I Hand Carved Two Wooden Toy Boxes For Twins Designed Based On Their Favorite Toys

I had a client ask for two custom toy boxes for twins, designed based on their favorite toys.

I started this project in March 2018 and, while working between other projects, finished it in September 2018. To save myself some time, I had the boxes made at a local cabinet shop. It’s all carved by hand from oak using a variety of chisels, then I added color using Tung Oil tinted with oil paints.

Here’re some photos and a couple of videos which show the progress and final result of my carving.

I started with two sketches based on twins’ favorite toys

The first step in the process was to take the design, print it out to scale and transfer it to the wood. Here I am redrawing the design with tracing paper under the big sheet

    And the carving had begun!

Make sure you show the ventilation holes and that they are soft shut hinges in case anyone who sees this wants to try to DIY, someone might not know that a toy box needs to have ventilation. Nice carving, I like the back rest so they can function as seats too.

That's gorgeous -- your carving is beautiful, and the colors are even more gorgeous! And seeing in your bio that you're now living in a former school building, it sounds like you have room for not just yourself, but a whole artist colony to work under one roof. I'd love to get some of your carving myself -- maybe not a toy box, but a storage chest. Are you anywhere on the internet so people can order from you if they want to order some of your work?

That’s beautiful! How many hours did it take? How long does something like a toy Train or horse take? How much you charge per hour?
