actually, most americans do not need- and do not have guns, but generalizations are fun. Pew research indicates only 30% of americans own firearms (substantial, but not 'most'. No, BP, we are not fearful of all the things you listed. A lot of us are taught from an early age how to shoot a gun, plus we receive more training in the military. We like to go hunting or simply shoot targets. We can't depend on the police to show up when we need them. Where I live, it takes police nearly an hour to get to here. I live in a very rural area off the main road. Am I supposed to let an intruder ransack my house and attack me and my family? No! I can guarantee that a little tube of mace on a key chain isn't going to work. I'm not placing my family's safety on that or any other "non-lethal" toy. They will be met will lethal force. They will be given the opportunity to leave, and if they don't, then it's open season. We also have to contend with 4-legged intruders like coyotes and bears, and sometimes rabid wild animals. Simply trying to "shoo" they away will likely get you bit or mauled.

It would be alright, if everyone had to have licence to own a gun..just like driver's licence..Imagine if everone who turned 18 could just buy a car and drive wherever they want..How many people would be in a danger? Vilma, everyone does have to have a licence to own a gun. It's just like a car. And you have to do a background check for criminal history (you don't have to do that with a car). Look it up if you don't believe me

Yes, but America is not in a war (not in their own country)..But ok and why there are so many people against gun control? In my country some people also have gun, but they had to pass tests (they must be physically and mentally healthy) and the gun is registered. You can't just go and buy a gun. I can remember only one case when somebody shot randomly to the crowd, so I think this system works quite good.

Personally, I'm all for the 2nd amendment, carry permits and universal background checks, a universal waiting period to trasnfer/purchase firearms, with private sales brokered by licensed people. I'm not for restricting magazine sizes, because it's ineffective, an 'assault weapon ban' because there's no such thing as an 'assault weapon' (it's a buzzword. and no, we can not buy and own assault *rifles*, those violate title two.) and I'm not for 'mental health checks' because most propositions put too much power into a shrink's hands- and usually without a sense of recourse. gun control won't change until American politics changes to make being moderate... profitable. Besides, the democrats only care about gun control because of the money it brings in, and zealot minions who vote as they're told.

The NRA supports mental health checks. Not sure where this theory started. @Diane A in my household (myself and my wife) we own 12. We each carry every day (2), we keep 1 in our cars (2), I have 3 that are strictly hunting related (3), I have 2 collector guns that I have never even fired (2) and we keep 3 guns hidden around the house that we can access at a moment's notice. I have about 14,000 rounds and I also do 3-Gun competitions. All of them serve different purposes. Much like vehicles. You cant just make a sedan and expect a family of 7, police, truckers, EMTs, and motorcyclists to just be happy and make due with 1 type of car. Guns are very much the same way.
