Absolute Motivation
Damn right. Free education is a privlege, but it shouldn’t be.
Load More Replies...You have students like this who have to overcome such obstacles, and then students whose parents gave the university a hundred grand and bought their kid a condo and BMW. You end up with one adult who truly understands how to earn everything, and one adult who expects everything.
Anybody see a huge problem with elitism, access to education and... well almost everything?
Good. Now you can sue the people who made you pay for a test millions of kids take for free.
It Always Gets Better. Just Keep Pressing Forward
Look at that man. He looks so fabulous and confident now. I am so happy for him.
"To the world you might be only one person...but to one person you might be the world". I don't know who first said that, but it seems to fit here.
I'd love to have heard what he said. I just can't imagine trying to make someone understand, when they're in the depth of depression, that it will or can get better.
The world has been one heck of a ride lately. And even though the cursed year of 2020 is already behind our backs, the new year hasn’t been as forgiving as we hoped. With coronavirus mutations, political turmoil and on-off quarantines and restrictions around the globe, many feel drained like never before.
But although the start hasn’t been that fresh, there’s always a way to keep yourself positive, mindful, and motivated. These three words may sound like something reserved for yoga people, but trust me, it’s all easier than we think. So to find out the secrets of navigating through life when it’s a pain in the rear, Bored Panda reached out to the positivity coach and author of “Positive Young Minds” Lynn How.
Lynn told us that in difficult times, although she felt she was functioning normally, her “resilience to sudden changes or unexpected issues cropping up were suddenly a big thing.” It turns out that without inner strength, our resilience in periods of crisis can be impaired.
Doing Things Poorly Is More Than Worth It
In a similar vein, the most motivational advice I ever heard came from Goofy. Well, from Bill Farmer who voices Goofy, but the first version is cuter. He said (paraphrased) "Dont feel like you have to go at 50mph. Go at 1mph. You'll still get there. It'll take longer, but after an hour, you'll have gone a mile. If you go at zero mph, after an hour, you're still where you started!" (Hyuk!)
One of my favorite quotes that have helped me through my life: "It's better done, than perfect"
For artists: A ten-minute, messy, crappy sketch that you had fun doing is better than a four-hour painting that stressed you out and gave you a migraine.
In Dutch we say "iets is beter dan niets", meaning "something is better than nothing".
Sometimes Ya Just Have To Ask
Good for you! I work at an aviation college and we have aircraft in our hangar for the students to learn on. When we have a visitor you can just see the look in their eyes "I really REALLY would love to get into that F16 cockpit!" It generally takes very little coaxing from me to make them jump in. You could light up rooms with the smiles - and of course plenty of pictures get taken (as long as no classified info is included).
Exactly! I logged on to post the same, just ask, the answer will be either yes or no all the time ( maybe doesn't count )
Load More Replies...“Sometimes to add and build that inner strength, you need to let those emotions out as opposed to burying them deep inside (a popular coping mechanism). On many occasions, burying your emotions (which I describe affectionately as Ostrich Syndrome) can be more detrimental in the long term than letting them out.”
According to Lynn, inner strength is the ability to keep getting up when you get knocked down. Incredibly, we all are born with it and it’s the skill we learn in the first few years of our lives when those neural pathways are still developing. If they’re not developed at that time, “then you may find yourself less resilient as an adult.”
You Will Either Find A Way, Or An Excuse
Indeed. There was a rather well known painter in my home city who was a Daltonist (red-green color blindness). As a result, some of his paintings tended to look kinda psychedelic – especially the sunsets with green skies. (And I strongly suspect he did it on purpose to some extent; after all, color tubes are labeled.)
Yaas! Some of the most beautiful paintings in the world are Chinese ink paintings. They are all in black and white and shades of grey.
Set Goals And Reach Them
Now you can enjoy the next 33 years a bit more, with a special smile. Congratulations!
Did you read the date on the tweet? Obviously not...

