Whether you’re an avid thrifter or an online reseller, you are probably familiar with Goodwill retail stores. However, did you know that Goodwill also has another type of store? They’re called Goodwill outlet stores and are also known as Goodwill pay by the pound stores, Goodwill weigh and pay stores, or Goodwill bin stores.

Shopping at Goodwill outlet stores is a rather unique thrift hunting experience. A small handful of items may be sorted and put in bins separately, including clothing; this is an exception rather than a rule. Items are brought out in large blue bins which the shopper will have to sort and dig through themselves in order to find the gems.

Goodwill employee, in case anyone is wondering, brands like Kate Spade, Coach, etc. usually go to Goodwills online store, but if they are not in the best of condition they will be sold in store. What probably happened was they had been sitting on the shelf to long and they went into the bin when their tag color was due to be pulled. (aka either thrown out or put into salvage to be sent for recycling) It kills me when we have to salvage good items like this.

I've mentioned this on BP before. One of my greatest thrift purchases is an authentic snakeskin Fendi clutch that I got about 10 years ago for $11. It was out on the open floor and not behind the glass where all the counterfeit Coach and LV bags were being displayed 🤣

Yup! SO MANY NAME BRAND PURSES AT GOODWILL LIKE THIS! And especially vintage leather ones in actually pretty good condition that require no more than a wipe down. I’ve got about 8 such purses including Kate spade, Tory Burch, even a LV leather luggage bag for a combined $150 total that was worth far more! I’ve left behind far more because I don’t believe in buying things I won’t use or can’t give to someone I know who’ll use it, but man, if you want a good bag I’d suggest going to the thrift store first to save hundreds if not thousands of dollars!

I worked for two different Goodwill companies (yes, cities and regions have all different companies, under the Goodwill umbrella). Many Goodwills no longer sell "brand name" items like these because knockoffs are getting so good that only an expert can tell if it's the genuine item

I think this is a real one, but an older one ±1985. You can have this checked but I wouldn't bother, a nice scarf is a nice scarf. I work in the industry and I know they changed it to Burberry some time ago. So there's no longer an s at the end now. However yours looks legit up to the font they used in older editions and the way the design and mohair looks in this photo...fakes usually have a finer black yarn or bristle woven in. NEVER ever has a label read Burberry's!! Anyway, hope you get to enjoy it! 😉

Something about people who were like oh i bought it to resell or I got this amazing find then found another of the same but still bought both just rubbed me the wrong way- like maybe someone else could’ve used that vitamix or kithenaid instead of you having two for no real reason.

Yeah I’ve been wearing stuff from thrift stores since I was a kid too poor to really get anything else, but my mom always made sure we looked nice so I wasn’t picked on for it. I still refuse to pay full price for most clothes because I like the aspect of recycling and saving loads of money especially on name brand items for myself or people I know will use such gifts if I get it , but now everyone is so focused on the resale value of everything that it can be hard to even find good hauls anymore. And especially people who will buy it all up just to resale it and not leave it behind for people who legit need it, like buying a good plus size dress just to resale when that is very needed and hard to find, it sucks!

I'm with ya on that. It's also aggravating because 9 times out of 10, they sell the stuff for way more than they paid for it. I'm all for making money for yourself, but when you're charging hundreds of dollars for an item you got for $20, it just seems really greedy to me. I am not a fan of resellers.

Agreed, but by time it gets to "the bins" it is about to be sent to a landfill. That said my favorite find at the bins was a pair of thigh high rubber boots in size 4: I knew a lady with tiny feet who worked in road maintenace and the smallest available to her were size 6. But I sold them to her for the $4 I paid for them.

I’m a recovering hoarder and I’ve had to stop shopping at thrift stores because they’re just too tempting, like an alcoholic going into a bar. I probably shouldn’t even read lists like this, TBH. I can’t help think when people buy two of something that’s a red flag.

I feel the same way, my mom dressed us in thrifted clothes and I have always loved the "hunt"- I feel like reselling has ruined that treasure hunting vibe of it. I've refrained from buying something I only "kind of" like because I want someone who loves that item to take it home and get joy from it (even if I know I can resell for $$). People are looking for the money they can make, not looking for items they will love and use themselves. It makes me sad to see it.

Unsorted donations. When someone donates we usually sort clothes and other items before they go out on the sales floor, I'm guessing some Goodwills have sale days where you can get a discount for going through them? I'm not 100% sure as my store sadly doesn't do this. Editing to add this link explaining the bins. https://www.dinasdays.com/how-to-shop-the-thrift-store-bins/ apparently when an item gets pulled from Goodwill it gets swnt to an outlet store before being sent for recycling and these outlet stores are all bins. The more you know. Lol.

Benchmade 535 and Benchmade 555 pocket knives in like-new condition. Blades are still razor sharp. Price was one dollar each in the kitchenware section of a charity thrift store. Total retail price for the pair is about $270. Knives-631...a98ab8.jpg

Were you able to verify they're real? I contacted the company awhile back about a flood of knives being sold on Wish and Ebay. They said all the ones on Wish were identical, high-quality fakes and they couldn't do a thing about it.

I used to leave quite a few of my toys at my grandmother’s house because I visited all the time. Then I showed up one day (circa 1983) and asked where my Micronauts were. She threw them out—not donated, but trashed!—because I seemed too old for toys. She wasn’t being mean, she just literally thought, “Well, he’s 12 now, so I guess I can throw these away.” Same with the Lite-Brite.

I used to look at things like this and get super down becuase I could never find something cool, but i recently decided to give thrifting another shot. We went to 2 local stores. I found a vase with 2 round glasses for propagating plants, which was literally exactly what I had been looking for for ages. I also got a medium sized bottle with a cork lid, turned it into an terrarium. And a little vintage decoration thing with swans and eggs. Very cute. Overall I spent $10

"The Bins" is slang for the Goodwill Outlet Centers where they give people first dibs on donated items. They call it "the Bins" because they literally wheel out big bins of stuff and then it becomes this crazy free-for-all. You have to watch your cart and cover it with a blanket or something because sometimes people will steal stuff right out of your cart. Depending on the day and location, it can get pretty crazy. You can find out where yours is by going to the goodwill website and looking at the locations link. The closest one to me (I live in Naples, Florida) is in Fort Myers, about 45 minutes away. It's recommended that you bring a "wing man" because it can get a bit hairy sometimes.
