People say laughter is the best medicine for a few good reasons. It is known to provide potential therapeutic relief for physiological ailments, alleviate stress, and lower anxiety levels

It is the ultimate feel-good drug that requires no prescription. All you need is an online resource like the Funny Instagram account to help you snap out of a funk and feel better.

The profile description says it all: “Laughter is our language,” expressed through memes and social media ramblings about daily life. You may encounter posts poking fun at romantic relationships, dishwashing methods, and parenting problems.

We’ve compiled some posts to create this list for you to enjoy, whether you’re killing time at the DMV or taking a short break at work. And if you’re feeling down, hopefully, this can be a good pick-me-up.

Exactly - the ring is just to let you know somebody would like to talk to you. There is nothing that compels you to answer if you don't want to.

My friends are very active and reach out several times a day. Which is fantastic and I love being loved by them. But sometimes my little introvert self is exhausted. I'll just text them a picture of a rock. The implication being that I'm okay but currently hiding under my rock and will emerge soon.

Do the friends know that implication though? Good friends who know how introversion works will understand

When I started teaching (at a community college) all of us new faculty were "encouraged" to get a phone number strictly for school/student use. Students "expect" us to be available 24/7, after all. I just thought "they'll have to learn to live with disappointment, then".

If you have a work-only phone, that is so that you can turn it OFF outside of working hours and not be disturbed when you are not working.

I'm gen-x and grew up unreachable. I don't like anyone thinking I jump if I hear a phone beep. I may or may not return a text within 72 hours. And I spent my career in IT.

Yep and it should apply to anythig job-related as well. No sending or responding to work messages outside of working hours unless you get compensated for.

I wouldn’t even have a phone if work didn’t pay for it. I don’t have any social media presence except a few how to videos on YouTube about RV living full time. Don’t miss the chaos that comes with it.

My wife will answer the phone every time. She can't understand how I will look to see who's calling then just walk off to do something else if that's what I choose to do.

I keep my cell phone turned off unless I am picking someone up at the airport. Don't need to be found everywhere I go.

Well, it's just rude to respond days later. Especially when you are reasonably close and it's clear that you are spending loads of time on social media. I know you've read my message and are just ignoring it. I'm not stupid. I also don't get why. Imagine the backlog of messages you'll eventually need to respond to! Why delay if you’re going to answer eventually anyway? Especially if it's something important. You don't have to answer straight away, but within 24 hours is considered non-arsehole-ish.

I didn't answer my phone for over 6 months as so much was spam. They can text or email me but that doesn't guarantee I'll get back to them.

If I don't reply straight away, I'm fine and probably very busy atm so I'll reply within a day or so. Now I usually text beforehand to ask the other person if a call is okay? If not? That's fine, it can wait. But bombarding my phone with calls and texts when I've said that I'm taking a few days off because I need rest? Or I need my phone clear from calls for a few days because I'm waiting for my specialists or doctors to call? If I don't reply? I don't reply. End of.

Partially agree. Yes, my phone is there for my convenience. But to not reply until "days later" is kind of rude outside of special circumstances. Long before cell phones and instant messaging, when we received a message we'd reply on our time but we didn't typically wait "days".

Ruth F

Not rude. When I phone someone, I take the chance that they won't be available, possibly for days. I may have no idea why they don't answer. They may be processing sudden bereavement, or have a complex emergency that takes all their attention, or be sick, or out of touch with the internet/phone system, taking a device holiday, sampling offgrid life, anything. It's their business. Same with email. I don't have a RIGHT to a response just because I dialled their number or hit send with their email address on it.

Hehe.. they get the perfect instant gratification and contact toy and then they don't reply until it is convenient. On the other hand, people seem to be perfectly fine with answering phone calls when they are sitting in a restaurant with friends, and blab on for 20 minutes, never mind it is not convenient to THEM. I agree that you should not be required to answer when it is not convenient but that also goes to extending the convenience to include your company. I remember when we had a landline, if we had guests we would tell the caller we would call back.

Absolutely. I used to have a super toxic co-worker who would call multiple times and leave dozens of rude messages accusing me of ignoring her and "not treating [her] needs like a priority" WHILE I WAS SLEEPING! Kept telling me how selfish and narcissistic I am for wanting to relax on my day off instead of get up early to help her with her chores.

my dad hates electronics and still doesn't have a disconnect; he often only goes to the post office when the postmistress is away for lunch, so he doesn't have to talk to her. i keep telling him i rarely converse with her when i go in, and it's very simple to just drop a "hi julie!" or a "have a good day" and keep on moving. you don't have to talk to people of you don't want to!

I'll be the devil's advocate. I'm a parent (and grandparent), and my Millennial kids and step kids frequently do not respond to messages. And I don't blow up their phones...just maybe once or twice a week, or less. But god forbid I fail to respond if they send something. Not saying it's this way with everyone, but I can't be the only one. It's okay to have "boundaries" (god this is such an overused term) but it's also okay to have a modicum of common courtesy. No, I don't expect a response every time I send something. But an occasional acknowledgement from time to time, even a simple thumbs up, wouldn't hurt. It's not an "electronic leash" to get a simple response every now and then.

Adding a desired ETA to messages? So if I need to let you know I'm arriving I can put "now", but if I need to know if you are present for the Assumption then I can put "seven days" and you are reminded of the message leisurely

Ppl who "don't feel obligated to answer" are not ppl you should be getting in touch with often. No urgency, no care, you're not priority for them. So treat them like they treat you and demote or delete the relationship

But you don't love me then!! I need that constant reassurance as it is what I have been given by gentle parenting and teaching. I don't have to grow up from my childish personalities because you told me I don't have to and I am jealous that kids get it and I don't.

Laughter’s plausible benefits are backed up by research. A report published by the American Physiological Society revealed that “mirthful laughter” may increase endorphins by 27% and human growth hormones by 87%. It was also found to be a “preventive adjunct therapy” for diabetes care.

In simpler terms, here’s an explanation from Harvard Medical School faculty member Natalie Datillo: the brain’s reward system goes offline when not activated regularly. She describes laughter as the “most cost-effective way” to get it back up and running.

Studies also show that these perceived benefits are magnified when another individual is involved. According to researchers, the arousal likely comes from validating emotions brought on by shared laughs.

Many people recognize the power of laughter—so much so that a variation of yoga is centered around it.

Laughter yoga practices the same breathing exercises to keep the body present and calm. As the name suggests, it involves giggles and silly movements between breaths.

A study published in the Journal of Epidemiology provides verifiable evidence on laughter yoga. The findings revealed that people who practiced it for 12 consecutive weeks showed a lowered risk for metabolic syndrome.

Throughout the experiment, participants also showed reduced excess body weight, stress, and body mass index.

Tragedy and comedy have long been linked together. Studies have shown that humor can be an effective tool in dealing with and even deflecting trauma.

The researchers who wrote this 2015 journal article found that healthy humor styles may help shift perspectives from a traumatic event. Serious matters can become more lighthearted without minimizing the gravity of the situation. Instead, it helps regulate stress.

I swear there is a team of slow and omnipresent drivers out there that tag team stalking me. Most of them drive Subarus. But all of them have armor piercing headlights. I curse them with all of my hatred for having the audacity to also be traveling by car in my general vicinity.

It's on my to-do list. Actually, it's on several of my to-do lists, but most are buried under papers on my desk. Or in the stack of papers on the table. Or maybe on the chair next to my desk. I'll add "look for other to-do lists" to this to-do list.