Load More Replies...Nice! I wonder what he studied and if it was it related to his career... ?
I think his graduation as a younger person was delayed by wars and such.
Load More Replies...I was in my late 50s when I started studying for my BA and 61 when I completed my MA. To top it off, I studied in Taiwan, and my BA classes (Chinese Literature) were all taught in Chinese with Chinese textbooks and Chinese exams (up to 11 in one week sometimes). Damn near killed me, but at least the MA classes were in English, as I was studying TESOL.
Congratulations! I am 71. and never graduated. Since I am doing well, fitting in my high class in law family, , travelled every continent in the world,(oh no, not Antartica, but I hope I have time) Still, sometimes I feel stupid, because I don't have that degree.I never even told my husband of 45 years! So clearly it bothers me. Our youngest daughter has 3 masters. Psychology, Biology, and human health.(?)I have a very good life, living on a lake in a house I mostly designed. But no degree, never even finished highs cool.(But that was a lyceum, he same our Dutch princes Christina went to while I was there) Thanks to my artist husband, I have been all over the world. Can afford luxury things...but still...I feel dumb , because Ihave no degree, except a small business diploma.I clearly don't NEEED a degree. But still...can you tell me what motivated you?
The Last Two Runners In The Pittsburgh Marathon Not Letting Each Other Quit. Obtain Your Goal No Matter What
I ran a marathon a few years back. For non-athletes like me, it's very challenging, very strenuous and many people don't even cross the finish line. So these two are heroes for accomplishing something that most people can't. "Even if you run a mile, it's a mile more than if you never run at all"
The street that I live on has several local marathons that go down it every summer (well, except last summer 😢). I'm not a runner, but I love to watch the ones at the back of the pack. My husband, kids, and I will go outside and applaud them. It just seems so much harder for them, yet they keep going.
Load More Replies...I've had a 'love / hate' relationship with running for a few years now. Made it to 1/2 marathon level (slowly) but never attempted a full. After seeing this picture, maybe this year is the year that changes.
If I remember correctly, those women didn't know each other. One was about to give up when the other arrived and told her they would finish together because they got so far. I hope they're still friends today.
Recovery Is Possible And It's Worth It
I love this story even though it is hard to look at. Prayers for your mom and everyone who helped you to sobriety and especially for you as you navigate your recovery.
At the time I was very grateful my mom gave me another ride to a hospital after the first one kicked me out to die. I don't really owe her credit in my recovery, because she was never apart of my life before my addiction and especially when i had nothing. but i called her one day when i couldnt take it anymore (i was days away from death, i know for a fact) and she drove 3 hours to get me. i was so shocked. but im glad i called. she didnt visit in the hospital or even let me stay with her after my heart surgery, and had to stay in a motel i could barely afford, BUT we have been working on our relationship. It has been very difficult but we talk now pretty regularly and have never had this kind of relationship before. unfortunately i didnt have much else support at all. i mean from the hospital kicking me out knowing i was going to die from heart failure, all because i had a panic attack, to nurses telling me i deserved the pain i was in and telling me i would end up relapsing.
Load More Replies...its me in the pic. im glad it gives you hope!!! <3
Load More Replies...I was 5"4 and 200lbs. My body was so swollen from alcohol bloating that I couldn't wear rings on my fingers and actually had to have one cut off.... I was addicted to alcohol for over 10 years. I had tried q few time to get sober, but everytime I fell back into the bottle. The last time God had had enough! He brought me to hell, I was reliving my sexual abuse, as a movie set on repeat. I was fighting with my soul mate (who loved me through it all), I was constantly sick, and I drank .75 of a gallon of cheap rot gut vodka, it was so bad that I had to keep vodka on my night stand, when the alcohol started leaving my system I would wake up shaking, with my heart racing, because I was in withdrawal. I would drink to go back to sleep. At the end (like 1.5 months) I WANTED so so badly to get sober I had enough, I begged every hospital crisis center, & stabization unit in my area to help me... I live in America in the deep south without insurance.... They turned me away to basically die. How it came to a head is I have type 1 diabetes, so the alcohol put me into diabetic ketoacidosis ( What that feel like is starving to death, but not being able to eat because you felt like you where kicked in the stomach, but it didn't matter anyways if I did get food in the pain was still there, I was so tired I slept 16 hours a day,I felt like my body was on fire , and there was acid in my veins... Because there was. Worat of all it started effecting my breathing, I couldn't catch my breath. All of this only took 24 hours to onset) when I got to the hospital my blood was so acidic that the Dr looked at me and said, had I not have gotten to the hospital I would have died in less than 5 hours. I was 5 hours from death! This forced their hand finally to detox me, because I spent 6 days in the ICU getting my body chemistry recalabrated.
He Lets Nothing Get In His Way
i don't know why people with down syndrome are not more hired. they are super proud of working which make them really reliable. and make really great job.
DS has a wide spectrum. There are high functioning ones and others with severe cases where they cannot talk or even go to the restroom on their own. The ones higher on the spectrum are more likely to find work as adults

