“[Am I The Jerk] For Convincing My Girlfriend Not To Wear A White Dress On Our Wedding Day?”

Weddings are supposed to be a celebration of the union of two people. Everyone should be happy, partaking in the festivities and joy should be as abundant as alcohol typically is at weddings, and then that one uncle gets carried away and starts drinking from a shoe he found that’s actually the grandmother’s, thinking it was the bride’s. All harmless fun!

Instead, the wedding hasn’t even started and the bride and the groom are fighting over the color of the dress because it has to be a true symbol of the bride’s sociobiological status signifying her purity. Yippy.

More Info: Reddit

RELATED:

Weddings are supposed to be a celebration. However, it doesn’t take much to ruin it, like throwing out demands for what wedding gown the bride can and can’t wear

Image credits: x1klima (not the actual photo)

A guy turned to Reddit for some perspective on whether he’s a jerk for convincing his fiancee to wear a dress of a particular color all because she’s not a virgin

While the fiancee agreed to wear anything but white, she couldn’t live with that idea and humiliation this entailed, so she now wants to call off the wedding

Image credits: bm.iphone (not the actual photo)

So, a couple had a falling out over a wedding issue. The guy comes from a Christian family that is very strong in its faith. So, by proxy, he notes in his post that his family has this wedding tradition that the bride wears a dress with its color aesthetic corresponding to whether she’s a virgin or not.

Because the family knew that the wife-to-be is not “pure,” the guy was more or less pressured by the family tradition (and somewhat by the matron of the family) into making sure the appropriate colors are chosen for the ceremony. This undoubtedly upset the bride, but, despite that she agreed to play along and went with a glittery blue dress. There’s probably a Disney reference somewhere there…

Anywho, the woman just couldn’t let it go and decided that she can’t accept being humiliated this way. So, it was ultimatum time: she said she wouldn’t be marrying him if this whole wedding dress color scheme was such a big deal. The guy didn’t think so, thus meaning that Reddit’s arbitrage was due.

Image credits: Neal Jennings (not the actual photo)

And, oh boy, did Reddit arbitrate the situation. The guy was dubbed the jerk immediately, for a number of reasons. First and foremost, folks were very suspicious of the guy’s level of maturity. Their comments pointed out that he is nearly a decade older than his bride, yet he’s still worried about what mom thinks.

This is besides the fact that the guy is essentially allowing his wife to be shamed by the family. Christians in the comments explained that this is unkind, judgmental and controlling, and there’s nothing Christian about that.

People also started poking holes in this family tradition by questioning why the guy doesn’t have to wear anything else if he’s not a virgin. One commenter claimed she did some digging and found out the guy’s not only not a virgin any more, but also divorced. This only adds to the irony of it all.

Ultimately, folks ruled YTA on this one as the guy’s future wife deserves better from someone who’s supposed to be her support, protection and reprise for the rest of her life. The post garnered 12,000 upvotes with a good handful of Reddit awards.

For context, I think it’s safe to say that tradition should be considered in context and the reasoning behind why folks hold on to it should be evaluated. Because the wedding is all about the bride and the groom, their union, it’s only appropriate that they get to choose what’s a meaningful way to celebrate it.

Image credits: Paula Satijn (not the actual photo)

My Dressbox explains the most common traditions, pointing out their meanings, origins and why they matter (or not). Wedding gowns were originally red, and the tradition was discontinued after Queen Victoria decided to go with white.

These days, the color is associated with purity, but just like Queen Victoria changed, the bride can do so as well. The encouragement is to wear something that the bride couldn’t wait to wear.

Other traditions, like the veil and the first look, are based on what some would call superstition. The veil is originally said to protect the bride from curses and malevolent spirits, while seeing your bride before the actual wedding was considered bad luck.

Same with the bouquet—it used to include fragrant bundles of garlic, herbs, and spices to fend off evil spirits. Same with matching dresses for bridesmaids—collective clothing identifies any “evil spirits” trying to infiltrate themselves.

If you’re not into that sort of shtick, change it. Just like Queen Victoria changed the color of the dress, everyone else is allowed to create a wedding composition that would be meaningful to them.

But what are your thoughts on this? Are you for tradition, do you prefer a more modern take on weddings? Share anything and everything in the comment section below!

And folks online couldn’t agree with her more, dubbing the guy a jerk and pointing out why this is wrong

Oh I HAD to get in here to see all the YTA comments lol. Also wanted to see if anyone said YNTA. @Adam, that is exactly what I was thinking. If they're worried about purity, how did the guy get a divorce anyways? Unless they had to get some sort of "approval" from their religion leader. Still you're telling me you didn't make the magic happen in the bedroom in your previous marriage?.. Hmm

I was wondering how far I needed to read to see this! While mom is so concerned about the lady's sex life, let's ask mom a few questions about hers. Had any oral sex, giving or receiving? How about back door action? When she gets her breath back, point out how the questions she's asking are none of her friggin business. And that business about white wedding dresses being reserved for "pure" brides is pure b******t. I hope this guy enjoys living with his mother.

