China Unveils Epic 1,320-Ton God Of War Statue

You’d expect a God of War statue to look pretty epic. But there’s epic, and then there’s EPIC, and this enormous statue of Guan Yu, a famous general in Chinese history who was later deified, is most definitely EPIC.

The statue of the Chinese god has just been unveiled in Guan Yu Park in Jingzhou. It’s 58 meters (190ft) tall and weighs over 1,320 tonnes, and it contains over 4,000 strips of bronze. It was designed by Han Meilin, a Chinese artist who is probably best known for his designs of the 2008 Beijing Olympics mascots, and the monument is so big that there’s even an 8,000sqm museum inside it!

Guan Yu lived during China’s turbulent Three Kingdoms period. He carried an axe-like weapon called a Green Dragon Crescent Blade, which has been immortalized with him as part of the statue. The only difference is that the weapon now weighs 136 tonnes! And though for us westerners Guan Yu is commonly known as a War God, Chinese mythology celebrates a whole spectrum of his qualities, such as brotherhood and loyalty. It is very common for a household to have little shrines dedicated to him and celebrating Guan Yu goodness.

Did we mention this God of War statue was epic?

In Chinese culture, he is rarely known as the god of warfare. He's better known as a protector of Buddhism and god of bookkeeping.

Hmm I can see why. I will give back ALL books to his library VERY fast, without ANY delay if he would be a local librarian.

It's an impressive statue but it would have been 100 times better if it was the god of peace. But then, this is in China. They have a statement to make.

It isn't what you think......In Asia Guan Yu is the God of War but he's also the God of Brotherhood, Loyalty, Protection and Honor. It may sound funny, but police stations and gangs alike often have a statue of him in honor of their camaraderie and brotherhood, and it is extremely common for private residence to also have a shrine dedicated to Guan Yu for protection. Calling him the God of War is quite inaccurate.

God of War?? a silly foreign label. He was an extremely honorable general who puts country and friends first. Born in a turbulent era, he fought to protect his state. He is worshipped for Loyalty, Honour, Brotherhood, and Bravery. All qualities respected by businessmen, police, firemen, soldiers, gangs, etc. Totally dif from the God of Wars in Western mythology who thirsts for blood and conquest.

Isn't it odd, and wouldn't it be interesting to know, from what source Bored Panda drew Guan Yu as THE GOD OF WAR when, apparently, the Chinese themselves see him as a much more benign figure? What happened here?

Isn't it odd, and wouldn't it be interesting to know, how this media outlet came to present Guan Yu as THE god of war when the chinese mythology sees him quite differently?

Hey folks, this is not the god of war. There is no official god of war in China as the Chinese valued winning without battle the most (δΈζˆ˜θ€Œε±ˆδΊΊδΉ‹ε…΅), which was the most emphasized phrase in Art of War. Nevertheless, calling him the god of war does help people from other culture to size his influence. If anyone is really interested, check out the wiki and his stories in the Three Kingdoms; otherwise just take home that he is best known for his wisdom and loyalty.

I know it, right China, just take a look at your God, a great viking looking God, a God of Brotherhood, loyalty, protection, and honor, which means they are not trying to rule like Nostradamus has said but to abide by the international tribunal decision to redraft the China sea borders, that are presently totally not to me taken seriously, because any common scense will telll by looking at where the spatial islands are located, that now post world war 2, they defintly have to be redrafted, and they know that, but even though China has a mighty Militay force doent mean they can take what they want by force, and they know that, they are awake now, they got their hand up, through coorprative trade, now it's time to be real, and cooprerate, Right China? you have some Yuang

how would this big, motionless, lifeless, so-called god be the god of warfare if it can't even move it's a*s an inch and be able to kill at least an ant? ...well, I only found out, it's MADE IN CHINA..

First thing first - it's not motionless, it's actually pretty dynamic (not litterally, of course, but what would you expect? A giant robot? Well, yeah, I'd love an actual Mazinger too). Second - cannot crush an ant? If an accident happens and this falls down, lives will be lost. But really, it doesn't need to fall down, all it takes is your lack of attention of where you're walking. ^_-
