50 Posts About The 80s And 90s That Today’s Kids Probably Won’t Get, As Shared On This Facebook Group
No matter what we do or how we feel about it, time keeps marching forward. And while reminiscing about the past can be a double-edged sword, providing both melancholy and comfort, the Facebook group 'Grew Up In The 80's and The 90's' invites people to do just that.
Though this online community is quite young even by the internet's standards (it was created in January 2019), 1.6 million people have already joined it, sharing everything that they remember from the two decades.
So whether you want a strong dose of nostalgia or simply to learn what the good old days were all about, we invite you to check out these handpicked posts we gathered from the group.

The word nostalgia was first coined in 1688 by Swiss physician Johannes Hofer, who defined it as a neurological illness of continually thinking about one's homeland and longing for return.
It wasn't until the 19th century that nostalgia began to be seen as a positive sentiment, rather than a pathological condition. The legendary Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, for example, viewed nostalgia as a way of reconnecting with our past in order to understand our present. For Jung, nostalgia was a way to access the "collective unconscious"—the shared history and experiences that we all have as human beings.
And looking at the content of this group, one can definitely see where he was coming from.

There was never enough room to write most of the titles on one line, mine always ended up with tiny text I could barely read 😁
Best part was when you made one for your crush, sent it by mail, and some time later received another one from them. Sweet memories.
Load More Replies...If somebody handed you one of these it meant that they wanted to hold your hand on the way home from school. It was the teenage version of an engagement ring. Also, the time and effort that went into one of these makes it quite a romantic gesture.
I no longer have the physical mix tape my husband gave me when we were dating, but when I hear certain songs on the radio, I remember, "That was on the mix tape!" 💚
Load More Replies...But did you record it off the radio or tape-to-tape? Radio would have required real dedication.
My hand writing is ugly but on those cassettes I wrote slowly and methodically like a calligraphy master
One of the RJs here was terrible for yapping long into songs and way before the ending. He pissed off my mom when one of her favourite songs came on and he kept muttering c**p half through the song and then prematurely cut off the song before it was done. Everyone would be yelling at their radios SHUT UP lol. Back then, unless you had the album or got a smooth recording off the radio, that was your only chance of hearing a rarely played song. It was especially annoying when a seldom played song came on the radio but the host wouldn't say who the artist was or what the song was called, or just the name of the song, as if it helped when you were at the music store. I wish I was able to record more music video playlists. Some songs I had just found after 20+ years of searching.
Load More Replies...We didn't just make mix tapes for juvenile romantic reasons, these were how I and many of my friends discovered music. I would never have heard the Dead Kennedys, Violent Femmes, Psychedelic Furs, XTC, The Cure, Pixies, B******e Surfers, Sonic Youth... frankly, too many others to name... if it weren't for the network of sharing mix tapes in my high school. EDIT - Seriously BP, censoring bu++h0l3?
Bang on. First heard Surfa Rosa on the other side of a Dead Kennedy’s compilation. Quality of recording was terrible, but blue a fuse in my mind :)
Load More Replies...Making these was an art form, you really really really had to like someone to make one for them.
It was the sitting around listening to the radio waiting for it to come on that will never get replicated
Omg, look at these songs, some 12 year old had a crush on someone...(me, it was me)
The hours spent with friends making the ultimate mixed tapes. Fun times.
Mine was a burnt CD with trying to fit all the song titles/groups/bands/singers names on it
Circa 2002, every month I was looking for new rock/metal video clips from Limewire or Soulseek in hope that someone has any to share and I was creating CD collections for my friends. They loved me for that because I was the only guy in our class with internet connection strong enough :-)
Growing up (I was born in 73) a mixtape wasn't just a DIY compilation of songs it was a tape made by a DJ (or somebody with DJ equipment) with songs that were actually mixed or "blended" together using techniques like beat matching, etc.
I still have the mix CD my high school sweetheart gave me for my 17th birthday. Those were the days!
Still have one of these that someone made me way back when....full art/drawings on every bit of the outside and the inside...absolutely loved it (and still do) :)
We also had the time to decipher the lyrics and take time to make it special. I wish I had my old mixtapes from back then because people did take so much time, they actually gaf about you.
I just last year throw away all my old both my home made mixed and those I bought, but not before I had looked every tune I wanted on Spotify and put them safe and sound (🤪) in the library. To be honest fellow 80:th/90:th people, how many of the tunes both on bought tape and vinyl was really good. You bought it for ONE tune, maybe two, but the rest…
Trying to record a song that has not got someone speaking just as it ends.
Jesus Jones "Right Here, Right Now" was the first song I ever recorded on tape! Love that it's on this one too!
Naughty by nature and then CELINE?! I'm seeing things. That cannot be real.
That was the good thing about the old reel tape recorders. The boxes were much bigger. More room to write in
Love a good mix tape. Still love a compilation album but Spotify will do.
And sometimes you had to tape the songs as they came on the radio, so the first few seconds of the song were always missing.
Too bad this particular mix is Garbage! Everyone knows these songs, but that doesn't make them good. 😜
I have about 20 of these. Some I made, some an old beau made for me. I still have a double tape deck. Would never part with any of it.
oh... wow... I suddenly... want to listen to all these songs... BWAHAHAHA MARKY MARK!!!!!
is nobody gonna talk about how effortless the handwriting is???? mine looks like a man dies while trying to write chinese :')
I just labelled mine for the mood I set them up for: Driving to school mix, Vacation mix, Annoy the neighbors mix, etc
You should see my collection of 600+ Grateful Dead tapes from back in the day. Each one is a piece of art!
Me too! Mixtape on cassette, then burned onto CD, THEN converted to digital music. Just trying to keep up with the times, cause they are changing!!!
Anyone else sit there with a calculator and paper figure the times to see which ones could fit together on the same side?
Lol listening to the radio hoping your favorite songs come on pointer finger at the ready to hit record
I still have some of my mix tapes. My favorite is the one I made from recorded songs from the radio. 😂😂
Googling some of these titles to see what did I miss from the 90's
This was my first atempt at making a budget, trying not to cut songs but also not leaving an incredibly long blank space...
I made a mix tape for my crush who was moving away so he would have some road tunes on the way. Still love him.
Oh my god! Sooooo many memories...I had a pen pal who I would make mixed tapes for!!!
I had a classmate, a real music buff who knew every band, who made mixtapes, but each song was put on it in the length of 1 minute. He claimed that every song is the same after 60 seconds. He also told us that one day computers would be connected worldwide. We laughed about him and thought that he was crazy. Later he went to New York and became a leading person in the 9/11 conspiracy. Now he is back in our hometown and I plan to write a novel about him.
This reminds me that there are parts of the 90ties I have repressed. "Oh oh oh, or are you just having fun?" Aaaaarrrggghh!
Mixtape? Someone who likes Naughty by Nature and Prince also like Michael Bolton and Cher? Looks more like a complete pirate of a NOW style album to me.
Some people have eclectic tastes. Looks like this was specifically a Billboard top 10 mix tape, so the thing they have in common is that they were all radio hits.
Load More Replies...Over the past decade or so, some comprehensible literature on the psychology of nostalgia has developed. Research shows that people engage in nostalgic reverie mostly when they're feeling low in an attempt to boost their mood and self-confidence.
Experimental evidence indicates that nostalgia is experienced as an overwhelmingly positive emotion. It not only has the power to boost one's mood but can increase a sense of meaning in life as well. Furthermore, it also raises self-esteem and optimism for the future.
However, some, like University of Southern California psychologist David Newman, argue that these effects may be due more to the experimental setup than to the true nature of nostalgia.