Fun fact: Swedish wedding gowns, historically, were black for the working classes. You could afford maybe one fancy dress your entire life and black was way more practical than any other colour because it could also be used for mourning. Also: Virginity is such a modern myth (compared to all of human history) that it makes me embarrassed for all of humanity to think people still put a value on any other virginity than their own.

Quite so, fellow Swede - those black wedding dresses can be found all through our family album. Very festive. Especially considering the facial expressions from back then, you know, that stone face where people gave the stare of death straight into the camera. And don’t get me started at that virginity thing - it really is such a damned disgrace. It’s such a stark reminder of a time when women were seen as straight up baby factories and nothing else. “Not a virgin?! Then how can you guarantee that the bun in her oven is mine?! Hand back that dowry and let me speak to your complaint department.”

White wedding dresses were simply fashion (Queen Victoria set the trend - like some celebs today she was much copied) and for some incredibly stupid reason people associated white with pure and then pure with virginal. Complete and utter bollix.

Yes, I am a christian. Yes, I was pregnant when I married my husband, who also is the father. Yes, both my and his family knew and were happy for it and yes, I wore white. Because it is the fresh start on a new path, one that we will take together from now on. Yes, we're still married now, 25 years next year.

White wedding dresses came from fashion - nothing else. A trend set by Queen Victoria when she wore white and ladies copied her. There was nothing virginal connected to it at all at the time. It is a lot of absolute nonsense that got added later only because white looks 'pure'. Virginity is a social construct and also no-one else's business.

This kind of thing always infuriates me for a variety of reasons, but also as a bridal seamstress, most women don’t actually wear white on their wedding day—most wear ivory or off-white as those are far more flattering on most skintones. True White looks bluish in hue and washes out most brides. So most brides who are wearing “white” to their wedding aren’t actually wearing true white. And these days there is such a beautiful variety of wedding dress colors: blush, nude, gold, champagne; mine was a pinkish champagne called “moscato”. One coworker wore a light blue dress with white lace that made her look like cinderella! And literally NO ONE actually thinks the dress color has anything to do with a brides “purity” these days except for judgemental, out of touch, rude people like OP’s family.

Also, funfact, the tradition Queen Vic started was only followed by the wealthiest families for a long time, and even they usually altered and rewore the wedding gown. When it entered popular etiquette, “white” (bright white, off white, and ivory) were reserved for a bride if it was her FIRST MARRIAGE, not necessarily bc she was “pure”. Etiquette dictated that a woman getting remarried after being divorced or widowed wouldn’t wear white, but COULD wear something adjacent, like champagne, gold, darker ivory, etc. And that was less about purity and more about maturity; white was seen as appropriate for a young, first time bride. A woman getting remarried had already had her white bride moment, and now she was older, more mature, established. It was considered appropriate for her to wear a color more befitting a woman who had been an experienced wife. Not because she was no longer “pure.” Everyone would have been aware of that anyway since they would all know she had been married before.

White=purity is a false tradition. Wearing white in the Victorian days signified you had f-u money and could afford to buy a fancy dress that would be ruined after one day since dry cleaning hadn't been invented yet. But I think there is something in scripture about this. After Jesus told the accusers "he who is without sin may cast the first stone" he turned to the woman caught in adultery and told her she had to wear a blue dress from now on.

Queen Victoria set the trend as she chose a white dress to marry in - as a fashion icon of the time she was copied. That's it. Just fashion. White is not pure, pure does not equal being a virgin. Archaic out of date c**p.

It's not the dress that's the issue - it's the meaning that the family is assigning to it "She's "Impure", the s**t, and every one should know and shame her for it". "while many women today wear the color merely out of tradition, it is a myth that the color white has always meant virginity. It was originally meant to showcase wealth" from a historical article I forgot to grab the link and lost ... anyway, before Queen Victoria women who could afford it wore elaborate dresses in bold colors, because a wedding and especially the presentation of the bride was how families and nations showed thier wealth and status. I don't think people now realize how expensive white fabric once was. They didn't have the chemical bleaches we do now of the difficulty processing it to be truly white took lots of hours and effort. Double that for processing the yarns the lace which was then tatted, knitted, crocheted or otherwise produced by hand. To have the kind of dress Victoria wore, you'd have to be a queen to dream of affording it. When are we going to move past women being soiled by sex?

And this right here is why I teach my children that "virginity" is a made up concept to control and shame women and that having sex has no effect on your value as a person. You don't lose anything the first time you have sex, it's a normal thing people do as they mature and while needs to be taken seriously due to possible outcomes it really isn't a big deal when done safely. I encourage my children to be safe and sensible, but will not reduce their value to something as pathetic as whether they were intimate with a partner. Purity is a made up concept, virginity is nonsense and I will die on this hill.

So many great answers in the comments. I'd be half tempted to agree with the "impure women can't wear white" rule and then show up in a full on "whore's outfit" and when the family faint/have heart attacks/start yelling just calmly explain that "well I'm apparently impure so I thought this outfit was appropriate. I guess I'm wrong so I won't be marrying your son!"