I love his smile! He’s so enthusiastic and looking fly in his threads! I hope he got the job!!!!
“All is not lost though, as increasingly, we are finding out more information through recent research about the brain's neuroplasticity.” Lynn explained further: “In simplistic terms, this is the brain’s ability to rewire itself with the correct input e.g. positive reinforcement and therapeutic treatments such as cognitive behavior therapy.”
That means that even though we may not be necessarily resilient in the first place, our brain has the capacity to “rewire itself,” which is essentially to learn resilience even though it never really had it. Very effective methods to do so are positive affirmations and mindfulness practices that everyone can practice at home.
Arnie Says Take It One Step At A Time
Love this guy. He may not be perfect, but he probably knows a thing or two about getting over failure and moving forward.

Never Let Your Circumstances Define You

You are wonderful! You have worked so hard so your parents can be proud and happy they were able to leave the refugee camp. All the best for you and your family!
You use circumstance as an excuse to do nothing or a ladder for climbing up to success.
If You Change The Way You Look At Things, The Things You Look At Change
Eating with friends and eating alone are both fine. Some days a girl has to take herself out...go to three different places because she can’t make up her mind and has a big appetite. There’s no one or thing to consider except if you should bother wearing pants in the first place.
Eating alone entails enjoying your own company! But if you think someone is lonely invite them to join you.
I love going out to eat or to the cinema on my own. I can eat wherever I like (ok, eat wherever my bank balance likes) or choose the film without a three hour discussion over what to see. The thing I learnt years ago was that the majority of people are so busy with their own lives that they don't really notice a random stranger eating alone.
Eating alone in a restaurant with a newspaper is one of my favorite self indulgences.
I LOVE eating alone. I have to be around people all day at work and a nice lunch, on my own, in a local diner, is an absolute haven for me. I am never lonely and I feel recharged afterwards.
This is my favorite thing to do! I have two kids and a husband that always need something from me (which I do happily). But to and have a lovely meal in peace with a nice book in the sunshine... Well, that's heaven.
Keep Going
I love this story. My brother had a hard time finding a job after prison, but he did it. He pounded the pavement, got letters of recommendation from his PO, the judge who sent him to jail, the DA. He is a good person, who had something bad happen and things snow balled. Never give up! Now he owns a beautiful home, has a fantastic great paying job and a good woman in his life! And a great doggo!!
I am happy your brother is doing well and has changed his life. My mom used to say that you had to be your own advocate and had to fight for yourself. Your brother is clearly a fighter and a good man with so many rooting for him. He also has a wonderful sister!
Load More Replies...This guy is working a hard, honest job after prison BECAUSE HE WANTS TO TURN AROUND.
Sadly many ex cons have to go back to illegal activities or work for banned associates because few companies will hire ex cons. So they end up back in prison where the cycle starts all over again.
Load More Replies...I'm considering doing something like this for my autistic son. He can't get hired anywhere. I was thinking and ice cream truck , but your idea is better . Sometimes you've got to think outside the box. Not everyone gains success in the same way
how much farther along are you... i have a job and no criminal record and feel caged while you are free as a bird. hope you continue to prosper
Attitude and determination, willingness to take responsibility! Fantastic example!
I also got to discover firsthand that if no one is responding to your resume, JUST CREATE YOUR OWN JOB. Entrepreneurship is perfect for those who don't like artificial limits set on their potential. When I worked in an office as an admin/exec assistant, I got paid ~$13 - $17/hr. When I needed to find new employment, I used the skills I had and became a professional organizer. I didn't know what rate to charge, so I lowballed myself and decided on $15/hr. I had a kind & appreciative client who told me that I should be charging WAY more. Through trial & error, my rate went from $15/hr to $50/hr in the span of 1 1/2 yrs, w/o any change in my skill level. I learned that life was much more negotiable than I'd been led to believe by the narcissists in my life, who happen to be my own family members. Always let people know how they can empower themselves. Your words could alter the course of someone's life, esp. if they've never had anyone advocating for them.
Just Believe
You know you will be there for all the made up holidays. Teach a child from birth that they are self sufficent and can create happiness just by being satisfied with what they already have and making the most of it.
this made me chuckle when i read this...this is my new motto for life
My best "daddy advice" as I was searching for my career: talk to and ask questions of anyone who will talk to you. It worked...I retired at 50.
Many people feel like mindful meditation is not for them. Even experts are not immune to that. “I would have nominated myself last year with the ‘person least likely to meditate’ award, but things have changed. I am an over analyzer,” Lynn told us.
“However, now I have set aside 15–20 minutes a day to just 'be.’ I have trained myself to sit in silence with an empty mind. It took a while as when you start to do this, you just think about everything you haven’t done that day (often described as your monkey mind!).”

