Fitness Blogger Shares Food Comparisons To Change The Way You Think About Food – Do You Agree With Her?
British fitness blogger Lucy Mountain wants to change the way you think about calorie counting, and she’s using handy visual food comparisons to prove her point.
As Mountain explains in a series of photos juxtaposing supposedly ‘healthy’ snacks with ‘junk,’ you can treat yourself in small portions and still stay within your daily limit. You can also go overboard with certain ‘healthy’ foods, especially when they contain additives, and quickly exceed your limit.

This is Lucy Mountain, a fitness blogger who’s sending an important message about calorie counting
A hand full of almonds vs. a packet of fruit pastils
“Many would choose the almonds for the nutritional value or the flavour – which is totally fine. Many would choose the almonds because even though they’d prefer Fruit Pastels, almonds would make them feel more ‘on track’ mentally – which again, is totally fine… When the majority of my diet has consisted of well-balanced food that’s full of micronutrients, I have no issue eating something that’s less so just because I love the taste of it. This is just a personal choice… ‘Healthy’ to me is exactly what I make it. And Fruit Pastels (in moderation) make me happy which I believe contributes largely to my overall health.”
Salt and vinegar crisps vs. vegetable crisps
“Although the difference in calories is pretty minuscule, you’d expect the vegetable crisps to be considerably less calories right? This is just another little reminder that often there’s not much difference between the product marketed as the ‘healthy alternative’ and the real thing. So go for the thing you actually WANT to eat.”
Water and water
“These ‘Touch of Fruit’ guys totally got me a couple of months ago when I was focusing on trying to get a little bit leaner. I just didn’t expect my water to have calories, I felt so betrayed lol.”
What Twix consider one serving vs. real life
“If you’re being more mindful of your calories, this is a prime example of why it’s important to read the labels properly and not just what it says in large font on the front. I mean OF COURSE you’re going to eat the whole god damn thing, but it’s just good to know exactly what that equates to.”
White americano vs. flat white
“It’s often surprising how many calories are in coffees and hot drinks – a large Starbucks Flat White is 290 calories and a latte is 300. If weight-loss is your goal, a simple swap like ordering a white Americano instead will save you 250 calories.”
Solero ice cream vs. magnum ice cream
“If your goal is weight loss, the Solero could be a good swap for the ole classic Magnum (if it helps you stick to stay in a calorie deficit). And equally – if your goal is weight loss, the Magnum could be a good choice regardless (if it helps you stick to stay in a calorie deficit).”
‘Healthy breakfast’ vs. ‘naughty snack’
“They’re practically the same calories and macros, with the digestive biscuits being a fraction higher in protein and lower in sugar than Belvitas. Yes, Belvita has an extra few micronutrients but only the equivalent to approximately 150g of spinach…”
Fatloss food vs. fattening food
“No single food will cause weight-gain. Eating more calories than you’re expending constantly over a period of time will do this. Equally, no single food will cause weight-loss. Eating less calories than you’re expending constantly over a period of time will do this.”
100g milk chocolate vs. 100g gluten-free, wheat-free, milk-free chocolate
“There’s an association that ‘Free From = Healthy = Weight-loss.’ And it’s just simply not the case. Just because something doesn’t contain gluten or milk doesn’t means it’s any less calories or more conducive to your fitness goal.”
Toast and butter vs. toast and butter
“As you know from my recent posts, I’m about enjoying ALL ze food and there is nothing I cut out of my diet that I like the taste of – no matter my goal. Learning how to manage portion sizes has allowed me to achieve this!”
100g milk chocolate vs. 100g 85% dark chocolate
“For those of who genuinely love dark chocolate, keep doing you. However, if you PREFER the taste of milk, but force yourself to eat dark because you’ve read it’s ‘healthier’, just have the milk chocolate and enjoy it. In terms of weight-loss from a calorie perspective, it’s actually more beneficial and will raise happiness levels by 938% (unproven stat).”
Both are the same size, both come with avocado, cheese, croutons and dressing
“… Salads are a fantastic way to pack in lots of lovely micros but not all salads are the same. Being aware of the individual components of the meal you’re eating AND how it sits in context to the rest of your day will massively help if weight-loss/weight-gain is your goal.”
