Meanwhile, PDSA Vet Nurse Nina Downing explained to Bored Panda that as owners, we have a responsibility to make sure that our cats are able to express natural behaviors. They’re one of the five animal welfare needs (the other four being: health, companionship, having a suitable diet, and living in a suitable environment).

“Cats love to play, but they need to be able to play the games that are natural to them, like jumping, pouncing, and chasing, all of which mimic behavior that they display when playing outside,” PDSA Vet Nurse Nina went into detail.
“If your cat is a house cat, then you need to provide toys, climbing areas, hidey-holes, and scratch pads,” the vet nurse said that we have to provide cats with enough ‘infrastructure’ to keep them engaged, stimulated, and moving. After all, imagine how bored and lazy a cat would get inside an empty apartment with nothing and no one to keep it company.

One of the major health challenges that cats face is becoming overweight. Carrying around excess weight reduces a cat’s energy levels, life expectancy, and quality of life. Furthermore, cat obesity can lead to serious issues such as diabetes, liver disease, arthritis, breathing and bladder problems, and even cancer.

That Can't Be Right
Considering the importance that your cat stays lean and energetic, vet nurse Nina highlighted that we’re responsible for being “proactive and enticing” to get our pets interested in play and exercise if we’re serious about helping them lose weight. “It’s worth it though,” she said.

“As pets lose weight and they get more energy, owners are often astounded by their cats’ behavior changes, reporting that they are becoming more active and interested in life: ’He’s like a kitten again,” Nina gave us an example of how some cat owners react to the positive changes.

“Their slowing down wasn’t because they were getting older at all, simply that they were unhealthy, felt rubbish, and probably couldn’t be bothered,” the vet nurse said that a good diet and plenty of exercise will help cats feel young and fit. This way, the only thing you’ll have to worry about is getting a good camera angle as you’re photographing your cat meowlfunctioning.
