In 2006, Tom Hanks sported a long mane, baby blue polo, and khakis for the cover of Esquire magazine. He held a beer with one hand and was grabbing a cheeseburger from the grill with the other, all while winking at us. Thanks to his likable character, reassuring attitude, and smashing sense of humor, Hanks was named "America’s Dad," embodying all the best the title has to offer.
Nowhere is it more obvious than on Hanks’ Twitter, followed by a whopping 16.6 million. His spot-on description reads: “I'm that actor in some of the movies you liked and some you didn't. Sometimes I'm in pretty good shape, other times I'm not. Hey, you gotta live, you know?” And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Hanks' down-to-earthness also explains why he was named America's Dad. According to Esquire, which first presented Hanks in a dad persona for their 2016 cover, “Hanks' star persona has always depended on his ability to embody the white Americana spirit the Esquire spread referenced; it only makes sense that he'd come to also embrace the image of the All-American Dad on-screen.”
In fact, “It strikes one as the only logical next step for the actor in his third decade as a Hollywood leading man.” Moreover, Esquire emphasizes that “Hanks' recent roles have made the righteous and saintly father the latest iteration of the Everyman mode that made him a star.” This was especially apparent in his portrayal of Walt Disney in the 2013 film Saving Mr. Banks.
