Snapchat was created seven years ago by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown, who were students at Stanford University. The project was born while they were working on their final project. The app proved to be wildly successful, but according to Spiegel they first failed on almost 34 projects before arriving on Snapchat.

Snapchat has become a household name but originally it was coined under the name Picaboo as an iOS-only app. In 2012 Picaboo was re-branded and the name changed to Snapchat before the app was launched and made available for Android users as well.

Snapchat is used by over 100 million everyday, that's more than 100 Million people opening the app and sending photos with cat filters daily. And how many snaps are these users taking? Over 1 billion snaps everyday.

Snapchat “stories” were developed mainly in 2013. The feature gained so much popularity that now more than 400 million Snapchat stories are posted per day! The development of stories turned into a tool utilized by brands from T.V shows, to cosmetics, to sports teams to auto companies. Hollyoaks became the first soap opera to use Stories to post teasers and exclusive content every weekday at 4 P.M

So who is using Snapchat? 60% of Snapchat users are under 25, while in the UK it’s even higher with 77% under 25, 78% of all American 18-24 year olds use the platform and as of February 2018, it’s the 6th most popular social app in the US. 47% of US teens think Snapchat is better than Facebook, while 24% think it’s better than Instagram.

Snapchat is great for when you are bored which is why people spend an average of 34.5 minutes per day on Snapchat and send about 34.1 messages. Over 2 million snaps are sent every minute, with users mostly using the app to send messages to one another. As of May 15th 2018, the longest Snapchat streak is 1,120 snaps. As of 2019, the longest Snapchat streak recorded is 1401+ days.
