Hairstylist Shows What A Hair Transformation Can Do With 32 Before And After Pics
Changing your hairstyle can do wonders for your self-esteem. Lithuanian hairstylist and founder of SelfStation, Jurgita Malakauskaitė, told Bored Panda that she has always had an innate sense for beauty and aesthetics and has known since her school days that she would become a hairdresser. She told us that her job is about more than just creating new haircuts: it’s about renewing clients’ confidence in themselves, giving them honest advice, and reminding women that they have to love themselves. “You simply make people happy,” that’s how Jurgita summed up what she does.
We’ve collected some before and after photos of the transformations that Jurgita gave her clients for you to look at, dear Pandas. Scroll down, upvote your fave transformations, and let us know which ones were your favorite and why in the comments below.
Jurgita told Bored Panda that she became a hairdresser at the age of 16. Since she was living in the small town of Mažeikiai, her parents opened up a small hairdressers’ for her to practice cutting her neighbors’ hair in. Afterward, she got her first real job and she now has over 24 years of experience in hairstyling or what she calls “creating feelings”.

Glow Up Goals
Why would it? Sure, she looks gorgeous in the second photo, but it's who she is inside that matters to her family and friends. And the beauty you see in the second photo is also there in the first, it's just "perfected" in the second photo.
Load More Replies...The problem is that the hairstylist does your hair and it looks amazing, you wash it and bam, you are back to that frizzy boring hair that can never be styled that way again :)
Wrinkles under her eye and chin also somehow have magically disappeared
Me too. Not sure why you've gotten downvotes. Presumably people expressing their preference for the "after"?
Load More Replies...radically different makeup and lighting, to eliminate facial wrinkles.
Effortlessly Bright Smiles
Of all the pictures, I would vote this one "most improved." She went from crazy looking televangelist's wife to cute.
I know right? Looks like two different people to me
Load More Replies...The first photo must take ages to do in the morning to create the wave effect, however, the second photo, makes her look healthier, happier and younger too.
Brought her into the 21st century too. People tend to hold onto the style they had the last time they felt they looked really good. But they do themselves a disservice by not updating their style. Yes, if you settle on a bob as your best haircut, get it cut in an updated bob style—-there are lots of variations now—-and don’t forget your hair color, which should also change as you age (the conventional wisdom is to go lighter, which makes for a gradual transition to gray and is a softer frame for your face). Same goes for makeup and clothing. Your basic style can always be updated and refreshed.
The face in the first photo must have been taken with a wide angle lens...because she has a whole different shaped face in the after photo. If this is the same woman...she is stunning now.
she is wearing more makeup in the first picture which is why she looks older
Chop It Like It’s Hot
Nope. Should have just styled the long hair a bit. New look is too severe.
The hairstylist told us in detail about her work process that starts by determining her clients’ type by taking into account their eye, skin, and natural hair color, as well as hair texture. She uses the names of the seasons to distinguish between her clients’ types: Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn.
For example, somebody whose type is Winter will have light eyes and darker hair. While Summer people would have light eyes and grayish hair, light skin. According to the stylist, eye color is especially important because it can have many different hues and variations.
“It’s like creating a painting. You first analyze what colors you’ll ‘paint’ with. And only after you have all of your colors ready, after you know your client’s type and look at the shape of their face and hair texture, only then do you start ‘painting,’” Jurgita said.
Glow Up Game Strong
Pretty! Softens and brightens her face. All the ladies look better with make up to bring out their happiness.
Fresh Cuts, New Vibes
The before is mostly just bad photography/lighting and no makeup...
The new hair color makes the most difference. Much more flattering.
Load More Replies...The Power of a Fresh Cut
And looks just as easy to fix as before—-just better shaped and colored.
Load More Replies...Hair burned up by too many perms. Let it grow, cut off the burned ends as they progress and get back to what is probably beautiful hair.
Load More Replies...I like that you can see her dimple in the second picture. She still doesn't look that much happier though. I definitely like the new hairstyle better.
I love it, Her hair is much healthier and cut brought out her natural curl. Brilliant cut.
With her fine features she should have gone shorter. Plus her hair is fried and over processed.
“Every person has a type,” the stylist said. Jurgita says that it’s also important to determine what the form of the client’s face and body are like and to find out what the client looks like when they’re completely natural.
“I think that every single hairdresser has to understand these things,” she pointed out and added that this is an exact science and not guesswork. She revealed to Bored Panda that she sometimes feels like an architect: except for building skyscrapers, she creates hairstyles that bring out each person’s inner potential and character.
