Wow this is kind of an open ended question because it also needs to take into account where you live, and where you're going.

Essentials..

1.) Any prescription medication you need.
2.) Extra cash, including an emergency credit card or prepaid card.
3.) Painkillers/fever reducers.
4.) Feminine hygiene products.
5.) Phone charger and phone.
6.) A bottle or two of water and some protein bars.

Beyond this it gets a little tricky, so don't forget that you might need to keep customizing your bag, depending.

For example if you live in an area that's prone to wildfires, you might want to toss some good masks into your bag, some burn cream or aloe, extra water for wetting a mask, etc. Or if you're in a flood plain or flood zone you might want to pack emergency ponchos (they fold up really tiny) which can help trap in body heat, extra pair of socks and oil based antibiotic cream.

This is a favorite topic of mine (my brain likes disaster planning), but it can also drive you crazy so try to do your best. Remember, survival first. Also, memorize as much as you can. Memorize your social security number or your national ID number, memorize your emergency contact info.

Don't label anything in your phone as "home" or "my place", etc. Know how to use maps or GPS on your phone. If you lose your bag or charger, put your phone into "airplane" mode, it'll make the battery last longer. If you need to call 911/999/etc. remember to give your location FIRST. If you don't know the address, use cross streets and landmarks.

I could go on and on!

I intended for it to be an open minded question so everyone no matter where they are (some of these could also be helpful for guys to) they can get help.

adding more of my reasoning here. deodorant and lip balm - you may need to reapply throughout the day depending on the weather and what you're doing. hand sanitizer and face mask - just to stay safe and prevent spreading or getting covid. mini tool kit - to fix anything that comes up for your safety. emergency cash - for getting mugged etc

An address book. No, seriously. We’re all spoiled by speed dial. Would you really know everyone’s phone number or be able to recall in a crisis or emergency situation? I didn’t think so.

All the usual, feminine hygiene products are a must. A screwdriver or better yet a multi-tool or Swiss Army knife. (You never know). Mid level reading glasses (1.50-1.75) I don’t use them and you may not either but you’d be surprised how many times you can help someone if you have them. Eyeglass repair kit. Safety pins (for wardrobe malfunctions). OTC pain meds and vitamins (always antihistamines). Bandaids. Deodorant. A makeup bag makes a perfect place for a stash of emergency supplies.

The most sensible ones are already given, so I'm not going to repeat them ;)
What I always had with me and around my neck in less safer situations was the Acme dogwhisle 210, 210/5 or 211/5.
Always comes in handy to be able to make a sound that doesn't belong where you are as it attracks attention.
Also, an extra powerbank plus the correct usb cable, just in case your phone runs out of power.
Plus, and that goes for everyone.... put a locator app on your phone. In case you loose it or gets stolen, you can almost pinpoint it to the direct location where it is.
If you are forgetfull about some pincodes, cover them as telephone numbers that you know are absolute bogus, but make them look like they are real, so for exampe replace the last or first digits with what you need to remember.
Also, remember that if you feel the need to protect yourself with any kind of weapon, please remember that those can be taken away from you and used against you... Mace will work, but accidentally spray it in a panic and the wind blows your way... you will get hit with the full dose, so make sure that if you use it, the wind is coming from behind you.
The best advice however is try to always go where your going with company.
Know the signs to give any other person so they will understand that you feel unsafe (like go sit next to someone on a bench or greet people coming towards you louder then normal and tehn add in a softer voice what's the matter.)
I hope I haven't written too many grammatical mistakes, English is not my first language.

I never go anywhere without a nail file and lip balm because they keep me from accidentally tearing my nails to bits and biting my lips when I get anxious. Also, ibuprofen, a pen and notebook, and a tailor's measuring tape (you never know when you might go antiquing or an unexpected design project pops up)!

Dark Chocolate, it tastes good (personal opinion) and it helps with menstrual cramps.

Paracetamol or any type of painkiller (especially if you get bad cramps) hair bobbles, oads/ tampons, a small hairbrush, something sugary, (a chocolate bar, small bag of haribo) a charger, tissues/ wipes, hand cream/moisturiser, extra cash (enough for a bus ticket or taxi and a bottle of water is probably good).

A long list but you can pick and choose depending on your needs. I bring most of these especially something sugary because my blood sugar is dodgy. Extra cash as well, its always useful to have enough money to get you easy access to things that might be necessary if the situation demands it.

The above and duct tape. I know. But hear me out. I have used this to fix shoes, purses, stop light under doors, hold curtains closed, stopper tubs and sinks. Weirdest- on a small aircraft the flight attendant and I used it to seal an area leaking air from the air system. It was blowing extremely cold air on my head. By the way, don’t take the huge roll, use one of the smaller packages (not sure what to call it).

I have a makeup pouch that I take with me everywhere. Inside are tissues, hand sanitizer, hand lotion, band aids, hair ties, pads, lip balm, pain killer. Band aids just in case I get a cut or a scrape. You never know.

I would also recommend keeping emergency cash at all times. For reasons such as emergency cab/subway/bus fares or, as my FIL who lived through 1970s NYC said, in case you get mugged, give them the cash first.

Not a woman, but can I add?

A couple of days worth of any prescription medication you might need, plus anything you need over the counter sometimes like allergy meds, painkillers and such. This is something I've learned to do the hard way
