Bored Panda reached out to Myeong-Minho to learn more about his creative process and himself. We were curious about his background as an artist. “I have never formally learned drawing professionally,” Myeong-Minho shared. “Since I was young, I enjoyed drawing cartoon characters. Then, in middle school, I participated in an art competition and even won an award. For high school, I enrolled in a cartoon art high school. Although I was accepted to an art college, due to my family’s financial situation, I had to give up my dream and enlist in the military.

After completing my military service, I worked various jobs here and there, trying everything possible. Then, one day while working in a factory, amidst the repetitive daily routine, a thought struck me: ‘What would I regret the most if I were to die?’ I realized that not pursuing what I truly wanted to do would be my biggest regret. So, I made up my mind to start drawing, the thing I wanted to do the most. From that moment on, I began to draw seriously.”

Myeong-Minho mainly draws inspiration from the people and stories within everyday life. “The diverse array of people and their countless stories seem to offer the most intriguing subject matter.”

In the world of art, Myeong-Minho is known for his heartfelt portrayals of love and familial connections. But what draws the artist to these themes, and why do his illustrations strike such a chord with his audience? Myeong-Minho told us that his drawings are mainly inspired by observing people’s lives. As a result, it seems natural that people empathize a lot with his drawings. “Especially the theme of love seems to resonate well with everyone, transcending the boundaries of my drawings. I think love is a magical existence. I believe that there is a great connection between love within families, love between lovers, and love among friends. Love seems to be something similar for everyone, transcending nations. That’s why it seems like readers empathize greatly with my drawings.”

As an artist, the road to creation isn’t always smooth sailing. There are hurdles and challenges that come in different shapes and sizes. For Myeong-Minho, money seems to be the most challenging aspect. “I don’t consider money a big problem because I see it simply as a means to achieve my dreams. However, I do think that a certain amount of money is necessary to keep moving forward. That’s why I overcome challenges for my dreams through drawing. I just draw pictures.”

I am ugly crying right now. I miss my father so much. He had an accident when I was 18, and although he didn't die, he suffered such a catastrophic brain injury that he became completely disabled and bedridden. I lost "my dad" that day. His body remained, and I stayed living at home for the next 21 years to help care for him, because I loved him. I never got the chance to have him meet my boyfriend. He couldn't walk me down the aisle if I'd gotten married. And he died in 2021 - my mother and sister couldn't handle it and they bailed and left me at the hospital hospice room with my dying father. I held his hand as he died, and my boyfriend held his other hand. I told my father it was okay to go and be at peace finally. He took his last breath with me at his side. I have his ashes. My mother pretends he never died. “The heart of a father” comic above absolutely broke me. Dad, I miss you so much. You were an amazing father and you did your best to try to protect me from Mom's physical abuse. I wish things were different. But at least you are at peace now, out of Mom's abusive reach.

I just got off the phone with my father after I apologized a few times for my little sister’s 100lb cane corso dog attacking and biting me twice. I feel your good memories and your grief. I am happy that good fathers (and mothers) are out there making good humans. I hope that I put some good out there myself in spite of the fam I was born into.

If kids are anywhere in my future, I can only aspire to be this kind of husband and father. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go sob tears of admiration in the corner.