Jurgita said that creating a hairstyle that suits a woman is the main part of her calling. However, another part is showing women that they have nothing to be afraid of by experimenting with some light makeup and lipstick until they find the look that they love best.
Chop and Glow Up
Long hair is beautiful but there’s always a point where it’s too long. Then it dominates and totally obscures all your other great features. All people see in the before picture is her hair, Whereas in the second picture her eyes and flawless skin just pop.
My friend said (70's) he used to cut his hair when he sat on it.
Load More Replies...The model is more beautiful natural, IMO, without heavy red lipstick. The stylist should have let the model keep her long tresses and trimmed off the split ends.
Yep. Completely ruined her beautiful hair....and I hate lipstick, ALL LIPSTICK.
Load More Replies...She looks very pretty, but makeup brightened her face, but she was pretty originally. She could have trimmed her long hair a bit and added wispy bangs and face framing. Still a lovely young lady.
Wow. The only thing in your repertoire was to chop it off? Beautiful colour and condition. Trim it, style it. STOP CUTTING OFF LONG HAIR!
I have been there.....everyone loves the long hair, but no one wanted to come take care of it for me! Love it!!!!
Hmmm...I think she looks more beautiful natural. She needed a healthy trim of about 6 inches and that's it. Now she looks like everyone else.
Glow-Up Goals
they gave her a bowl cut! really? I think she looks better in the first pic.
She needed colouring and an updated style but the Justin Beiber look isn't it.
Changes her completely in a great way. Color and style is very nice, as is the makeup.
Two Moods, One Look
I like the before better. The Jamie Lee Curtis from the 90's look is a little dated.
She looks like a person I would like to meet. That twinkle in her eyes - lovely
Douglas, your eye stumbled over a sad tired cliche having no current cultural relevance to an ageless icon powerhouse nor to her timeless style. Btw, there exists no era in human fashion history wherein the pompedour has not factored. You correctly free-associated the perfect framing here, yet, its application & effect is modern & fresh. With proper framing, this gorgeous woman’s entire is center stage. Silvery two-toned hair color provides depth & contrast allowing flawless skin to pop, & the cut & style provides sleek balance. Chin to hairline, her features increase proportion. Cheekbones to hairline, her incredible eyes & brows are dead center. Thus, exposing the forehead & raising the frame allows our eye to follow those amazing dimples up to her expressive eyes/brow, now center stage. (Raising/elevating the previous perspective which placed midface nose/cheekbones at center stage). Balance is further achieved by extending the frame with a bright cool lip color to compliment those bright baby blues & silvery hair, & by replacing the V neckline with a ripple effect of contrasting rounded necklines which further moves our eye, bringing the shoulders into frame. Her entire face is now in focus. Classic. Goddess sexy.
i like the hair better but the makeup makes a big difference as well.
According to Jurgita, she also helps women analyze what makes them look prettier and more womanly and how to open themselves up to comments from their social circles about what changes in how they look could work for them, instead of ignoring useful criticism.
Jurgita admitted that she tends to be more blunt than diplomatic when she communicates with her clients because she values the truth and not beating around the bush.
“Hair is energy. For some people, you have to tame their hair. For others, you have to convince them that they look beautiful and that their hair will be healthier next time. You help them understand that they have to love and take care of themselves, that hair isn’t separate from their bodies.”
Two Sides of Cool
The second pic has a weird vignette filter that hazes the model and gives a weird yellow-orange skin color. The hairstyle is tired.
Basically this is the same as #1, #3, and #8. Doesn't take a genius to know that when you do a "high & tight" from any length of hair, it is going to look dramatically different.
It is an improvement. I do wish the 2nd pic did not have the glasses so we could see how it frames the face better.
I think it’s a mistake to try to make older women look like teenagers.
New Look, Who Dis?
Great lips without lipstick; nothing wrong with the old hairstyle.
Load More Replies...What's with all those comments about red lipstick being ugly, I think the exact opposite tbh, it makes their features pop
It's all you notice and makes her look like all mouth
Load More Replies...After; harsh lighting. When showing before and after shots everything should be as equal as possible.
Second cut is better, but I can live without the faux bun effect on top.
Chic and Sharp Switch-up
The first one is FAR better. The second one, which removes the dark roots, ages the model by 10-15 years.
Not to mention how fake it looks, contrasting with the dark eyebrows
Load More Replies...It's a pretty silver color, the after, but you've sentenced her to touch-ups every 2-3 weeks.
