I ordered a book from Amazon (remember when?) and it was shipped from a town about 1 hour south of me. My intention was to send it to my friend in the Detroit area upon receipt. When the shipping updates began arriving, it went to Detroit, Grand Rapids, then finally to me so I could repackage and send it to Detroit...again. It took 4 days to arrive from this little town I could have driven to in an hour, lol.

I've had one similar to this, but with Australia Post and Aussie town names. It literally tracked past my house to a town further north, then back past my house heading south to the main distro centre, and finally back again a few days later. My guess (for mine anyway) is that it got to the northern distro centre and someone scanned the sender address instead of recipient address so they sent it back to where it came from. Someone at the next distro centre caught the mistake and sent it back.

And it arrived in Boise on the night of the 16th before arriving in Boise the next morning. Makes total sense.

In your instance, I would deliver your mail because it was not your fault the car broke down. But not every one would.

USPS worker here. We are not supposed to dismount unless we have a package to deliver. We get paid for every step we take, that is why we scan packages at the door instead of in our truck. Please do not block your mailbox. We even have little post its that say do not block your mailbox that we can put on mail that we take back. There is one road on my route that has about 5o boxes. On any given day, 10 are blocked. I do not get paid to jump out and walk around cars and deliver mail. We are on a very strict time schedule. Now if there is a car that I can tell belongs to another house like a party is happy, I will deliver to the affected houses, except the ones having the party. I do make other exceptions sometimes. I am not trying to be rude, just explaining how the job works.
