I'm writing a novel and one of my characters in a Mongol man. It's a culture that I've always been fascinated and inspired by but there's very little representation for them in Western books and I'd like to change that.
That said, I've never been there myself. Nor do I know anyone who has been or lived there, so my knowledge is severely restricted. I've never even met a Mongol, which sucks.
So if there are any Mongolians out there, I'd be incredibly grateful if you could tell me some facts about yourself and your culture. There's lots online about Mongolian Horse culture and traditional information - it's the modern era I'm having trouble researching (ironically). This isn't to say I don't want to hear about the beautiful steppes and nomadic peoples; I love that the culture is still as prevalent as ever even in modern day. My character hails from modern Ulaanbaatar but has family in the steppes.
The book isn't set in Mongolia, so I'm mostly hoping to ask about communication, etiquette, daily customs/rituals, slang and sayings etc.
Anything you can tell me is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!