I have been in weddings where the bride would wear some kind of ivory shade and not white, i don´t know if it was related. But knowing both brides, i can tell you it was 100% their decisions. But still, the virginity thing is way, way, way something from the past that needs to disapear. My grand mother was very religious. And my aunts were pregnant when they got married (one DIL and one daughter). I can assure you no one dared throwing nasty comments in neither cases. No one in their right mind would purposely ignite the anger of my beloved Grandma. And it was +50 years ago. Reading this in 2023 is saddening.

You're ignorant. The wedding is a bride's dream, not a grooms (in most cases) and if you're that controlling about something as DUMB as this, then God help her in the future with you. I'm not opposed to an age difference, but you're both still young (I'm 45 partner 61 together 12 years). She needs to RUN.

When I got married in '05, my mother tried to convince me that I "had" to wear an off-white dress because I wasn't a virgin. I'm very pale, and off-white makes my skin look like death. I wore white on my wedding day, and nobody cared.

YTA. BIG time. Seriously, how was your girlfriend/fiancé's past any of your family's bizz? You just publicly shamed and humiliated your bride-to-be. What would she have to do in order to get into your family's good graces, wear the scarlet letter 'A'? And excuse me, but aren't you--ahem!--divorced? How do you sit there in judgment of someone else, with your broken marriage? Would this be your attitude if some psychopath had forced himself onto your fiancé? Wow, guys like you never cease to amaze, amuse, and confuse. You want to only marry a virgin, yet think nothing of depriving other men of the privilege of doing the same. I'll bet that there's a lot of stuff in YOUR life that Mommy doesn't know about, does she? Call it a day, let the woman go and find someone who will love her unconditionally, and forego getting married. You're obviously not mature enough to handle a less-than-perfect past.

When she get married, my sister didn't want to wear a white dress because of these purity stories (old fashioned grand-parents, she is not a believer). So we found all the non-white dresses : ivory, cream... they were not white but only if you were close to her. And she bought a really nice princess-like ivory dress ! Not white... but not "not white" too :p

Someone who grew up in a Christian community and huge family, attended many weddings growing up, there were always occasional weddings where it was known that the bride was not a virgin, and they still always wore white. This thing where he thinks she shouldn't wear white is either him being very stupidly literal about the myth or making up that she can't wear white. Either it's that he is super dense or a super jerk.

The anti Christian comments are disgusting. I don’t think it is necessary to display your wife as not a virgin on the wedding day but I also don’t see a problem with the dress. I am so sick of the comments calling him a hypocrite for getting divorced (literally how can they claim that if they don’t even know the cause of his divorce).

Unpopular opinion: he and his family didn’t do anything wrong. They asked if she would participate in the custom, she said yes. Then she gets mad? The custom isn’t immoral. She agreed to it. She still gets a pretty dress and yes everyone will know she isn’t a virgin but that might cause less backlash than a non virgin wearing white.

WHITE WEDDING DRESSES WERE NEVER ABOUT PURITY. IT WAS A TREND INSPIRED BY QUEEN VICTORIA BECAUSE BRIDES WANTED TO LOOK RICH AND FANCY-PANTS LIKE THE QUEEN SINCE WHITE IS SO HARD TO KEEP CLEAN.

A lot often find out too late... my mother was told my father sulked by her future mother in law. She didn't believe her as he'd shown no sign of it whatsover. Hah! She soon learned. He only got worse as well. He would easily go months not speaking to his young children (me!) due to his sulking.

You are ignorant. A groom is allowed to enjoy his wedding. Men dream of marriage as well.

When I got married in '05, my mother tried to convince me that I "had" to wear an off-white dress because I wasn't a virgin. I'm very pale, and off-white makes my skin look like death. I wore white on my wedding day, and nobody cared.

Dear fiancee wear bright red, and then during the ceremony, refuse to say I do, then walk out. Humiliate them as much as they are trying to do you.

YTA.

What did I just read. YOU. ARE. THE. A*****E. I don't understand how a grown a*s man can humiliate his wife to his mother, (it wasn't any of his mother's briskness whether or not this girl was 'pure') and type this whole disgusting situation out with realizing this is f****d up. Good on that woman for sticking her ground. Super icky, I hope that they broke up.

I'm not a fan of white wedding dresses (they are boring af), but that's ridiculous. Why on earth should your outfit signify your sexual experience? Whether you are a virgin or not is info for you and your gynecologist, not for the wedding guests.

YTA what century are you from? Religion, greed, money the root for the human misery. It scares me when I see these kinds religious stories, destricting someone else's rights, according to a book that thousands of people have written their own views/versions on it. I wish the bride to be would have enough "balls" to ignore this BS.

You're not an AH for having religious beliefs. But if your partner does agree with them to that extent then you are probably not compatible.

Before Queen Victoria set the trend of a white wedding gown, a woman typically wore the best dress she had or had a new dress made for the occasion.

Here's a compromise - she wears white but the dress had "S-L-U-T' written in big red letters across the back. I mean, that is the family's point of view, isn't it?

You don't see a problem with making her sexual history the focus of their wedding? I bet you also go around talking about other people "shoving their lifestyle down our throats" by wearing a rainbow. You're deluded