Being Human
I really like this. I hope that if I am ever in that position, I will build a Guinness record table.
I love this. We always had "orphans" dinners when I was a kid - and it wasn't just Thanksgiving or Christmas. My Mom was a nurse and she often brought over patients that didn't have family. Some of the best Sundays of my life were spent listening to the stories of those elderly folks.

Take out the top window, grab the plates/bowls, and then ... move on.
Use a glass cutter to the window above remove the glass and take the dishes out one by one. Then reglaze the window.
It's an opportunity to buy new plates, too! Get that metaphor?

True Teacher
A science teacher from rural Kenya who donates most of his salary to help poorer students has been crowned the world's best teacher and awarded a $1 million prize, beating 10,000 nominations from 179 countries.
Thank you, Dani Ra for providing his name. I had no idea who he is. I looked him up and for others who didn't know, this is what Wikipedia says about him: "

I feel this every time some posts about their own little vigilantly justice against someone who they perceive to be rude... you literally don't know what's happening. I was so angry when my mom was dying and I wish I could thank every person who was kind to me at a time when I was hard to love.
Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry! I've lost my dad and my sister in law within two months of each other. Now I'm fighting for custody of my three siblings to remove them from their abusive mother. Some days even a small, kind smile from a stranger will make me tear up. You never know what someone is going through. It could be the happiest day of their life or the worst. Think of others and be of service because all everyone else's experiences are just as important as yours.
Sitting in a cafe and the girl behind me was crying quietly into her coffee. I came over and sat next to her and held her hand and she burst into tears and squeezed my hand tighter and put her head on my shoulder. She stayed like that for 10 mins. Sometimes we just can't hold it in and that's ok. Kindness and being able to help someone with just the smallest act of empathy means the world to some. I was that same girl once and the kindness and empathy of another girl changed me, understanding there are random people who do care.
Not having depression or anxiety is easy. Having them is hard work. Those of those that don't have those issues can go about our day, getting up, getting dressed, going to work or school. No big deal. But the amount of energy required to do those simply, normal, daily things is incredible for some people. So, hats off to those of you that get up every day in spite of your depression!
This one got me. I have been the one about to fall apart. Just a small gesture of kindness means more than I can say.
Well, that's a bit ironic coming from a company that has highly questionnable sides regarding the respect of work laws, environnement, tax avoidance and wage policy...

