Stray Dog ‘Films’ His Cruel Life In India With A Go Pro

Stray dogs are a big issue in India. There are many of them roaming the busy streets, looking for food and shelter. Most of these dogs are abandoned by their owners when they decide they don’t want them anymore, some are just born on the streets. Most of these abandoned dogs have some kind of disability or illness.

This campaign was made by the Mumbai-based World For All Animal Care and Adoptions organization to show the hardships of stray dogs and what they go through. A heartwrenching video called “#AStreetDog’sLife”, which has nearly 7 million views on YouTube, shows a stray dog with a GoPro attached to him. The adorable dog spends most of his time running through busy streets, getting abused by people, and, in the more peaceful moments, rummaging through trash.

As realistic as it may seem, the viral video is actually staged, created with the help of editing, and based on cruel scenes that abandoned animals are facing every day. The creators write, “Disclaimer: No dogs were hurt in the making of this video. This video has been put together purely with video editing. The scenes only depict the various challenges a street dog faces every day in India. This video is meant to sensitize and change their current situation to a better one.”

The World For All animal shelter cares for stray animals and helps them get adopted, they also raise awareness on the big problem that is stray animals.

The dog begins his trial for survival

Homeless animals are a big issue in India. There are millions of them across the country and they don’t receive as much help as they should. There are not enough volunteers, dog shelters, and funding.

Although, the number of stray animals have never been accurately recorded, according to World For All Animal Care and Adoptions, Mumbai’s latest record of stray dogs was 5000 in 2005. Since then, there was a significant drop in these numbers because adoptions and spays/neuterings became more popular.

He is so thirsty, he even tries drinking from a closed valve

But settles for a dirty puddle instead

The hot weather is not kind to these stray dogs, fresh water is also hard to come by. That’s why they usually drink from dirty puddles or polluted rivers and lakes. It’s very heartbreaking that young, sick or disabled animals have to suffer and try their hardest to survive.

Often, these animals are victims of human cruelty. They are beaten and maimed until they require medical attention, sadly they don’t get any. Often, animals even become blind, disabled and it becomes even harder for them to survive in the scary streets.

The smell of food is tempting him

Food is probably one of the hardest things to get for a stray dog. Digging through trash, stealing or hoping for a kind passer-by are the only options out there.

Not getting hit by a car is an everyday struggle

Road accidents and casualties associated with cars are a very big problem. There are a lot of cars in these cities and they usually don’t care about stray animals or even hurt them so they would get out of the way. The environment needs to be changed so that animals could cross the street safely and with no fear.

This breaks my heart. These precious beings aren't responsible for the fact that they're born into a world (society) that has no compassion. Sadly, this is also how some so called human beings feel about humans that are disabled or homeless. Every living thing has feelings and deserves love and respect.....

I went to India this summer and I saw so many stray dogs. As a person with a dog myself, it took all my will to not break down. There was this one particular dog, and he was so hungry. He kept roaming around the food stall we were in, and I couldn't bear the sight. Bought the poor baby some biscuits. best thing I've done

((Sorry for poor english)) I think it is overrated. Yes. India is only a developing country. Still we fight our daily life to provide good nutrition to our children. Most of the indians are lower middle class(in ur western standard - poor people). We cant own a dog because it is luxurious. Bt we feed dogs. In india we didnt use the word "stray dogs". We call them as "street dogs". That means in every street , 5 or 6 dogs are living. No one owns them personally. Bt people in that street are feeding them. They are common dogs. Some people may mistreat bt most of us love dogs. In my street we have dog that is more than 14 years old. No one owns him. Bt he is our senior street dog. All r feeding him, provide water, etc. He depends on us. He never leaves our street. I know him from my childhood.

Let's understand that Mumbai is filled with desperate poor people who are in no position to provide stray dogs with a forever home. The residents are caution that stray dogs can attack and bite, carry rabies, dig through garbage, tear things up etc. Poverty is cruel to people and animals.

This is how it is in Pakistan as well. You'd be stunned be the amount of stray dogs and cats there are. There is little concept of owning a pet, and dogs and cats are considered "dirty". These beliefs stem from all the dirty strays everywhere, and the strays come from this belief that causes no one to help them. It's a vicious cycle in a sense. There is also the fact that there are so many more people living like animals themselves because of the amount and severity of poverty. Countries that struggle helping their people also struggle helping the animals

2nd.part Around the dog a large crowd of grinning and shouting men.It immediately became clear that the dog was a b***h in heat and it was being raped by male dogs. The screaming was when the men separated them by force in order to mate her with another dog. My son rushed down and tried to intervene, but was met with«you like?huh, you like very much?« They were about 20 to one so my son went back to the hostel and had them call the police.Sadly nothing came of it as the men scattered in all directions. You also see cows choking on plastic bags and it became a daily occurance pulling them out of their mouth. The cows are supposed to be revered, but little notice was given to their distress.I called an end to his «adventure« 2 months short of 6 when he broke a toe trying to defend a sleeping dog that had a man throwing his bicycle on it.He wanted to kick the man away, but hit the bike instead.I was proud of him, being alone in a dodgy neighborhood and still brave enough to take action.

There are a couple of comments downplaying the plight of the Indian street-dog.That the video is not real and that the strays are not abused and that they are feral and run around biting left and right.NOTHING could be further from the truth. The video is a soft wake.up call because the reality is SO cruel and heart-wrenching that it should come with a WARNING !! My youngest went to India with a group of friends a few years back.It was supposed to be a 6 months live the life/work/travel/see the authentic life in India. We as a family are huge animal lovers and have had a large number of rescues...right now 2 pampered Galgos are buried in blankets on the couch. One night I received a call from him and he was convulsive. The group had arrived in Mumbai, checked in at a hostel and were fast asleep when my son was awakened by agonised howling. He looks out the window and sees a dog tied by its neck to a tree, but so it´s front-paws did not reach the ground. 1st part

India slum don't care no animals, they have dog and cat meat menu so there is no surprised animals got abused there. The more I see the younger people saved these animals from the street and help them to get adopt, hopefully more people will get involved and educated them.