All three of these are smoothies
“Now some people have a smoothie as a meal, others have them as a snack – and either way, that’s totally fine. However, if weight-loss is your goal, being more mindful of what you throw into your smoothies could really make a difference.”
100 calories of strawberries vs. 100 calories of strawberries
“Don’t get me wrong; dried fruit is waaaay easier to eat when you’re on the go (ain’t nobody got time to whip out a punnet of strawberries lol). So they could be a good option if convenience is the priority. But when fat loss is the goal, 300g of fresh strawberries is likely to be more satiating.”
Someone who tracks their calories vs. someone who doesn’t
“That’s right, there is no difference. There’s no difference because the method you choose (if any) does not solely dictate the food you consume. It starts with you… Does counting a calorie stress you out? If so, don’t do it. It’s simply one of many methods.”
Do you agree with her?

Share on Facebookthis is a nonsense to think "calories" instead of proteins/glucids/fat and more important vitamins and minerals, and glycemic response. Almonds contains good fats (monounsaturated who helps control cholesterol balance), a lot vit E, fibers, magnesium and others minerals and vitamins. Fruits pastels are just sugar who will raise your glycemia very quickly and after you feel hungry and eat more. dark chocolate is better because it has more cocoa which is good for health... This post is so fake information, and false advertising to gain followers it is disgusting.
Body reacts completely different while having almonds compared to fruits pastels, those sugary things with no fiber raise the insulin which is a FAT STORING HORMONE. All calories are not equal. No wonder insulin resistance and diabetes are epidemic. If you like to have sugar and artificial colors go ahead, but don't compare them with something which has nutritional value.
Load More Replies...Products that don't contain sugar, milk, gluten etc are usually made for people who can't have those things, not for weight loss... you can't just remove one main ingredient and get the same or similar taste without adding a lot of other things, it's no wonder they have the same amount or even more calories.
Lose the fat and add the salt. Lose the gluten and you add binding agents that require additional artificial flavour. It's all a trade
Load More Replies...A handful of fruit jellies is not eating in "moderation" to keep you happy. Calorie count comparison with almonds is absurd too because most the the calories from almonds are from fat and protein, while from those nasty treats are from SUGAR! If you must, just have a piece or 2, and get the rest of your calories somewhere else. Don't listen to her.
When talking about weight loss it is a great comparison. If you don't think so you don't understand nutrition. Calories are calories. A deficit will cause weight loss and a surplus will cause weight gain. This is fact.
Load More Replies...Most stupid post ever. whats the conclusion, you are a trainer and this does not tell anyone what to eat. I eat almonds oh no i should eat candies they are same no harm done. Bloody stupid.
Spot on - there are no conclusions here. "Do what makes you feel good". Blather.
Load More Replies...What a horrible article! Comparing almonds (ingredients: almonds - period.) to fruit pastels (ingredients: sugar, colors, things you can't pronounce and have no idea how they were manufactured in some factory, artificial flavors, preservatives and other things that didn't grow in nature)?!? People shouldn't be so obsessed with losing weight and start being obsessed with eating healthy and the weight issue would solve itself naturally.
thank you for accentuating that the so-called "healthy" food is not necessarily healthy. so many people have this illusion that if it's more expensive, has more fancy-looking labels, fat-free, sugar-free, (also gluten-free lol even if gluten has nothing to do with your digestive system unless you have celiac disease)etc., then it's definitely better than the food someone picks when they have a tight budget. that's not always the case. limiting yourself will only make you crave the product you cut out more and you'll end up binging on it by the when your official diet is over.
The point she's trying to make here is that we need to stop breathing down everyone's neck and shaming them if they occasionally eat a box of sweets or a chocolate bar. Obviously the almonds are far healthier, but I'm not a gluttonous pig if I sometimes eat sugary junk food. All this talk of "you can have two pieces of sweets once a year to be considered moderation" and "sugar is evil and if you eat it you'll be fat forever!" is so nasty and discouraging and body shaming. How about you worry about what you put in your body and self-deny as much as you want, but I'm personally glad to finally see a health and fitness aficionado who doesn't rabidly insist that the only way not to be a slobby failure of a human being is to count all calories and spend 80% of your time obsessively poring over complicated nutrition charts.