I have been crocheting for years and am still learning. What I like about crocheting the best is that if you make a mistake, it can be fixed with a little effort. I second the YouTube videos. I have learned so many new stitches that way and you can replay lessons over and over until you feel confident. If you finish a project and decide you don't like it and would have preferred to use a different design, you can unravel the project and begin again. I make a lot of baby clothes and baby blankets and afghans. Each one is made with care and love. Someday when I am no longer here, I hope these gifts will be handed down and maybe I'll be remembered.

Rebirth
But no matter where you run to, there you are. Changing the part of you that is hurting you is how you heal. Talk to a therapist. Ask your doctor for medication. Check yourself into rehab. Start studying for your GED. Get debt counselling. Name the thing that makes you hate yourself. Look it in the face, and know that it can be defeated. You may fail, and have to pick yourself up and start over, and then do it again. You may need help. Not every battle can be won alone. But you can win.

Guiding Your Way Out
It’s okay to give yourself some downtime, but it’s important to know/realize when to get up/ get help/ start pulling yourself together. It’s a very narrow and incomplete view of struggling and pulling yourself out of that place. Please comment and add to this. The tools I use may not work for another person and it may not be helpful to me for the next funk I get into, so I’d like to learn and have more in my arsenal. I have begun hitting the gym again, wearing some lingerie/dresses, eating and visiting people I trust and worth the risk (no immune compromised or in direct contact of such a person), and hopefully catch up on some reading and checking out art exhibits. Communication is exhausting but worth it for the right people; same goes for vulnerability.

For myself, I call it "going dark". If I let myself acknowledge it and spend maybe 1 or 2 days being quiet, sleeping and just lump out, it's faster to get over it than if I fight it, don't acknowledge I'm in pain or just going through the motions for a couple of extra days. It's most important to recognize you're not doing well and take a day off, see a therapist or talk to your parents or best friend.
If you are stuck in bed, you can still exercise. Fidget or put on some music and twitch and flex to it. Many years of being bed bound for weeks at a time and I only got blood clots when I was too anemic to move at all. (Doc apologised for thinking it was just my usual stuff acting up more than usual). Even if you can't move as a whole, move the bits that can shift and dance whilst reclining

I dropped out of college after 1.5 semesters when I was 19. Worked retail, did temp stuff (nothing wrong with that), and finally went back to college and got a degree in graphic design when I was 35. Now I'm 50, own my own business with my wife, and make a good living designing books and magazines. You've got to just go for it.
Because at 32 you'll say "I should have done this from 28-32 like I thought, and I would be done by now"
This happened to me at 32... I thought "I'll be 38 by the time I finish this part time, what's the point?" I am now 48 and wish I had started then... because if I start now I'll be 54... and then when I'm 54 I'll probably say "If I start now I'll be 60." One day soon I hope to 'Start now."
I graduated from college at the age of 59, with a degree as an X-ray Technologist.
You Can Do It
My dad would get his panties in a bunch that I took 6 years in college. 3 for my A.A and 3 for my BA. Community college - I had to drive across town, catch a boat (island) and take a bus to and from, and worked in thr afternoons. 4 year - one year was finishing pre reqs for my major that I did not know about before.
My "baby" sister got her BA a couple of years ago -- at the age of 55. I was, and still am, enormously proud of her for taking the advice of a friend and her hubby and getting that degree that she put off so long.
I started my degree with The Open University in 1984. I finally got a BA in 2009

Never Give Up On Healthy Habits
Love it! Another good one is: "Workout because you love your body, not because you hate it"
As someone who is recovering from anorexia, I needed this today. Thank you.
30 min of elliptical was not fun today. Had to take my shoes off to finish it, due to ellipticals constantly making my toes tingle, despite having a hurt foot and I need support on my feet. But I did it. And the treadmill is also up and running, so I hope I can have a routine to lose this weight.

