Isolated, in the middle of Sweden, photographer Geert Weggen, built a house and a studio that extends seamlessly into an expansive forest. Little did he know that in 2014 his home would introduce him to a muse that would lead him to a career as a photographer beyond his wildest dreams: squirrels.
With a vivid imagination, developed over thirty years as a practicing artist in a variety of mediums, Geert is endlessly fascinated by the daily surprises of his squirrel friends. Capturing the ins and outs of squirrel life in his outdoor studio, for the rest of the world to enjoy, has paid off for Geert. Not only does his work sell online like peanuts at a ball game, it’s gotten the attention of editors at National Geographic magazine. His quirky portraits include props from the natural landscape, red and white polka dot mushrooms, twigs, and yellow buttercup flowers, as well as man-made miniatures. Who knows how he gets his squirrel models to pose with pint-size guitars, umbrellas as big as a human hand, or tiny red phone booths one might see on the street corners of London?!
Cute beyond belief, these images might tempt viewers to try some squirrel staging in their own local park. But take note, Geert seems to have a special calling to commune with these furry creatures; they trust him. Practically addicted to creatively collaborating with his friends from the animal kingdom, Gert is constantly imagining and challenging himself to create new and impossible squirrel scenarios for his two million monthly viewers online. Geert’s work has been covered in a variety of magazines and newspapers; TV in Japan, Sweden and France; and, on numerous postcards and calendars for fans worldwide. Check out the images below to view some of his best work!