There is only one fact. If you want to loose weight, do not eat sugar. Insulin spike after meal with sugar will not allow you to burn your own fat. You can eat as much fatty food (healthy fat - not Fish And Chips) as you like and you will not gain weight. Plus 3 or even 2 meals per day ( intermittent Fasting) and that's it. I know what I'm talking about as I've lost something like 35kg this way.
Everything you've said is wrong. Insulin does not stop the body from using its own fat to make energy. If that was true and you went into a caloric deficit, your body would seize and stop all function. Also, you can't eat as much fatty food as you want without gaining weight. If you expend 2000 calories in a 24-hour period and eat 2100 calories worth of almonds, you will have put on weight. You lost weight, but you don't really know why you lost weight.
Load More Replies...But the wax fake food looks so good! Just what do you mean by "real food"?
Load More Replies...Love how they call the "healthier" chips "vegetable" crisps, like potato's not a vegetable. And those coffee's are huge! The modern obsession with coffee has become a great way for many people to consume enormous amounts of dairy and sugar without really realising it.
Yes the fact that potatos are already a vegetable has been forgotten, probably because crisps have been so demonized (probs right btw)! I was just about to fall for the veggie crisp thing. Glad I saw this.
Load More Replies...Very general information and not a lot of it helpful. If you're going to count calories, read the damn labels. Take the smoothies for example. It's healthier to make them at home so you know what's going in them. She's probably show non-fat yogurt full of sugared fruit vs whole milk yogurt which is infinitely more satisfying.
This is soo informative. I've been trying to loose weight and got overwhelmed. There are soo MANY eat this and don't eat this etc. Everything seems about moderation and portion sizes. Eat that pizza but have 1 slice share the rest with your friends. It's food ...Enjoy it ..don't make it a chore !!! Didn't understand the Toast tho...
Keep sugar/carbs low, learn different names given to sugars in foods and where they are hidden. Eat real food, good fats and your weight will drop.

I totally agree with the message of the article. It is all about calorie intake. It does not matter where your calories come from (in terms of weight loss only). You can still put on weight eating very healthily if you eat 3,000 calories worth of vegetables (bit stomach required, but you get my point) but burn only 2,000.
After years of fad/failing diets, and at the age of 61..... finally accepted - less in - more out!!!! Portion control!!!!! Wish me luck. And I think this post is helpful, educational, inspiring and, it makes sense.
Always pay attention to the entire label! Not just calories and not just carbs. Many healthy foods are full of calories i he forms of beneficial fats, fats you body processes quickly and efficiently into fuel. As with anything, moderation is key. I maintain a fairly low amount of high glycemic carbolhydrates in my lifestyle (not diet). I have lost 35 lbs in the last two months and maintain a much healhier blood sugar level and my overal sense of well being is 100% better. I sleep better, I feel better, I am now more active and that is helping to shed the 140 pounds I want to lose. I will still ocassionally have pizza or ice cream because I'm not on a punishment program. But I do monitor closely what I ingest these days and it hasn't been hard to do either. Once you start looking at that abel, you start to see the borderline criminal methodology behind flavor engineering of many popular foods.
I think the best way to sum it up is to eat sensible but eat what YOU want, don't feel the need to stuff your face just cause you can.

More fluff from a fitness blogger. Seriously comparing sugar candy to nuts? Ignoring the fact that sugar turn into fat? Ignoring the health issues caused by choosing items with dairy? I sure hope this is fake and just for attention bored panda.
Calories in/Calories out is a grossly oversimplified model for weight management. There's just so much more to nutrition, like fat and different types of fat, carbs and different types of carbs, proteins and different types of proteins, sugars and different types of sugars, and all the different minerals and vitamins, among other things. 188 Calories of fruit pastels is going to do something entirely different from 188 Calories of almonds. Stop trying to simplify it into Calories in/Calories out!
The thing is its seems to be forgotton that healthier foods make you feel so much better. I,ve cut out chocolate, chips, sugar etc and although Im not losing tons of weight (very gradual) I feel so much more clear minded, relaxed and my skin is clearer. P.s. I also dilute all my fruit juices with water and don,t drink any fizzy c**p.
