All kids dream about what they will be as grown-ups. While some have unrealistic plans like becoming a princess, some actually dedicate their lives to pursuing their childhood dreams and becoming scientists, astronauts, teachers—you name it. Sadly, that’s not the case for everyone.

The late George Floyd’s second-grade teacher Waynel Sexton recently shared an essay written by him, revealing he aspired to become a Supreme Court justice. “I taught George Perry Floyd in second grade. He was a quiet student and a good boy. He wrote of becoming a Supreme Court judge. How could his dream have turned into the nightmare of being murdered by a police officer? It just breaks my heart,” she wrote in a Facebook post and posted a photo of the essay.

George Floyd’s 2nd-grade teacher Waynel Sexton recently shared an essay he wrote 38 years ago called “Future Famous American”

Waynel Sexton, George Floyd’s second grade teacher, recently shared his essay he wrote 38 years ago when he was in 2nd grade. In the essay, George Floyd, who was then called Perry by his parents, teachers, and friends, revealed he wanted to bring justice to the world and aspired to become a Supreme Court judge. “Well, one of my favorite memories of Perry involves his report for Black History Month. Each day in the month of February, we studied a different famous Black American, and as a culmination to that study, I posed the question to my students: How will you impact the future? What will you do to make a difference? So in response, each student wrote a story or an essay called ‘Future Famous Americans’ and described their aspirations,” Mrs. Sexton said.

In the essay, he revealed an ambition to become a Supreme Court justice when he grew up

“When I grow up, I want to be a Supreme Court judge. When people say, ‘Your Honor, he did rob the bank,’ I will say, ‘Be seated.’ And if he doesn’t, I will tell the guard to take him out. Then I will beat my hammer on the desk. Then [everybody] will be quiet,” wrote Floyd in his essay shared by Ms. Sexton, who currently works as Assistant Professor at University of Texas Health Science Center. Mrs. Sexton explained she kept this essay along with many other students’ work. “Each year, my class would do 2 or 3 big, major projects and I always kept one of those projects. And often it was this Black history project because I always asked the boys and girls what they wanted to be when they grew up. This was often the project I kept. So I don’t only have Perry’s work. I taught at Douglass for 24 years, and so I have hundreds of papers.”

Even though his wish to become a judge never came true, many say he will go down in history “as a man who changed America”

Mrs. Sexton shared she felt deep sadness after finding out that the man killed by the police was none other but her shy and quiet student from 38 years ago. “[I felt] a really deep down sadness. I think so many of us have had that response. Just devastation and sadness. Just a really deep down sadness,” she said. “And my heart breaks for his family. And, you know, how could we have known that the little boy, the little 8-year-old who drew this precious, delightful picture about justice and wanting to be a justice, 38 years later would be—his life would be taken? Sadly, I’m sure this isn’t the way that he envisioned being famous or bringing justice. [He was a hopeful kid]. He was quiet, he didn’t talk a lot. He was already that long, lanky little boy. We did a lot of singing and dancing in our classroom, and he enjoyed all of that. He enjoyed his friends. And he was a good boy. He was a delight to have in the classroom,” Mrs. Sexton fondly recalled. While Floyd’s life certainly didn’t unfold as he envisioned, it’s safe to say he will go down in history “as a man who changed America,” as a lot of people on the Internet say.

Why are so much people acting like trash in these comments?! Just because you don't agree doesn't mean you can act like trash to the people who do. George Floyd was murdered, yes he was not a perfect person, but that doesn't mean he should be murdered by someone who is supposed to protect people. I hope you can agree with me on that. RIP George Floyd, May he forever be in our hearts

ok, this is just my opinion. George Floyd isn't a good person. He committed crimes, robbed a woman, and something else. BUT he did not deserve to die. He already went to jail once, and for the other crime he could've just have been fined or a 1-week prison sentence, I don't know, I'm not an expert. He's not a bad person, but he's not a martyr either. He isn't this amazing brilliant man you should look up to. But he didn't deserve to die either.

In actuality he was in jail at least 5 times, performed armed robbery on a pregnant woman while holding a gun to her belly, was a porn star, drug addict, dealer & more. His rap sheet reads like that of a hardened criminal. Yes, what the police did was wrong - however portraying him as a family man is inaccurate. https://greatgameindia.com/george-floyd-criminal/

Regardless of someone's past, Americans do not deserve to live in fear of the police, which is a reality black Americans face each and every day of their lives. One aspect of the story I've seen disappear from the media coverage is that the cop who murdered George Floyd was a former coworker of Floyd's, and a known racist. He was enacting a personal grudge while imbued with the power of the police force. If that doesn't frighten you, or make your heart bleed for the terror black Americans experience regularly, you should reassess your priorities and work on developing empathy.

I also want to add something that should be patently obvious- our society criminalizes black people, particularly black men. Once someone has a criminal record in America, it impacts their life heavily. They can't get a number of jobs, they can't vote, it's harder to find housing. It's a systemic problem that becomes a self-fulfilling cycle. Inner city schools are underfunded, and black kids are targeted with unfair attention from the police from a young age. These marginalizations compound in someone's life. I'm so sick of the narrative that George Floyd was a bad person. This post shows him for who he was: a person. Who as a child had hopes and dreams, just like you and your children, if you have them, 4ever Panda.

I can't believe these f*****g morons on these comments. Lauren, nice attempt at trying to hold their hand, but that doesn't work on internet threads. George Floyd was not the best straw to break this camel's back. But none of these black men and woman dying deserved it. None. If their daughters' were killed by police because her boyfriend sold drugs and police came in on a no knock warrant and shot and killed her, they are they type to be angry and blame the boyfriend for selling drugs in the first place.

What I have learned from this post is that there are a lot of Pandas who have bought into white rhetoric and ignorance, and think that blaming the victim is the right way to go. I am beyond disgusted. The criminal with the record you should be focusing on is Officer Chauvin with dozens of citations for excessive force on his record, who never got punished for it, and who murdered a man before our eyes with complete indifference. If you want to focus on the murder victim and a past for which he actually already paid the price through our justice system, then you are, knowingly or unknowingly, an out and out racist. And if you don't like how that sounds, then maybe check your privilege and get educated on BLM.

These negative posts about George Floyd are indicative of what is wrong with our country and our society. We should be saddened by someone being murdered by the police and not bring his past into it. He got his life together and was doing positive things for his community and was murdered by the police for supposed counterfeit $20 bill? B******t, it's because these stupid cops wanted to show how tough they want to be. Like having three of them hold him down shows that. Real tough guys. The cop who murdered him with people standing there videotaping and he didn't care is the one you should be demonizing. Truly heartless, as are all of you making the negative comments about George Floyd. Learn to be compassionate. Learn to put yourself in someone else's shoes and understand how difficult it is for their his family to deal with this. Your comments make it worse for the grieving family. Have some compassion or this society will continue going down the tubes. Hate and divisiveness will