I think this is much better. Yes the colour is a little aging if you're not used to it but this is The colour for younger people these days and can be amazing once you get used to it ignoring your preconceptions of it 😊
Fresh Bounce Ahead
I like #2's hair much, much better. Again make up makes a big difference.
I just hope these women can recreate the style on their own, otherwise it will just go back to a before picture.
That's what matters. If the person can't re-create the original, it's a 1 week improvement. Looks great tho. Nearly anything would be an improvement from the left.
Load More Replies...Fresh Cut, Fresh Vibes
The comparison would be better if they did the makeup before the hair.
New Hair, Who Dis?
Not sure what's going on with the back of her hair in the after pic. If that's hair, I'd cut it to blend with the sides and front.
Fresh Flip, Same Stripe
This one only had the subtlest of changes done, but look at the difference they made! Same basic hairstyle shape but given a lift. Still blonde, but a better color blonde. And just a touch of makeup. Makeovers don’t have to be extreme to make an impact.
The difference without the darker color growing out is always an improvement.
Load More Replies...Just washing and a good blowdry to the first look would have had the same effect
I don't see so much of a hairstyle change here as much as just the proper use of products. Yes, the color is slightly changed, but the haircut is basically the same.
Lovely, but she'll now be forced to highlight her hair every six weeks for the rest of her life.
She would look better with a reddish brown hair color, it would bring out her eyes and would be better for her complexion!
Chop to Refresh
If those were natural curls - shame on you! If not - well, fine.
All she did was straighten it out. I do the same with my hair, soon as I wash it, the curls are back. Straightening it can help with manageability.
Load More Replies...This model is adorable, IMO, but neither hairstyles really complements or frames the model's features.
Chop It Like It’s Hot
This model has really strong and IMO beautiful features. The blonde color totally doesn't work with dark eyes/eyebrows and strong features.
New style nice, but think a warm brown with golden highlights would be nicer.
New Look, Who Dis?
I have thinnish hair too. There are a lot of strands, but they’re baby fine so flatten out and don’t look like a lot of hair. Once my hair gets past my shoulders it gets too heavy and flattens itself down, so it’s time to cut it which gives it an instant lift and makes it look way fuller.
Sunglasses and Smiles
Again, I am old, and the 2nd once looks like Farrah Fawcet style circa Charlie's Angels. Now carry that comb in the back jeans pocket.
But the color is a million times better. I do see your point though. Nothing comes between me and my Calvins!
Load More Replies...Looks better than the over processed frizz it was before. But a better style would’ve been even better.
Pretty girl but . . . I just don't think long bangs look good on a person with a short forehead. The tiny bit of volume you added helped- but. Before and after makeup looks good even though it hasn't changed much, but that's okay. With just a little more work I think you could take her from a pretty lady to a killer lady. And add some hair conditioning treatments.
Curly Hair Glow-Up
Nah, in the before the top of her head looks flat. After is better.
Load More Replies...The after picture takes advantage of her lovely curly hair! Much better.
No! Too messy and unkempt looking. Soft more defined curls would be much prettier. Color is nice. Makeup pretty.
Chop or Charm?
Not digging this style, which the stylist seems to go to as a default...
No, no, no!!! She looked so much prettier on the left. Much softer. Soft wavy or slightly curly would be beautiful. Natural color is nice on her. Makeup is good. New cut looks like she got caught in high winds. Does nothing but make her look hard.
I don't care for the cut or especially the color. The old color just needed to be "zhuzhed" up a bit with some highlights. It would be much more flattering to her coloring.
From Wild to Tamed
Yes they are lovely but I know having curly hair myself, most people want the opposite from what they have! People with board straight hair will often want curls!
Load More Replies...IMO only a few of these cuts make an improvement. Most don't really change much at all, others make the lady look boyish or like a "Karen".
Fresh Start Vibes
The cut and color are awful! Again her original color is much more flattering to her coloring - she just needs some highlights. Her hair definitely needs to have a pair of thinning shears used on it. Right now it looks very heavy, like "helmet" hair.
New Hair, Who Dis?
They’ll realize their hair now has a better shape and way better color, both of which are way more flattering to them.
Load More Replies...The left model's new style is great; right model new style could use some height or bangs or smoothing.
No on both, but because styles too hard. Need softer looks. More face framing and layers. Quick curling iron shaping.
Wow when the after looks amazingly worse and you even tried filters and makeup. Fail.
For me the addition of the harsh red lips takes away from the woman on the rights natural beauty.
Glow Up Alert
No, it's a very old thing! And I don't see any need to bring it back, either!