A lot of the street dogs are NOT abandoned, since owning a dog is luxury in India! People cannot afford food for themselves and their kids! Replace the dog with a homeless person in India, same story. :( I'm Indian, but yes, poverty and lack of resources is bad. Dog, cow, human, same story.

India. Home of the vegetarians. Home of the worst animal abuse on the planet. I support The Brooke, which educates people who have equids that work for them in order to live basic hand-to-mouth existences. Brick kiln donkeys, etc all lead horrible lives. India treats people like dirt, how can we expect that animals are treated better?

The video is staged though. Not to detract from the message, but, it says so at the end that it is edited and no animals were harmed. Also, Let's not paint a whole society with the same brush... yes, people have less compassion when they are struggling to survive-- the same goes for any poor country. That said, I'm sure that there are people in India that care for stray dogs, or at least aren't cruel to them. Someone from India above mentioned that in his neighborhood they consider the stray dogs their street dogs, and they feed them and grow up with them.

Disclaimer at the end: "no animals were harmed in the production, all acts of cruelty depicted were done through editing." Indians don't keep slapping/hurting dogs. Yes, we have stray dog problem, but the situation of Humans is worse than dogs here. This video instead of understanding the problem, it is simply showing how bad Indians are. Here majority of the people cannot afford 3 times meal for themselves, and people are saying "Why don't they adopt dogs?"!

I hate seeing things like this, but at the same time...things like this need to be seen. I am only able to save one four legged baby at a time and in my adult life have only been able to rescue four, one of whom was severely abused before she found love and safety in my home. These precious babies don't deserve the suffering they endure, all they want is to be loved. They need food and they need shelter, but they desire compassion and love.

The reason I somehow hate human, I know animals are pesky sometimes but in the first place we intrude their territory hunt and domesticated them. Tons of animals are almost dependent to humans that now are neglected or rejected it's hard to accept that many people still contributes to the hardship of this animals where they only want is to survive just like us. A little caring to them doesn't hurt, a little kindness isn't that hard and a little love doesn't make us lose something. I hope one day we would realize it and it's not too late for a change.

Do you also shout "dirty f*****g savages" to the American corporations that ruthlessly and inhumanely kill hundreds of cattle an hour for the meat industry or is it just when you see this propaganda design to evoke your emotions?

From the article - "Most of these dogs are abandoned by their owners when they decide they don’t want them anymore," .... this is patently b******t from PETA types who specialize in propaganda. Unlike the Western countries ... the Indian subcontinent has a few *land races* of dogs ... aka originally wild and feral animals which live all over the country ... we didn't kill off all our dogs in the name of urban safety like other countries ... just like we still have megafauna like elephants, multiple deer and antelope species and felids (big and small cats) and ursids (bears) in the wild, both protected and not. And many other so-called developed countries had their own canid species, which they wiped out. So the fact is dogs being a very capable opportunistic and often animals living in packs are pretty common across urban, rural and wild India (and the rest of the subcontinent). In fact wild life and livestock depradation by wild dogs is a very real thing here, go cry elsewhere.

I stayed in India (Uttar Pradesh) for about 6 months in 1997. It was the most depressing place in the world. Nevermind the dogs - I regularly saw kids - often very young, standing almost naked in traffic begging for coins or scaps of food. I saw several bodies along the roadside - some were kids. I assume they were hit by cars. I felt like India in those days was a heartless distopia.

Oh, please. This video is purely tearjerking click-bait, meant to evoke emotional reactions from gullible people who don't know any better. Stray dogs are an absolutely menace here in India, along with a number of other species of stray animals seen on our streets. Street dogs by far outnumber all other animals. They dirty the place up with their leavings and plunder rubbish bins without mercy. And people here actually feed them on a daily basis, with food fit for human consumption. They grow robust, roaming in packs, terrorising children and the homeless. They're usually given a wide berth and rarely harassed. Some are fat enough to block traffic when they lie in the middle of the street. People paint murals and graffiti to eulogise dead strays in my part of town. And I live in the same city the video depicts. Stray dogs are treated better here than some humans.

This ruined by day. It breaks my heart to see animals treated this way. I wish that everyone could rescue a dog (and any animal of course). If i wasnt allergic to dogs I would rescue and foster tons and help others in need.

I was waiting for someone to say this. This is what life is like for poor homeless children and even adults. In the western world people have more empathy for animals than human beings.

Just shows what people really do when they don't know they are being filmed, gives you a true insite into what India's are like, and compassion seems to be very low on the list,

It's a staged video. If you read description you would know that: “Disclaimer: No dogs were hurt in the making of this video. This video has been put together purely with video editing. The scenes only depict the various challenges a street dog faces every day in India. This video is meant to sensitize and change their current situation to a better one.”

I've lived in India for 3 years and I'm sorry to say this but I don't want to set my foot on that land. I've adopted my dog from there when she was 1 month. The thing is they pray to animals but at the same time this kind of thing happens. Why? You don`t cut a tree but you hurt a dog! The only thing I can say Shame on us for being like this.

Just drop by in any random street in India and you can adopt may be 5 or 20. No paper works needed. Just don't go dogs that are actually cared for by people because there are street dogs and "The street dogs".

many countries don't hold animals to the same values as those in the west. Some don't practice having animals as pets, they are purely functional beings.
