So, what’s a good boss? Funnily enough, explaining what a bad boss is first is the easier task. Brace yourself as it’s about to get super crunchy (get it, because numbers and facts?).
The tl;dr explanation is that a bad boss is any managerial persona who’s confrontational, unkind, unaccommodating, or unmotivated. This can manifest in a number of ways: lack of leadership skill, use of micromanagement tactics, and exceedingly high demands for employees, just to name a few.
This is besides lacking any sort of positive human qualities, thus prompting for hostility, avoiding providing help where needed and just being flat out disrespectful. So, 13%. A 2018 study done by the Institute of Labor Economics dove deep into how common bad bosses are in a discussion paper series of theirs. The need for the study arose for a number of reasons. Most notably, it was the increasingly common media and movie representation of bad bosses, the Peter Principle (whereby managers were often promoted to positions one level above their realistic aptitude) and the more recent concerns of stress and psychological ill-health in workplaces.
The study also premises its research with a number of factors. A key aspect was that supers, managers and the like exert a great deal of power in the workplace, and this has a significant impact (either positive or negative) on employees and the way the company operates. This includes a direct correlation with performance and results.

According to the study, the most bad-boss-laden industries were transportation (a bit above 17%), manufacturing (16%), and human health and social work activities (nearly 15%). I sent my boss back then an email telling him I need a few days off, I was going to join an animal rescue party to help lost pets caught in the flood (and help families who got hospitalized and couldn't take care of their own pets). I got a reply back saying it's unacceptable for me to take time off for that. I was furious at first only to discover that what he actually meant was that I will be doing it on the company's time and not spend my vacation days. He also hired a minibus to help me and the other volunteers.
had a dr appt during which my dr could see that something was wrong. he was the kind of general practitioner that believed in body/mind/spirit care & not just fixing the physical issues. broke down & told him i had to put my beloved dog down the day before & was just working through it. he left the room & returned w/my paperwork & a note to boss for mental health leave for two days. went back to work & gave dr papers for confirmation of appt (stupid company policy) & she saw that i hadn't given her the note-what was it? told her not to worry but she insisted. after reading she ordered me home for 2 days. when i returned discovered she had put my time off as family bereavement leave because fur babies are family. and this is just one of the things she did for me.
That’s pretty awesome. I held a surveillance position for a major corporation when my mother passed away, and discovered we did not have grievance leave. When I got the call that she was about to pass, I informed them I had to leave and management told me to take several days and they’d cover for me. When I came back to the morning briefing everyone there expressed condolences and they gave me a grocery gift card for several hundred dollars. I did cry. Mom passed in an ugly way, so I was really suffering, this was just outstanding considering the money came from my coworkers’ pockets.
