temporary but just want something to help you through, then you could try some of the following:

1. Listen to your favourite music, or explore some new music.
2. Watch your favourite feel-good movies/actors.
3. Google "Steven Joyce Waitangi 2016" and watch the coverage on John Oliver or Patriot Brains.
4. Hug someone (but be covid safe).
5. Help someone else. Visit some old people in a nursing home, or volunteer to help the homeless etc (again, be covid safe). Helping others can make make us feel better.
6. Experience nature. Go for a walk in a forest, listen to the birds.
7. Learn to meditate.
8. Challenge yourself by learning a new skill, or having some goal you can strive towards.
9. Connect with other people in any way you can.
10. Get enough exercise
11. Eat healthy
12. Learn how to cook a new cuisine you have never cooked before.
13. Do something different. Change up your routine. Try something new.

Hope at least one of those helps you.

First of all. I am truly sorry that you are experiencing this.
And now my advice (as provided by a gimpy 55 year old). Emotions are fleeting moments. They are neither right, nor wrong. It’s what we do with those feelings. That counts. Your friend? Is still your friend regardless of time or space. The sadness you are experiencing may well be associated with what is referred to as seasonal depression as well. Have you considered a journal? As you write, just say to yourself “I give this emotion to my journal, to keep it there”. Just a thought.
