Imgur user 307Jackalopes, who posted the photos of their pets and drawings online, explained that it was their wife who donated the money to the Humane Society. “She is a vet student at Washington State University. I would guess her love for animals coupled with her unique sense of humor resulted in the wonderful renditions of our pets.”
“I didn’t know she donated until she told me over the phone (we are geographically separated at the moment). So when she sent me the pictures, we were both laughing hysterically! I just had to share them with the internet so everyone else could see and maybe they would be inspired to donate as well,” the Imgur user said.

“So far, 2 out of 3 of our pets have come from the Humane Society so I feel as though it deserves people’s attention and support. I think the Humane Society’s idea to give portraits for donations is pretty awesome and unique. People seem to appreciate the humor in their efforts and it is heartwarming that so many contributed to the cause. I think the Humane Society is a worthy cause and I will gladly donate to them again!”
“Billy is our newest pet…the wife found him being blown around the interstate in, wait for it, Billings, Montana. He’s….special”

Victoria, the Communications Manager for the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County, told us that the reaction to fundraiser has been very positive. “We were so overwhelmed and overjoyed by our supporters’ and community’s reaction to this Poorly Drawn Pets post. We rely on the public’s support to care for nearly 10,000 pets each year in our community, and to be able to raise funds to continue doing so while providing so much joy to those who submitted photos as well as to our own volunteers and staff was so rewarding.”
“We even had a few folks who didn’t submit photos comment to say that seeing the photos and corresponding drawings made their day! We felt the same. It was two days of fun!” Victoria shared her and her team’s joy at the public’s response.
“We ended up sending out 239 portraits! And our volunteers had a blast making them. Our shelter is so grateful to the volunteers for sharing their time and their talents with us!”
And the great news? Victoria said that the shelter plans to do another similar fundraiser in the future, for sure. “We had no idea what to expect, but we were so excited and inspired by the work done by Wisconsin Humane and BARCS Animal Shelter that we were hopeful it would go well but it exceeded our wildest expectations!”
Victoria also pointed out that most Humane Societies aren’t related to each other and operate independently, despite the similar names.
“Worth every penny! If you’re interested, look up the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County. They have a bunch more drawings posted on their Facebook page!”
Meanwhile, Bored Panda also followed up with Angela, the Vice President of Communications at the Wisconsin Humane Society, after our previous article about their amazing drawing fundraiser. “We were absolutely floored by the public’s enthusiasm for this fundraiser! There were 5,000 comments on the Facebook post, a reach of 200,000+ on that post alone, a spot on Good Morning America, and worldwide media coverage of the campaign. We were also contacted by a dozen other animal shelters who have now launched similar campaigns; we put them in touch with BARCS in Baltimore, the animal shelter that inspired our own project! It’s been especially cool to see shelters trading information and sharing knowledge for the benefit of animals in their local communities.”
Angela pointed out that their shelter completed just shy of a thousand drawings! “Everyone had a blast drawing them, and we needed that amazing volunteer support. There is no way our staff alone could have drawn 832 pictures! We sent out 500+ to volunteers via a private Facebook group, and the rest were done in-house.”
“I don’t know if we could ever re-create the success of our first ‘Poorly Drawn Pets,’ but we’ll definitely talk about it. I can’t remember laughing so hysterically as those first drawings poured in. People love their animals and seeing them immortalized in crayon and markers lifted their spirits and made their hearts smile, even if their pup’s ears were forgotten and he now had a cape. It was awesome,” she said.
The Wisconsin Humane Society had to close its campaign 36 hours after it started because they were flooded with requests for pet portraits.
“The volunteers who wielded crayons and colored pencils have been working tirelessly to get them finished,” the Wisconsin Humane Society wrote, having raised around 12k dollars. Every donation and every portrait really left its mark.
