A good neighbor encompasses many qualities, but one of the most delightful ones is their ability to infuse everyday life with smiles and laughter.

So in an attempt to thank them for all the joy they bring to our communities, we at Bored Panda put together a set of pictures featuring people who could be nominated for the "Neighbor of the Year" award and their funny antics.

From putting up creative signs to sending unexpected gifts, these folks know how to create a warm sense of belonging, and if you do too, just try and be someone you'd want to live next to yourself!

If these pictures, for some reason, still don't inspire you to foster relationships with your members, consider the following: according to psychologist Rick Hanson, Ph.D., who is a Senior Fellow at UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center, when you are friendly to others, you get rewarded yourself.

"Being friendly feels confident and happy, with a positive take on other people, moving toward the world instead of backing away from it. And it encourages others to be less guarded or reactive with you, since you’re answering the ancient question from millions of years of evolution—friend or foe?—with an open hand and heart," Hanson explained.

To warm up your brain’s circuits of friendliness, the psychologist suggests trying one or more of these:

  • Recall being with someone who cares about you;
  • Remember when someone was friendly to you;
  • Bring to mind a time when you were friendly to someone;
  • Get a sense of the posture, movements, gestures, and facial expressions of a person you know who is naturally friendly;
  • Relax your body into a feeling of friendliness: leaning forward a little, rather than back; softening and opening your chest, face, and eyes; breathing goodwill in and out.

You don't need to worry about something grandiose. Often you can just give a smile, handshake, or nod, and that’s plenty.

"Stretch yourself, but stay within the range of whatever is authentic," Hanson said. "Remember that friendliness is not agreement or approval; it does not mean you have given up on whatever your stances may be in the relationship. Friendliness does not equal friendship; in truth, most relationships are with friendly acquaintances."

The wood is rotten if the woodpecker is doing this. It is full with maggots and other insects

A woodpecker hammering repeatedly on my shutters was how I found out we had carpenter bees before they made it into the wood structure of the house. They should have their house checked for termites or carpenter bees.

All they are doing is providing good perches. To get rid of the woodpecker, get rid of the termites.

I used to live in a place where the local flicker was in love with the [metal] furnace exhaust. Would land a few times every year and bash the heck out of it, echoing throughout the house like a bombardment.

I have older windows and, on occasions, I have woken up to them hammering away on the metal frames. The gutter too. Turns out I had an ant infestation. The metal was just in their way, lol. So, I would get pest control out there. They are doing it for a reason. There were always a lot of Anoles (little lizards, I live in Fl) in that area. One was pretty fat too.

My house had vinyl siding, placating me into believing I was safe. Oh, not so fast. The blue jays would start tapping out their signals at dawn, right outside my bedroom window. It was loud. And wood bees nested in the wood fascia boards. Little things you learn when you buy a house.

I had this problem with flickers. I was out of town caring for my dying mother and my next door neighbor was a sheet metal worker. Since I was gone for 2 months, he was nice enough to cover all the holes with squares of sheet metal. Eventually I bought vinyl siding. But yeah, they're persistent noisy little buggers. But so pretty!