Load More Replies...YES, Ill take the Harry Potter cut Please... with a side of matching glasses!!
No!Too much bangs! Thin and wisp them and brush style to one side. Color of hair and make up nice.
New Hair, Who This?
I would be crying my eyes out. Do you know just how many years of patience it takes to grow your hair out that long? And it’s swapped out for a crappy Moe Howard bowl cut—-which this stylist seems to favor—-in an instant. I could see cutting 6 inches, maybe even 12, off to polish her look (as she looks like a recent college grad who will be going on job interviews), but with this cut all she got was cheated.
It's a bowl cut! Starting out with so much gorgeous hair, I'd be furious.
Oh my gosh! The cut is awful! She has beautiful features and the cut does nothing to enhance them...
Fresh Looks, Same Smile
Yeah, she looks a lot older in the second picture—-and the “dewy” look makeup (which I personally have always seen as problematic anyway) just makes her look like she’s having a hot flash. Why didn’t they just cut the tail off the mullet and give her a richer brunette color and been done, as her makeup looked fine?
Load More Replies...That added 20 years. And Groucho called, please can he have his eyebrows back!
New Hair, Who Dis?
I like the 2nd but not by a great deal. Yet again, the make-up makes the difference.
Load More Replies...The fullness is a plus, but the new version also is straggly, thin, and would probably look flat and even more thin half-way through a day. The longer one you could pull back in a quick ponytail, a messy bun, and other options.
She looks wholesome in the first pic, like a streetwalker in the second one.
Agreed. She went from cute soccer mom to slutty cougar.
Load More Replies...That's different than roots showing. It's more like light highlights.
Load More Replies...New color nice. Lipstick a bit too dark. Too messy and hair is thin, so add more gentle layers.
Certainly looks better with a little make-up but styling looks a little messy . . . . .
Fresh Cut Vibes
Not understanding why the hairdresser seems to think long hair is unattractive.
And why the harsh makeup? Pretty lady, awesome before look, just needed guidance with color choices.
Load More Replies...It would be interesting to see her in bangs. I have a long face as well & look better in bangs.
Load More Replies...Should have gone even shorter, imho. The model has a very long face and neck, bringing the hair up to show it off was a good move but stopping at the shoulders is counterproductive. Keeping it straight and with no bangs to soften the look makes her forehead seem bigger too, in the after shot it almost looks like her hairline's receding, it ages her. I think she could pull off an Audrey Hepburn pixie cut, it would have been fun and lively.
Still looks like Morticia Addams - give some height and fullness to hair and maybe lighten just a bit.
Glow Up Goals
Agree. And the makeup if far too strong for such a young and beautiful girl.
Load More Replies...That is not a good hair color for her in the 2nd pic. She's gorgeous and they've done her a disservice.
Agreed. Also, she's going to have to chase the roots forever and ever with this
Load More Replies...Again, a harsh color with super high upkeep. This whole thread is weird - I originally liked the first several cuts and the color, but things went downhill fast!!
why the hell would they give this poor young woman white hair? Not only does it look awful, it will be a PITA to keep up
She would like like a young Christina Ricci with dark hair. Christina-...8eb384.jpg
I agree about the resemblance But that's not a picture of Christina Ricci !
Load More Replies...New one brings out eyes - but maybe tone down the color (makes hair look thin).
New Cut, Who Dis?
Yeah. Looks like a the stylist did a load of bowl cuts on here.
Load More Replies...The "before" looked better; the "after" is just another bowl cut with a bit of makeup.
They have zero imagination or sense of style, that's what.
Load More Replies...What is with the bowl cuts and that pink ? I thought she looked pretty in the first one.
Yes, it's quite incredible what changing your hairstyle, a professional beautician, a better pose and lighting and a bigger smile can do for you. I bet a lot of these women would look just as fantastic with their old hairstyle and the same make over.
True: it would be a fairer comparison if all that changed were the hairstyle... no smiling, no extra makeup, etc. Obviously this has a subliminal effect, as it's used in adverts all the time.
Load More Replies...This is actually less horrific than usual lists of “makeovers”, but yes, I agree.
Load More Replies...Bob everyone's hair and dye it an inhuman shade of pink? All of these after photos look like ventriloquist dummies.
BG, Jace is right, you obviously did not see made up "ventriloquist dummies".
Load More Replies...Oh goody, another "transformed their look completely just because they got a haircut and style" post, when actually in most cases the hair is the least of the changes - the "after" photo is with makeup, different clothing, perfect lighting, and photoshopping.