A calorie is not a calorie! It is very important for me to say that... for example in the first picture with the almonds vs the gummies they are similar calorie count but the candy is empty calories offering the body no nutritional value. My favorite example is raspberry lemon cheese cake slice from Cheesecake Factory it cost me about 1500 calories per slice!! My needed daily calorie consumption is 1280 calories per day. That cheesecake would never provide me with the nutrition I need so a calorie is not a calorie what you eat matters. This does not mean you should not enjoy deserts or your favorites but they should be eaten responsibly.
If all of this were true, I would be at my ideal weight instead of considering bariatric surgery...
need explanation. not easy to understand the comparisons. Like, why one salad has more calories? why One smoothie?
how on eartj does a latte have 50 more calories than a flat white? It's the same thing. except a latte has more foam (ie more air and should, if anything, have marginally less calories since there's no calories in air). This coming from a barista. 2 shots of coffee and a cup of milk, vs 2 shots of coffee and a cup of milk with marginally more foam/ less milk. hmmm, ok.
I definetely agree about the portion sizes, especially on chocolate bars and snacks
Okay, this article is terrible and misleading. One handful of almonds being compared to a handful of candy? Seriously? Calories are not the problem. It's sugar. Sugar is a HUGE problem for weight gain, and what you need to try to limit as much as you can. Also, those 'Low Fat' products? Absolute garbage. A lot of them have added sugar and fillers in them. Your body NEEDS fat in order to absorb vitamins, and starving your body of fat is counterproductive. Just be smart about the kind of fat you're eating. Saturated fats are good in moderation. Trans fats are what you need to absolutely steer clear of. It bothers me that Saturated Fat and Trans Fat are put in the same category on nutritional labels. HUGE difference. Generally speaking, the less processed things are, the healthier they are. If you feel like a candy bar every now and then, then go for it. Just try to eat healthier stuff after. Everything in moderation.
The only health food there is water, this food is not healthy, kind of misleading, calories do not mean anything, it is about fat vs carbs, carbs will spike your insulin, add fat, fat will not, calories really mean nothing, fat is 9 calories per gram and carbs are 4 calories per gram and carbs put on weight via insulin, many so called health gurus are ingornat
I am now dumber after reading your comment. 100 grams of fat is more calories than 100 grams of carbohydrates which means fat puts you into a caloric surplus quicker. Insulin does not pull calories out of the air and add it to your body. If you've consumed too many calories in fat, it gets stored as fat too.
Load More Replies...This is a good post for people who get overwhelmed by dieting and end up giving up
Each time you add food, DietSensor will indicate the right portion you can eat for each macronutrient (Carbohydrates, Fat, Protein) so that you may achieve your goal. You will find it very fulfilling to eat better, (sometimes eat more!) And know that the effort will pay off! The results on weight loss and diabetes can be very promising if one carefully follows the DietSensor nutritional coach guidelines, as its programs are based on scientific research validated by the relevant health authorities, and built by doctors and dieticians. https://www.dietsensor.com
This is terrible nutrition information. You shouldn't base your health on the number of calories in you food, but what's in those calories.
She is absolutely right. Food is NOT medicine. Food is just food. It's neutral. Your choices are your own to make, and denying yourself things that you love when you're trying to lose weight is utter and complete stupidity. If you do this, you are setting yourself up to fail. You WILL go back to eating these things in the end - the goal should always be moderation. ... I exercise. I work out. I do these things BECAUSE I want to drink wine and eat dessert, and I know I won't give them up. ...
I agree with all of these except the last one. Sure, if not counting calories is working for you, awesome! But I find that when I count the calories, I will have less of the high calorie / low satiation foods (e.g. butter, bread, cheese) simply because I'm thinking about it, and when I spend long periods just guesstimating, the portions will creep up. As I understand it, that's pretty typical. Counting is hard work and not for everyone, but I think it usually does change your meals which is part of the point.
I rather love the visual comparison as it shows the truth that can be hard to see. Been trying to get my family to see this for a while
This is a brilliant message - the main thing to think about in a diet is MODERATION. Nothing else matters unless you have special circumstances (eg Diabetic) :)
sure it does, you eat this stuff you will be in the hospital as a diabetic, calories do not mean anything, carbs and fats do, carbs especially refined carbs will spike your insulin badly , calories do not mean anything

Load More Replies...but what about sugar content and saturated fat? i would rather eat more cals than eat more sugar.