This hit hard. I‘m always expecting the worst, mentally preparing for battles that almost never actually happen. I realised that only recently and am trying to stop, it’s such a destructive behaviour. But it’s difficult to get rid off such habits...
True! Easy to find a parking space when you invoke the parking fairy - which basically means you are thinking about finding a space so notice stuff like people getting in to a car or indicator lights showing someone pulling out of a space etc.
Measuring Success
They would put that there, but it might fill the whole pie chart!
Load More Replies...I've seen this before -- and I will say now what I said then. Liking what you do needs to be a bigger piece of that "pie". I've worked in miserable job situations: all the rest of those elements are irrelevant if your job is boring or fails to give you a sense of purpose, whatever the line of work.

Load More Replies...One of the reasons I hold my ground when it counts, no matter what people say. If I overstep and say inappropriate things, I'll own it. But I'm finding that (especially on social media), people will accuse someone of all kinds of nastiness simply for refusing to be "walked on".

For All The "Failures, Disappointments, And Screwups" Out There
Lincoln was our finest president. A man who overcame great adversity to help others break free of an evil system of oppression. Only someone who had suffered greatly could have the will and empathy to lead a country out of darkness
"I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races, [applause]—that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race." - Abraham Lincoln Though Lincoln accomplished great things, let's not idolize him and ignore the fact that he held onto racist ideologies. Source: https://teachingamericanhistory.org/library/document/the-lincoln-douglas-debates-4th-debate
This was the 1800s. I know those views are wrong now, but back then Abraham Lincoln was actually criticized for not being racist enough. Maybe we shouldn't ignore the fact that statements like that are certainly racist nowadays, but in the 1800s, that was actually a rather progressive statement.

My problem with this is that it is naive and fully ignores reality. In reality, sometimes doors are slammed shut in our face. Real bravery is choosing another path, not clawing at the closed door.

Sorry, I should qualify: Here in Australia marijuana is illegal... but you are able to have up to 3 plants and are only given a fine but... tobacco is legal as long as you are over 18...BUT... If you grow 1 tobacco plant it could be a gaol sentence. Its a tax grab by the goverent and it really pisses me off! I have paid over $210,000 in tobacco tax in my 20 years of smoking... and I am 1 of 100,000s... meanwhile fatties keep getting fatter, and heart conditions keep getting ore prolific... diabeties is has overtaken cancer as a caiuse nof death... but, yeah, let's keep blaming smokers.
Load More Replies...It sounds awesome. when put like this... And IT IS awesome. But, trust me, It is NOT real money you have... it just gets absorbed... it is a rare person who puts that money aside. I do not know one single person who has given up smoking who suddenly has $30,000 after 10 years. It just doesn't happen. It should be more "I saved paying $20,000 in tax to my government over that ten years whilst they still dehuanise me for an addiction I once had." At least that is how it is in Australia. They tax the s**t out of cigarettes... 1 pack costs $30 because the tax on that is $24... It's a billion dollar a year tax... NONE of which goes directly to anti-smoking campaigns or health care. Goodness knows what the govenrnent will to when we all stop soking or die out!! If they really cared they would make it illegal.
When people say they have no $ and they smoke, I am not empathetic at all. Addiction or not.

We should stop saying "if you truly want it you'd do it". We need to understand that success can look like getting out of bed that day, having a well fed family, a happy pet, a clean home, good relationships. I know that their are people who understand this I just want to say it as well. It's okay if you weren't accepted into an Ivy League school even though you tried. You can be successful without those schools. Nowadays truly loving yourself is a form of success. If you ask me it's the most important type of success
