Exactly. My daughter worked for a company that was awful to their workers. They'd fire people the moment it was good for them. If a worker said they were quitting, they'd escort them out of the building immediately. My daughter was punished for staying home with a bad case of Covid... They took away her job and gave it to someone else, they took her chair and desk and made her beg for a chair and desk every day. They began closing the bathroom for cleaning on her breaks. One day she had to sit on a trash can to work. She told them she quit after her last shift was over and left. They sent her an angry letter about how she's didn't notify them that she quit then sent out a company wide email telling people how they were supposed to be loyal to the company and not leave for more money (daughter worked half the hours for almost twice the money now) etc. They were mad that she left and mad that they didn't get to escort her out the door.

I mean, there could be, but U.S. law says you MUST be paid for any work performed. If a boss did try to withhold a final paycheck, they could be sued, and rightly so. Some bosses still might threaten to, which is why it's important for employees to know their rights.

Right. I took this as a given. Employees don't have to grovel, ESPECIALLY if it's the kinda job that blows your phone up 10 times on a Saturday night that you had off saying WE NEED YOU TO COME IN OR YOU'RE FIRED. Those jobs, most definitely deserve this text. Also consider that in the US, employers can fire at will. Also consider the pandemic, when people lost their jobs without a second thought by the employer....nah. Some employers deserve these texts

not necessarily true. the place where you're applying doesn't know who your manager was, especially if you're leaving a large company. you could literally put down damn near anybody and they wouldn't know the difference. that's if they even bother to call ANY of your references, which i learned in 47 years of working in corporate america, they rarely do.

Nope. Usually they need a reason, but really anything can be a reason for most jobs. I could go into work tomorrow and be told at any time that day that I was no longer employees and the date to pick up my last check

Tennessee is a right to hire, right to fire state... They don't need any reason at all to fire you.

same here in georgia and, i think, all the southern states. they are called "at will" states, meaning they can fire you at will. they just make up a reason if they don't have a legit one, and the employee has no real recourse.

It depends on the state, but if it is a security issue, either systems or coworkers, you are met at the door by security. Even when you give notice, if they think you are a security risk, they'll tell you just to spend your notice at home.

Jacin is right. Here in the US, most employment is what is called 'at will'. And I'd like to add, people are, unfortunately, often fired for illegal reasons, too. Just not officially. Employers can make up anything they want, and, as long as the reason they give is legal, and it can't be proven otherwise, the fired employee is powerless against it. Workers' rights here are, unfortunately, very poorly protected. Our laws favor the rich corporations. Not the people who slave away for those corporations, being treated like sh!t, while growing poorer every day. It's fvcking sad.

The OP already had another job, when they quit the first one. Besides, there's almost always at least one manger that you get along with, that understands why you did what you did, and will give you a good reference anyway. So you just put their name on your next application, and no one else's. Not that ANY manager is supposed to give a bad reference. They're not even really supposed to give a good one. They're really only supposed to confirm that you worked for them, from this date to that. That's all. But, we all know how that goes...

Also, the gut feeling I get from OP's post, is that they were quitting a job in a crappy industry like fast food or retail. (No disrespect meant. I work in fast food myself-&, while it's an honest job, & I'm not ashamed of it, it IS a crappy industry. That's just a sad fact.) When hiring for those kinds of jobs, employers usually don't call applicants' previous jobs. Most often, they don't care to spend that much time & effort. All they really care about is a good work history. If they see 3 or 4 jobs, where you stayed a decent amount of time, they'll interview you, & if they like you, hire you. If they see 7 jobs where you only stayed a few days or a few weeks at each, they'll put your application with the rejects, & forget about you. But either way, they most likely won't call your former jobs. Especially as desperate as they are for help right now. So unless you're applying for an important industry, or a high-ranked position, references are not as important as we're led to believe.

False equivalence. IMHO, professionalism is based on mutual respect. Boss doesn't respect me? Then they're going to get a taste of that on my way out. I no longer have to adhere to a vocational social contract that they broke first. Most likely, being a good worker didn't get the employee anywhere. But yeah, keep believing you need to kiss the butt of a manager who treated you like dirt. I'm sure they will certainly notice you were respectful and accommodating and suddenly become a magnificent supervisor overnight. Riiiiight.
