People Are Posting Hilarious Photos Of Their Great Danes, And It’s Crazy How Large They Are
To call a 175-pound dog a 'lapdog' may seem counterintuitive, that is until you meet a Great Dane. Standing at least 30 inches from paw to shoulder, these cute dogs are often referred to as "the world's largest lapdogs," as they often don't realize their own enormity. Yes, this breed is so large that a since-deceased Great Dane by the name of Zeus holds the world record for the tallest dog, standing at 44 inches from paw to shoulder.
Great Dane dog breed shares a fascinating history. First boarhounds of this size were documented in ancient Greece frescoes dating back to 13th -14th centuries BC and were subsequently very popular hunting dogs throughout Europe. Centuries later, these dogs were imported to England, where the first real Great Danes, then called simply English Dogs, started to emerge, but really took the name only in the 19th century, when the breed found its way back to Germany. And though this big dog breed was mostly used for hunting and protection, now it is widely known as the most affectionate, sweet and
According to the American Kennel Club, these big dogs currently rank as the 24th most popular dog breed, and once you see these funny photos, it's easy to understand why people love them. Blind Great Dane Lily Has Her Own Seeing-Eye Dog Maddison Who Takes Her For Walks
If you read about this. the blind dane was returned to rescue because she began attacking the other dane. so a sad ending to her story.
I read about this happening as well. Also read that there wasn't any real 'guiding' involved as dogs can't really tell if the other one is blind. I know that won't be very popular, sorry, but having had a blind dog as well and seen her with three other dogs none of them could work out why she kept walking into them. The other dog can be trained to take the lead but it's not likely to be instinctive.
Load More Replies...I have a blind/deaf dane, he's almost 7. The other dogs know he is "off" a bit but as a rule, don't get grumpy with him any longer for getting stepped on or run into but he's grown up with them. Bub-2-craz...82b08e.jpg
This is touching, and I thought that I was a bit jaded. Kudos Maddison for being such a great mate for Lily!
This is hands down the best thing I've ever seen on here. Now, if anyone needs me, I'll be under the bed. Crying.
great dane attacks when they happen are almost impossble to break up. my aunt got attacked by a dog while pregnant and her great dane protected her but almost killed the other dog. they are big sweet chickens untill you hurt their pack. the attacker dog's owner had to get sixty stiches trying to pull them apart. it was NOT the danes fault. he was protecting his mom and his unborn brother.
I had a deaf and blind great dane and if he began to wander off out of my yard his sister would tug at his collar to lead him back to the house. Just like any dog blind or not if they are unexpectedly startled they will snap back. handicapped dogs require special attention.
so sorry to hear that. like human's with something they have no control over fight's back the only way they can.
This reason is why I don't like the "feel good" stories on Bored Panda, someone puts up something cutesy but it's not always the full story.
BEAUTYFUL THIS IS WHAT LIFE SHOULD BE LIKE!!! A DOGS LOVE IS FOREVER!!!
A great pair of great danes. It's amazing how animals can sense another animal's needs and fulfill them.
My dog was the same. He was a Miniature Pinscher. I had two. One was blind, one wasn't. Once the one that wasn't blind died, the blind one couldn't get anywhere; and had to be put to sleep.
Can people not just have one story that does not have some a*s adding a s**t ending. Some like Ann that have NOTHING nice to say, just don't say anything .

Can I just say a big thankyou to the owners who have chosen not to dock the ears and tails of their Danes? Stand tall and proud.
Think docking ears/tails is dying out. The vets in my country refuse to do it.
Load More Replies...I grew up with these things, they sure are huge.. and they drool. A LOT. And about 90% of all people made a "is it a dog or a horse"-joke.
Some Great Danes are so big, you could just about ride them!
Load More Replies...Dian Ella Lillie. So to say , you are wrong. Some , well Most of these GD ears have been cropped.😡 It should be illigal everywhere. There is no need for them to be hacked about like this .
Thankfully illegal in the UK. I agree that it should be illegal everywhere.

Load More Replies...These dogs are awsome, but it breaks my heart to see all the clipped ears. I know most of you didn't get that done, but the moment you buy a dog with clipped ears/tail it will make the breeders continue to clip ears and tails. Unless it's a rescue, that is. These dogs are so big and beautiful, and they should be with their flopping ears as well, cause that's how they're born. Yes, scooby is a awsome great Dane, but he's been clipped and that's not a great model to base your dog on.
I used to have two cats and two rabbits. The rabbits died and Festa - the female cat - dissapered and then Cozmo - the male cat - also dissapered soon after. I was soo sad - those cats were everything to me. This was about 4 years ago. I am 12. : (
I'm seeing a lot of misconceptions about Danes. I've been rescuing Danes for 10 years and have often gotten a Dane at the age of 6 or 7. I have 4 right now, my oldest is 11.5 years old and going strong. If a Dane is bred by a reputable breeder (one who does all of the health testing of his/her breeding dogs), chances are good that your puppy will live into double digits and have a healthy life. It's the Danes that come from back yard breeders that have the health issues that cut their lives short. Danes don't need a lot of room. I live in a 3 bedroom mobile home on 20 acres. My Dane gang is active when we are outside but in the house, they pretty much sleep the day away. As for ear cropping, if it's done correctly and follow-up care is done, it is no more painful than a spay or neuter. it's an individual choice. Dane tails are not routinely docked, usually only in the case of happy tail. 41991150_2...31915d.jpg
But a spay/neuter is for a good reason. Ear docking is just for aesthetics.
Load More Replies...They're so absolutely gorgeous and awesome but that lifespan... :'( I don't think I could deal with that
I love GD's but I wouldn't ever get one. They have very short lives and my heart would be broken to quickly
I worked at a groomers for about a year. We had all sorts of dogs..small, large, shaggy, smooth, chunky, skinny. One day I walk into the shop and our smallest groomer motions for me to come look in our king size dog crate. There lay a massive white an black great dane (must've been about 180-200lbs.) The groomer says "Apparently we're doing cows now!!" The groomer is 5'3' and barely breaks 110lbs..but she bathed him. His name...Atlas.
Thank goodness there’s no docking is America wakeing up to this sencles mutilation. In the uk it’s illegal now thank goodness
This is not a good article unless you just want to look at pictures of big dogs, frankly (I do, though). Great Danes are not a good choice for most people, they will attack smaller creatures, they cost a small fortune to feed and care for and they can be tempremental.
Rescued Rio when he was 4 yrs old; 2nd Dane I've owned. Such a great dog, I had to buy him his own couch! For as huge as he was, he only weighed about 160 lbs when I got him; optimal weight, he was at 180. Truly a gentle giant. RIP, buddy RIO-201501...f63264.jpg
Beautiful Boy and the Beautiful couch. I'm so sorry for your loss but happy that you were blessed with a Great Dane
Load More Replies...I was shocked with every "Puppy" description. THey are HUGE. Wow.... I wouldn;t be able to afford a dog like that space-wise :D
i have a lab puppy. so one day i took her to the shopping center and there were these two giant great danes. my puppy usually will try to play with everyone she meets, but this was different. the moved towards them, jumped back, wimpered, and tried again. she then slowly made her way to the back and sniffed the great danes for a half millisecond before she jumped back. she was always jumping on the biggest of dogs, so this was such a suprise!