This was one of the worse waste-of-time slideshows ever. Why? Because it is just someone saying whatever. Eat milk chocolate if it makes you happy, eat sugar pasties if you makes you happy -- whatever!! For one thing, changing fat for sugar was the 1950s-2000 diet trend because ounce for ounce, sugar/carbs has fewer calories than fat. But lo and behold, when people start to look at diets as a real science, and not a half-baked information pseudoscience, we find out that the body is a lot more complicated than that. The 'caloric' content of food actually is NOT the end-all be-all of weight gain, because our our bodies aren't simply 'burning' energy here and storing the excess, we are absorbing, digesting, and responding to what we eat metabolically. Some foods will make our metabolism slow down, some will make us hungrier, some will make us fuller, some will pass through us more, some will absorb right in. The biggest diet problem is sugar and carbs. Period.
Again Calories are just a measurement of heat energy, how long it can literally burn for. It doesn't dictate how all the other macro and micro nutrients are utilized and absorbed within the body. Everyone also absorbs and utilizes nutrients at different rates based upon their own body chemistry. Nutrition isn't some simple math problem, it's way more complex than this. If it were, I should have had no issues gaining 40- 50lbs which I always wanted, and been a 200lb bodybuilder. Reality set in, and my High metabolism body will not let me get over 160lb, Keyword - Metabolism It doesn't matter how many calories I eat, my metabolism, hormones, efficiency of various organs, lifestyle, etc etc etc dictate how your body stores everything
The variables might not be obvious but it's a math problem.
Load More Replies...This is total nonsense! I am a type one diabetic. This holds no nutritional value. There is absolutely nutrients in everything you put in your mouth and it all matters!!! Otherwise there would be no diabetes
Knowing how many calories are in what you are eating is good, but there is more to think about than just calories. 188 calories of almonds is NOT the same as 188 calories of chewy candy. Almonds are a source of omega 3 fatty acids, fiber, and protein. As a vegetarian those are critical things to think about. That candy just has sugar. Same goes for smoothies, and other foods. Calorie counting without taking anything else into consideration will lead to malnutrition.
This article was about weight loss not nutrition. Why put another barrier in front of someone digging out of a hole?
Load More Replies...I've never really thought about calories but more about the other stuff in it and not how much calories is amounts to.
Yes. This BP article is incredibly badly composed. The conclusion is quite good and sensible about overall diet but the initial statements and comparisons between the foods is complete BS. The disagreements in these comments and the same confusing, contradictory and illogical responses by the original poster just reflect that.
Actually this post points and questions the ruling idea behind any diet that is meant for weight loss which is calories limit, showing that the difference in calories terms between healthy foods and junk food,in the real portions a normal person needs to eat not to be hungry,is almost the same...and here comes a BIG question scientists should answer, since 2 people with same activity both are eating the same calories of junk food, why one of them gains weight and the other one is not.Today's nutritionists advertise their healthy diets, with nice pictures of nuts, cheese, pasta, desserts,BUT,since they keep the ruling calories limit, they will give you 4-5 almonds, when in reality a normal weight person needs a handful of almonds as a snack to stop been hungry(I am not even examining how many almonds are needed to cover daily nutritionist needs),same for many other foods. My understanding is,top 3 things that cause weight gain are wheat, processed sugar, cut them off and you have weight loss.
This is a load of rubbish... you can gain weight on a caloric deficit... no wonder she's just a blogger
You cannot gain weight on a caloric deficit unless it's the weight of water or food in the digestive track. Unless you're suggesting there's proof that we've broken the laws of thermodynamics in which case you must report to authorities at once because you've discovered unlimited free energy.

Load More Replies...Stupid and dangerous. Is this person is a nutritionist? Not everything is about calories or losing weight.
Show me one nutritionist who had a real weight problem, nutritionists know what the problem is, but can't really relate to people who have that problem. Those people have to take care about what they eat and do need the calorie counting. From somebody who has been fighting his weight for the major part of his live.