Exploring the relationship between nostalgia and mood, Newman and colleagues performed a time-lag analysis, meaning they correlated people's feelings of nostalgia with mood later that day and the next day.
The results showed that mood tended to remain low throughout that time period. This suggests that nostalgia is either ineffective at boosting mood or that it even causes feelings of depression. Other possible negative effects of nostalgia include:
- A sense of loneliness and isolation;
- Dwelling on the past and becoming unhappy with the present;
- Becoming less likely to take action in the present.

But what is it about these two decades that people remember? Well, in the 1980s, many embraced a new conservatism in social, economic, and political life, characterized by the policies of U.S. President Ronald Reagan and, in the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
For some, the 1960s and 1970s had been a troubling time: the countercultural movements of the era, the Watergate scandal, the Vietnam War, the energy crisis, rising crime, and inflation had undermined Americans' confidence in their fellow citizens and in their government. But the 1980s are often regarded for the opposite, namely its materialism and consumerism.
This period also saw the rise of the "yuppie," an explosion of blockbuster movies and the emergence of cable networks like MTV, which introduced the music video and launched the careers of many iconic artists, and the emergence of the AIDS crisis, which would go on to kill more than 700,000 people in the U.S. alone.

Similarly, the 1990s is also often remembered as a decade of relative peace and prosperity. The Soviet Union fell, ending the decades-long Cold War, and the rise of the Internet ushered in a radical new era of communication, business, and entertainment.
Canadian novelist, designer, and visual artist Douglas Coupland thinks that for North Americans and Europeans, the 1990s possessed a sense of happiness that seems long vanished.
"Money still generated money. Computers were becoming fast easy and cheap, and with them came a sense of equality for everyone," he wrote. "Things were palpably getting better everywhere. History was over and it felt great. I also remember working at Wired magazine, though, in 1993, and having a discussion about the internet with one of the editors, Kevin Kelly. The thrust was that there was an internet, sure, but there was nowhere to go. Kevin said, 'Nonsense,' and took me to a website showing a slowly downloading weather map of Northern California and southern Oregon."

So what can we do if we think about those times and find ourselves in a bad place instead of a good one? Experts suggest to:
- Think about the present moment. What are you doing right now that you enjoy?
- Make an effort to connect with others in the present. Spend time with people you care about. Talk to them about your positive memories.
- Do things that make you happy. Listen to music, go for walks, and watch your favorite movie.
- Talk to a therapist. If you're feeling particularly down, talking to a therapist can help.
- Be mindful. Be aware of how much time you spend dwelling on the past.

This should honestly be re-titled as ""Only People Who Grew Up In The ’80s And The ’90s in the USA Will Understand" I mean, I knew a few of these (despite being born in '95 that is) but once again, very US themed. xP
Anywhere on the internet, this type posts are almost all about Americans. No problem with that, but it's false advertising for many people. You're right, they should retitle these articles
Load More Replies...I will leave you with three movie titles: The Last Starfighter, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Big Trouble in Little China.
It’s funny, I always read these “only 90s kids will understand” posts, and I remember and understand over half of them. I was born in 2004, a lot of this stuff was still around when I was young
I find it so interesting to go through lists like these, even though I really don't get a lot of things (I'm was born in 2007) But I love learning a little bit more and some things I know too! I know and love Alf for example too :)

As someone who grew up in the '80s, this really made me smile - so I'm clearly old - don't judge, the '80s were the best!
I love to see these because it radiates "back in my day vibes". almost everything listed here can be modernized and boom, younger generations experienced it too.
